Contact lenses were invented approximately 100 years ago and that time they were made from hard plastic or glass. With the advancement in technology, the contact lenses started to be made from soft plastic. Contact lenses are medical devices and are designed in a way to comfortably fit over the cornea. They are the best alternative to glasses and can correct refractive errors as well. Lenses are a completely effective and safe way to correct the vision related problems when they are used with proper wear and care instructions. Eye conditions that can be treated with contact lenses include myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism and presbyopia.

Various types of contact lenses: Soft contact lenses These days the most commonly prescribed contact lenses are the soft contact lenses. They are made from materials that retain moisture and allow oxygen to pass easily through the eyes and reach cornea. Gas permeable contact lenses These lenses are also known as the rigid gas permeable lenses. These are hard lenses made from plastics combined with other materials. The allow oxygen to pass easily, this is the reason they are termed as gas permeable. Wear and care instructions for contact lenses    
