After what felt like the warmest winter in memory, it’s a relief to have a normal spring – what with the fresh, bright palettes we’re seeing in fashion and beauty, the motivation to get off the sofa and work out again, the thrill of travel and adventure in the air, it’s a great start to the year.

It’s the time when people start getting hit by wanderlust, and if you’re experiencing an unusually strong dose of it, our cover story, “Rock the Boat”, will interest you. ARTY RUNWAY 藝術秀場 Burberry presented its February 2017 collection at its second straight-to-consumer show, at Makers House in London’s Soho. Alongside the sculpted silhouettes and durable menswear and womenswear fabrics were Henry Moore’s bronze sculptures that inspired the collection.

Seventy-eight limited-edition unisex couture capes, available by special order, were introduced on the runway. MOTOR RACING HAS BEEN PART OF AUDI’S DNA FOR MANY DECADES. WHY IS IT SO IMPORTANT TO AUDI?

I think it is the basis of our company. Looking at the cars, they are sporty models. A lot of them were also developed for racing purposes.

The R8 is one such example. So it is part of the logic behind how we build cars and how we develop them. The name Audi Sport is the right match for this. The rules and history are also very important to our company and, in general, to other companies, especially when you are in a premium segment and or a high-end sports premium segment.

Therefore, the rules and history are part of our success and are also important for tomorrow, because we started in the 1930s when the legendary “Silver Arrow” models of Auto Union were the ultimate

Not every RS model is meant to go on a race track. But 50 per cent of the parts in the R8 are also in the RS GT3. The design gives it a perfect balance. The engine is a mid rear-engine. So the car is exactly how a racing car should be. It’s clear that there is an idea behind all the other cars during the drawing phase. Picking the differences is awkward as it depends on time and the type of car. But lightweight materials, positioning and the balance of the car, all these things are clearly valid for both cars.

There are so many high-performance cars in Hong Kong. It boils down to the passion of the people for these types of cars as there is not always the opportunity to display the power. But we have to create the opportunity for these people to test the cars and let them drive on the racetrack under safe conditions .

When Paris-based Vetements and MatchesFashion.com announced their much anticipated garage sale at the beginning of Seoul Fashion Week, a streetwear-savvy crowd lined up outside. But Vetements isn’t the only brand trying to get its foot in the door. Korean streetwear has created quite a buzz over the past two years.

首爾時裝周開鑼之際，巴黎品牌Vetements及MatchesFashion.com宣布萬眾期待 的特賣場所在地，吸引街頭潮流達人蜂擁而至，門外大排長龍。然而，Vetements 並非唯一想打入韓國市場的品牌。事實上，過去兩年間，韓國街頭服飾已掀不容 忽視的熱潮。 韓國文化中心經常舉辦國際貿易展覽，展示韓國設計師的作品，成功引外界 對本土時尚產業的關注。

With an explosion of colour, modern techniques, craft and use of experimental fabrics, their collections can be seen as a reconstruction of fresh millennial ideals. “Korean millennials are experiencing an entirely different world to their parents. The technological and internet progression has given young Koreans a fresh platform to communicate with the world, and therefore the post-digital Korean style can sometimes seem detached from the traditional aesthetic,” says London-based independent exhibition curator and creative lead at the Hyman Archive, Tory Turk, who specialises in style and popular culture and has curated exhibitions for the Korean Culture Centre.

Korean streetwear today is a far cry from the traditional styles of the 1900s, and is documenting a massive cultural shift. It represents breaking away from outdated notions where a lot of emphasis is placed on ideas of prosperity, luck and longevity. It’s all about free expression and individualism now.

Brands use these experimental ideas as a selling point, which generates a sense of relevance. “I think it is about youth culture’s obsession with desiring to be both unique and ubiquitous and [monograms or logos] are streetwear codes that satisfy this paradox,” Turk says.

However, a huge part of this sense of uniqueness is inspired by American and European cultures. It is common for local designers to often rely on copies of high- end international brands and discounts to sell their designs. The upside of this is its obvious global appeal but chasing individuality sometimes comes at the cost of losing authenticity. “When I design, I concentrate most on how distinctive, unusual and extraordinary the clothes are. Originality isn’t as important.

It’s street culture. The inspiration can come from anywhere,” admits Woo Jin-won, creative director at Rocket X Lunch.

When it comes to the Seoul fashion scene, streetwear is king 當談到首爾時尚時，街頭服裝是當之無愧的王 “I think that this graphic and photogenic logo/text mania is in fact an international phenomenon, or at least a Western one,” adds Sofia Hedman, curator and exhibition designer who guest-curated the Korean International Fashion Showcase, “A New Space Around the Body” for the British Council.

The borrowed cultural elements are obviously what appeal to a global audience. But what makes Korean streetwear so exceptional and remarkable?

This blend of strong individual convictions and traditional aesthetics is what resonates with an entire generation that extends beyond the borders of this tiny Asian peninsula. Hedman believes it’s what makes Korean streetwear such a large-scale phenomenon.

“We live in a global world today, where global trends sometimes appear to erase national boarders, and at the best, create solidarity.”

For their spring 2017 collection, “Exposure”, the designer used the colour khaki (commonly used as camouflage) to symbolise how the military “camouflages” its coercive culture and violent weapons of destruction as attempts to attain peace. “We used disassembled pieces of military tents painted with distinct colours and collaged them into bags. Tents without their camouflaging function symbolise peace, while irregularly cut and freely painted tent pieces suggest the intimidating tactics,” Chung says.

Beyond all the irony, exaggerated silhouettes and bold messages, however, is an understated and calm design aesthetic that brands identify with.

Concept Korea, a global project that publicises Korea’s fashion culture throughout the world and supports domestic designer brands, has been holding a special runway event for Korean designers during New York Fashion Week for the past few years.

The idea is to be unpretentious and prove style can be achieved without any unnecessary elements. Details such as little pops of colour and mismatched fabric and colour patches keep this simplicity fresh. “I believe Korean

explains Tom Debuse, director of charter management at Y.Co. “As a result there are more yachts available and a growing market.”

There are charter brokers galore in the region now, all touting superyachts to the world’s fussiest clients. So how do these experiencehungry travellers choose which one to set sail on? “If you’re working with a good broker, they’ll be able to match a yacht to your needs,” Debuse says. Those needs, though, can vary greatly – from families seeking smaller yachts with intimate lounge spaces, to gourmet travellers who might want a Michelin-starred chef on board, to party people, whose priorities might include a good speaker system and enough deck space to dance freely under the stars. One must-have, regardless of the customer, seems to be a well-stocked toy garage.

At last year’s Monaco Yacht Show, toys were everywhere. From inflatable climbing walls and electronic surfboards to ecological golf balls that dissolve into fish food and helicopters which can land guests straight on deck after a day’s sightseeing, there seems no end of innovation. The ability to ensure that time off the boat is as enjoyable as it is on board, is also paramount. Enter Based on a True Story, a company which promises to take charter to “the next level”. Founder Niel Fox explains: “Chartering a yacht for two weeks is a pricey investment, we’re an insurance policy to make sure guests experience something truly amazing.”

It’s no surprise that the founder used to work as a fixer for a wealthy superyacht owner. An adventure organised by his company can involve anything from running with dog-sleds on a frozen Arctic lake, to a family fantasy pursuing mythical creatures through Greece; or witnessing the enactment of ancient sacrifices by an Indonesian hilltop tribe. At the end of each trip, guests get a beautiful leather-bound book chronicling their experience.

It’s no surprise that charter clients who have grown tired of their regular haunts are gearing up for these thrilling experiences. Robba recalls a trip to an island east of Flores in the Mergui archipelago. “It’s so remote,” he says, “We never saw another yacht. One day, we took the RIB out to a secluded bay and there were thousands of dolphins, it was unreal. Being in these places where nature is so untouched leads to wonderful experiences.” No wonder five-star travel is taking to the water.

The modern, luxurious aesthetic is a look that Nix has honed well over the decades.

He has been an interior designer for 35 years, working initially with Atlanta-based Stan Topol. He eschews the trendier aspects of design, inclining towards interiors in classic overtones that can last for years, instead of those that a client might tire of in a year. His designs at The Park Residence in Taichung, for example, feature velvet furniture the colour of pale cognac and mahogany wood.

Nix and his team took motifs reminiscent of Macau’s colonial Portuguese legacy, such as the patterns found on tiles and leather dating back as far as the 17th and 18th centuries, and transferred them onto carpets and draperies. He infused them with bright colours, to help make them “a little livelier for a casino environment.

“The idea is to keep people awake for 24 hours,” Nix says. “We have to keep in mind that it’s a casino, and most people in there have a short attention span. Good design is about capturing your audience and keeping them at your resort because if they get bored they’ll move on to the next one.”

“Design should be a series of seamless experiences,” he says. “The way something is designed should encourage someone to linger, to explore.”

When a cape is priced at HK$5.53 million, it’s worth a second (and maybe third or fourth) look. Boucheron’s Cape de Lumière – Cape of Light – is a work of art, and worth its hefty price tag due to the fact that the piece is not stitched from fabric, but rather, is made of gold and diamonds.

Claire Choisne, the brand’s creative director, says that the cape was “one of the most challenging developments” of the 26 Vendôme collection, likening the production process to haute couture fashion. “The idea was to create a piece that would be a jewel and a garment,” she says. “It’s a whole new challenge, a way of reinventing the work of the jeweller by creating the jewellery of tomorrow.”

The claim is hardly an exaggeration. The template for the cape involves 70 hours of work, while the time for crafting the many exquisite details ultimately totals 925 hours. The piece is so named for its shimmering effect when worn, produced by the peacock feather motif, which radiates across the design, and by the many different textures of gold used throughout – matte surfaces paired with twisted chains resembling the ribbed Gros Grain pattern – not to mention all the inset diamonds.

The final product consists of 850 round diamonds totalling 5.26cts, with an 81.62ct citrine stone holding the cape together at the centre. The idea behind this piece was to create something that would function as both a jewel and a garment. The maison’s artisan-jewellers work from the initial sketch, drawn based on the idea that the cape should mimic the soft train of a peacock, enveloping the shoulders of the wearer.

The whole production process is carried out on a Stockman dummy, ensuring that the metal work will be supple enough to fit and drape perfectly on human shoulders. The craftsmen give the same attention to detail with this piece as they do with an haute couture clothing piece. The template alone requires 70 hours of work.

The elements of the cape are interconnected by a mesh woven of golden thread, in a modern interpretation of the classic peacock feather motif. The pattern is meticulously hand-threaded by the maison’s artisanjewellers.

The precise chiselling of the cape gives it a remarkable suppleness and fluidity, so that it moves and sits on the wearer’s skin like fabric.

Upon closer inspection, the delicately twisted chains are inset with diamonds, for a subtle but luxurious shimmer as the cape moves in the light.

Boucheron’s Claire Choisne draws a comparison between the creation of this cape and haute couture clothing, and it’s easy to see why with the production process. Each peacock feather feature has to be adjusted according to the curve and shape of the wearer’s body. The interconnectedness of the features means that if one element is adjusted, the elements to its left and right have to be tweaked accordingly.

The largest “feathers” go in the front of the cape, and the artisans set diamonds on the two shapes in a pattern that mimics the effect of light reflection, emphasised by the lines engraved under the central citrine stone. This final touch is what gives the jewellery piece its name – the Cape of Light.

Nakata was determined to raise awareness of Japan’s national alcohol across the world. “Sake makers are less concerned about branding and marketing. For me, it is about bringing sake outside of Japan,” he said ahead of the launch of his limited-edition sake “N” 2015. The latest edition of his sake is expected to be launched in early 2017.

Beckaly Franks, an award-winning mixologist and co-owner of hip Hong Kong bar The Pontiac, believes success can stem from many factors.

Celebrity power is the most obvious. The better known and wellrespected the celebrity, the greater the possibility of the public buying their brands. Franks says: “Their name and word is their power”.

Franks is cautiously optimistic: “I hope that within their investments, they can also get invested in protecting the agriculture. More importantly for the mixologist when deciding to offer the tequila at her bar is that “[Casamigos] is 100 per cent agave, [and] it is a thoughtful agave. It’s respected. It comes from the same producing region as tons and tons of popular tequilas.”

This seems to be the consensus in the food and beverage industry. A celebrity’s name may be a talking point, but ultimately what drives success are the inherent qualities of the alcohol. By working with or learning from industry veterans who possess the experience, skills and know-how, celebrities can tap into a market where their name can create additional interest.

Similar to Clooney and Nakata, Pitt and Jolie have partnered with industry veterans Famille Perrin to help with the viticulture, winemaking and wine distribution. Timberlake joined forces with Sauza Liquors, a brand then owned by Beam Inc, the creators of Jim Beam. Beam Inc has since been acquired by Suntory.

Boxing classes nowadays are fitness-oriented to appeal to women who want to get healthy. 近年愈來愈多拳擊班以纖體瘦身為招 徠，吸引女學員。

Mixed martial arts (MMA) is making waves in Hong Kong thanks to ViuTV’s reality show, G-1 Fight Club. Boxing has become the latest fitness trend beyond the screen, as the rise of commercial boxing clubs has attracted growing numbers of women.

It is difficult during any stroll on the streets to avoid all the advertisements for fitness clubs. The achievements of Hong Kong featherweight fighter Rex Tso Sing-yu, who has won all 20 professional bouts, has hogged the headlines for the sport, but there are more movers and shakers behind its rise.

“After the Sars [outbreak in 2003], people in Hong Kong became more concerned about their health,” Ken Chow, chief instructor at Diamond Thai Boxing & Fitness, says. “People are now more willing to spend money and time on workouts such as yoga, weight training and martial arts. The latter is more interactive and therefore, the preferred option [for most].”

Chow says boxing’s more dynamic nature, as opposed to gym exercises, means that it holds greater appeal for white-collar urbanites who want to make the most of their leisure time.

Unlike many old-style boxing clubs, the new kind of clubs are best described as boxing-themed fitness centres which appeal to women who want to get fit. “The sport of boxing has changed a lot in the past decade,” Chow says. “The old generation boxing clubs focused only on competitions, while classes nowadays are fitness-oriented.”

The new generation boxing classes turn aggressive moves into aerobic routines that strengthen different muscles while reducing the risk of injury. In the old days, boxing instructors offered monotonous and combative content. Clubs nowadays offer classes consisting of various martial arts, such as karate, judo, Brazilian jujitsu and MMA, so students can choose the most suitable kind for themselves.

The Fight Club show reflects the latest fitness trend of growing numbers of women attending commercial boxing clubs. 現今愈來愈多女士加入新式拳館，電視格斗真人秀正正反映此健身風氣。

When film director Tracy Choi sought out locations in Macau that had the right period atmosphere for the filming of Sisterhood – a movie set in the 1990s – she was struck by how much the city has changed over a few decades STORY Lee Wing-sze

From Portuguese colony to special administrative region of China; from small town to flashy entertainment hub – Macau has been through a dramatic transformation over the past couple of decades. When young director and Macau native Tracy Choi was searching for old streets in the city in which to shoot her debut feature film, Sisterhood, she faced a tremendous challenge.“We needed to look for streets that still have the vibe of the 1990s. It was so difficult as many places are gone or changed. While a few scenes were shot at historic sites such as Na Tcha Temple and Mount Fortress, a major part of the movie was filmed in the old district near Ponte 16, where old buildings and shops can still be found.

Small shops such as Si Heung – a nut and snack food shop open since 1962 – provided a reference for the look and feel of the Macanese cake shop in the movie. “I helped a friend of mine make a documentary about [Si Heung] before. We wanted it to be one of the filming locations for Sisterhood, but the owner turned us down for some reason,” Choi says.

Sisterhood, released in late February, tells the story of former masseuse Sei (Gigi Leung), who was raised in Macau but moved to Taiwan after the 1999 Macau handover. Sei returns to her hometown many years later for the funeral of her best friend, Ling (Jennifer Yu), whom she met while working in a Macau massage parlour, and suddenly finds that many memories from her past keep returning.

The scene in which the young masseuses hang out in a food stall area – dubbed Tou Fa Gong – is located on Rua Leste do Padre João Clímaco, near the Red Market. Back in the 1960s, Tou Fa Gong housed over 10 stalls selling noodles, coffee, clothes and fabrics, and was popular with young factory workers from the nearby industrial area. Since 2009, due to a land ownership dispute, some vendors have been forced to shut their business. “We rebuilt some stalls there for filming, hoping to show the audience how it used to be bustling,” Choi says.

Choi laments the fact that there are fewer shops with local character in the city today. “It’s getting harder and harder for small shops to survive today as the rents keep rising,” she says. “I hope people realise [what] changes are happening here.” 為了尋找合適的電影拍攝場景而差不多走遍澳門每一條大街小巷的徐欣羨說︰“我們 刻意選擇一些非一般旅遊觀光的場景[來拍攝]。當我與監製和攝影師商討這問題時，大 家覺得我們應向觀眾呈現一個不一樣的澳門。”

The stars of South Korean variety show Running Man paid a quick visit to Cotai Arena at The Venetian Macao on February 18, as part of their Running Man 2017 Asia tour. The Macau stop saw Song Ji-hyo, Lee Kwang-soo, Kim Jong-kook, Ji Suk-jin and Haha – five of the six members of the Running Man cast – arrive to entertain fans.

Kim Jong-kook (KJK): I think Macau is one of Asia’s most glamorous cities. We’ve been in Macau before to film [an episode of Running Man], but this is the first time we’ve been here for a concert. This city also has a lot of cultural festivals, and [I’m sure everyone] will have lots of good memories of being here. And as always, thank you [to the fans].

When it comes to the cast’s fondest memories of staying in Macau...

Jee Seok-jin (JSJ): Bungee jumping [from the top of Macau Tower] was something only Song Ji-hyo would try – the rest of us wouldn’t do it.

Song Ji-hyo (SJH): No, but since I’ve already done it once, I think my fellow band members should give it a try.

JSJ: We let Song Ji-hyo do all the scary stuff, and if – if – someone else might be willing to give it a try, it would be Kim Jong-kook – the other three of us wouldn’t [dare].

KJK: One has to face a lot of dangers in life, but must we really do that as well?

Haha (HH): Macau Tower is most beautiful when it’s viewed from the ground.

Lee Kwang-soo (LKS): We’re looking forward to [giving a good] performance and [to receiving an] enthusiastic response from the crowd. And to all the fans and members of the press who are coming to this event, and [who came] to the airport, thank you from the bottom of my heart; I hope [everyone will have] good memories.

金鐘國：我覺得澳門是極具魅力的亞洲城市。我們曾到此拍攝節目，但卻是第一次來 開演唱會。這個迷人城市有很多特色文化節日，我希望大家能留下美好回憶，並再 一次感謝粉絲來臨支持。 當談到在澳門的難忘經歷： 池錫辰：到澳門塔玩蹦極這種事，只有宋智孝能做到，其他人沒辦法。 宋智孝：並非如此，我已經跳過一次，因此我推薦隊友也嘗試一下。 池錫辰：我們總是讓宋智孝做刺激恐怖的事，但如果要推薦他人，就只剩下金鐘國了， 我們其餘三人做不到。 金鐘國：一個人一生要面對很多危險的事，為何我們非要做這事？

HH: We’ve prepared a lot. Our concert is a way for us to communicate with our fans, so we’re [looking forward] to communicating with the crowd. Our performance becomes livelier the more passionate [the crowd is].

HaHa：澳門塔還是從地上看最美。

JSJ: I believe a concert in Hong Kong is in the works right now.

LKS: It would be great if an opportunity came up for us to go to Hong Kong and meet our [fans there].

JSJ: Malaysia and Thailand are in the works, but [nothing is yet confirmed] HH: We are doing our best to go to all the places that are asking for us, and we want to meet as many [of our fans] as possible.
