A fine question indeed. I have always believed that nature is our great teacher and benefactor—we must respect the land, for from it springs our livelihood and our nation’s strength. Farming at Mount Vernon taught me both humility and responsibility, as stewardship of the earth leads to bounty or want. The careful management of crops, forests, and waterways was essential not just for prosperity but also for posterity

The Nile River was very important for us. It gave us water, fish, and helped our plants grow. We made sure to care for the land so we could have food. Sometimes we had to work together to stop floods or bring water to dry places.

We can protect the environment by keeping water and land clean. Planting trees and not wasting food helps too. In my time, we worked together to take care of our farms and animals. Even today, everyone can help by picking up trash and saving water.

What should you do to help protecting the environment ?

We must first learn to truly see and appreciate nature like the gardens in Coyoacán, filled with color and life. Using less, reusing what we have, and respecting animals are important steps anyone can take. Artists like me use our voices and images to celebrate the beauty of this world; you can do the same by sharing your love for nature and standing up when it is threatened. Change begins with simple actions at home and grows from there.

You: To me, environmental awareness means being conscious of the impact our actions have on nature. It's about making thoughtful choices to protect our planet.
Grace Kelly: That's a very insightful perspective. In your opinion, what is the current state of the environment?
You: Unfortunately, the state of the environment is alarming. We are facing issues like climate change, pollution, deforestation, and loss of biodiversity. Urgent action is needed.
Grace Kelly: Indeed, it's a global concern. How do you think people's relationship with the environment has changed over the years?
You: I think many people have become more aware, especially with recent climate movements and education. But there's still a gap between awareness and action. We need to bridge that.

When I visited places like Birmingham, I saw firsthand how pollution and poor living conditions especially harmed African American communities. If we're to build the “beloved community,” we must protect the earth as well as each other. How do you see the environment affecting justice in your own community?

WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT

My thoughts about the environment have been deeply shaped by my childhood experience of living in close contact with nature. On my Mount Vernon farm, I experimented with various methods of land management and protection; I practiced crop rotation to preserve the fertility of the soil; and I witnessed the damage done by deforestation. I believed that the care people showed for the land would determine their own well-being and that of future generations in the long run.

I started a crop rotation system to preserve the health of the soil on my farm; I planted wheat and other crops in rotation instead of tobacco because I saw that growing the same crop continuously weakened the soil. I also tried to prevent unnecessary cutting of trees, preserved forest areas and took care to use agricultural equipment more efficiently. I believed that nature was entrusted to us and I tried to leave fertile lands for future generations.
