F you’ve been wondering what the reason for the new paved pedestrian crossings in the Port Shepstone CBD is, read on. Motorists and residents have contactedtheFeversayingthattheydon’t see the benefit of this project as some of the paved pedestrian crossings are incomplete, some have ditches and others have potholes surrounding them. According to Gcina Mazibuko, CEO of the South Coast Development Agency,theentitywhichmanagedthe project, a R1.5-million budget was set aside for the paving of pedestrian crossings within the Port Shepstone CBD. “The department feels that this will attract investors which will retain existing jobs and businesses and create new work opportunities,” said Mazibuko. “These crossings also attract tourism and gives the CDB a facelift.” About R1.1 million has been spent

Murder docket opened for cop’s shooting A MURDER docket has been opened regarding the shooting of a police­ manstationedatHibberdenepolice station. Sergeant Michael Sibongiseni Khawula (41) was shot on on Satur­ day at about 7:10pm on the R102 on the Sipofu road north of Hibber­ dene. He was shot at while travelling in his vehicle.

The car left the road and came to a standstill on the verge. The red sedan had several bullet holes and the deceased sustained several gun­shot wounds to the body and head. Several cartridges, believed to be from a rifle, were found at the scene. The motive is still unknown and under investigation. — Supplied.

>>news2@feveronline.co.za A 74-YEAR-OLD man and his teenage neighbour were attacked by two knife-wielding men on Hibberdene beach recently. The incident took place at about 4pm. Brian Nolan, who often walks hisdogsonthebeachwithhiswife, said one of the dogs, which is still apup,wentuptothemen,wanting to play. The men used sticks to push the dog away and then came towards Nolan and his company. His wife who was also present, shouted at the men, telling them to leave her puppy alone. “They then came towards us with the sticks and one of the men produced a knife,” said Nolan. He then stepped forward and lifted up his hands to block the blows from the men. “I was nearly stabbed in the heart. My jacket has a rip on it,” said Nolan. During the scuffle Nolan said his cellphone fell from his pocket. “The youngster who was with uspickeditupandrantowardsthe bushes, thinking he would throw it in there.” Unfortunately, the robbers ran after the teenage boy and kicked him on the head. They fled with the cellphone. “I’ve heard of other attacks on the beach in the recent months. “People must be vigilant,” he said. Nolan added that he reported the case to the Hibberdene SAPS, but the spokesperson could not be reached for comment.
