Taylor Swift's "The Eras Tour," the highest-earning concert tour in history with over $1 billion in revenue, has caused excitement and controversy simultaneously, especially in Southeast Asia Out of 151 shows worldwide, Singapore was chosen as the only stop in the ASEAN region thanks to an exclusive agreement. This deal brought huge economic benefits to Singapore, including a surge in tourism, increased hotel and flight bookings, and a boost to the country's economy. However, the arrangement left other countries of the region out, leading to criticism from some leaders who felt it was unfair.

Countries like Thailand and the Philippines have accused Singapore of ignoring regional cooperation for its own gain The deal has also raised questions about its compliance with international trade laws, particularly the WTO Agreement on Subsidies and Countervailing Measures, which prohibits anti-competitive subsidies. Critics argue that such exclusive agreements hurt competition and neighboring economies While Singapore’s Prime Minister defends the deal as a smart business move, other countries are considering adopting similar strategies to attract global events, highlighting how much influence "Swiftonomics" can have on trade and tourism.

This article discusses the attacks on the Rafah refugee camp in Gaza by Israeli forces, highlighting significant violations of international humanitarian law and raising concerns over acts or commissions of genocide. On May 26 and 28, 2024, airstrikes killed many Palestinian refugees, including women and children, and destroyed critical infrastructure, sparking global outrage. Israel claims these actions were aimed at Hamas leaders, yet such attacks blatantly disregard civilian safety and international legal protections under treaties like the Geneva Conventions. The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has intervened, ordering Israel to cease military operations and prevent further destruction.

What's Happening In The World Today

Indonesia’s history of human rights violations commemorated as "September Hitam" or Black September highlights a series of tragic events, including the 1965-1966 anti-communist purge, the Tanjung Priok incident in 1984, the Semanggi II tragedy in 1999, and the 2004 assassination of activist Munir Said Thalib. These incidents involved mass killings, arbitrary detentions, and suppression of dissent, yet justice remains unattainable Despite Indonesia’s obligations under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) to uphold rights like life, liberty, and fair trials; systemic failures have left victims and their families without closure, while perpetrators largely evade accountability.

To move forward, Indonesia must address past atrocities through truth and reconciliation commissions, enforceable judicial processes, and educational reforms to promote human rights awareness. Ratifying the Rome Statute could strengthen legal mechanisms for justice and align the country with global standards. By ensuring accountability, reparations, and non-recurrence of such events, Indonesia can break the cycle of impunity and foster a society where human rights and the rule of law are fully respected

TRUMP'S DECISION TO LEAVE PARIS AGREEMENT

This article analyzed the implications of former President Donald Trump's withdrawal of the United States from the Paris Climate Agreement, an international accord aimed at mitigating climate change by limiting global temperature rise and reducing greenhouse gas emissions Trump justified the withdrawal on economic grounds, asserting the need to renegotiate a "fair" deal for the U S , but the decision faced widespread criticism for undermining global climate leadership and potentially jeopardizing efforts to keep warming below critical thresholds of 2°C or 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.

The Paris Agreement, adopted in 2015, requires nations to submit and update their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) every five years, outlining strategies for emission reduction and climate resilience The U S played a pivotal role under President Obama, committing to significant emission reductions and financing climate initiatives However, Trump’s withdrawal disrupted these commitments, creating legal and environmental uncertainties This decision had broad implications, including increased U.S. emissions, potential weakening of global climate cooperation, and heightened risks of surpassing climate thresholds, signaling a critical moment for international climate policy

Empowering Yourself, Empowering Others: Alumni Stories

like my second family even saya berbeda dengan temen-teman lain, ada diskriminasi. Ga cuma mi juga sering bonding kayak jalanremain as a good memory for me

man

During the academic visit, we managed to discuss legal issues that happened in Indonesia and Thailand at that time, broaden our connection, as well as gain more experience together with SCIL members.

I was once a timid person So, I found it hard to speak in public and start conversations with others. By joining SCIL, I learned how to approach people and improve my public speaking.

I was kinda amazed with the development of SCIL nowadays. Back in my time, there were 3 divisions, but now I think there are more than there used to be. Moreover, given that I am a kind of visual learner, I have to say that the design team is getting much better. I can see it from the official account of SCIL that developed beyond words.

Keep up with the good work SCIL! Buat SCILers, If you never try, you never know. Jadi buat teman-teman SCIL, just give it a shot!

Take a Leap and Be Part of Something Great

Kent Chandra, former President of SCIL in 2022. Here. I want to share one of my very memorable personal experiences

u SCIL menurut kakak?

Sebenarnya, gabung SCIL tuh nggak direncanain sama sekali.

So, take the leap and be part of something great!
