HEN an Umtentweni man witnessed a South Africa Social Security Agency (SASSA) employee place her own fingerprints on a document with a plastic bag over her hand, the first thought that crossed his mind was that it was fraud. The man, who asked not to be named for fear of being victimised, recorded the incident at Maburg SASSA offices on 18 February. After recording the incident with his cellphone, he says he notified senior SASSA staff who he says “brushed me off.” The Fever is in possession of the video footage which can be viewed on our website www.southcoastfever.co.za. It shows a woman believed to be a SASSA employee inking and putting her own fingerprints on a stack of documents. What raises suspicion is that the woman’s hand is covered by a green plastic bag as she inks and stamps her fingerprints. “This had to be brought to someone’s attention as I’m sure this is not standard practice.Ispoke to staff at the office but they didn’t seem to care. “I then got the numbers of three managers and contacted them. They said they would get back to me but did not,” said the

could be fraudulent activities going on in their office.” The Fever contacted Frank Earl, SASSA’s Head of Operations for KwaZulu-Natal for comment and furnished him with the complainant’s details. After viewing the video clip he first commented that an investigation would be conducted. About two weeks later, Earl responded: “We have no reason to believe this is fraud.

The complainant is uncooperative with SASSA and we cannot conclude our investigation.” The Fever then questioned whether the employee’s actions in the video clip were standard practice. There has been no reply from Eearl. “Nobody from SASSA contacted me,” said the man. “They would have had my full attention if they did.”
