Science Unit at Lingnan

In 2023-2024, the Science Unit (SU) launched a brand-new Master of Science programme, initiated the first Hong Kong Newt Roadkill Survey dedicated to the public, and organized significant events nurtured Lingnan students. Moves with the times, the SU strives hard for illustrating an all-round green lifestyle pictures for students, campus and the society.

Master of Science in Sustainability and Environmental Analytics (MScSEA) has been newly launched by the SU in 2024-2025. The programme focuses on sustainable development and environmental data analysis, presenting the best choice for future shapers to equip with thorough understanding of up-to-date global issues and strategic sustainability management skills

The SU and Eco Travel presented “Hoi Ha Wan x Lai Chi Chong Eco Field Trip” as the first exclusive activity for MScSEA students. Exploring coral reefs and volcanic sedimentary rocks lie on the Lai Chi Chong shore and Hoi Ha Wan protected water, students are cultivated with knowledge of precious marine and geologic features of Hong Kong.

ustainable Campus Consumer Programme

The three-year project, funded by the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, aims to drive sustainability and promote the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal #12: Responsible Consumption and Production in 8 campus communities. Students would be chosen as sustainability leaders to achieve several goals in the Lingnan campus.

Clothing Swap Pop-up Market

In 2023-24, Lingnan sustainability leaders organized two significant events, Clothing Swap Pop-up Market and Lunchbox Lending Programme, to promote green lifestyle in the campus Students who dedicated to the programme would receive up to HKD 6,000 project funding per team to develop and execute the project

The JCSCCP programme has taught me valuable lessons It serves as great educational tools on current global issues and gives students like us an opportunity to organize and hold events, practice leadership, and work collectively on reducing the current harms to our planet.

Led by ecologists from Lingnan University and the University of Hong Kong, we explored the rivers of Tai O, witnessing how migratory species navigate between freshwater and saltwater habitats.

RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS HongKongNewtRoadkillSurveyorProgram2024

Organized by the SU and funded by the crowdfunding project Life (cycle) of the Hong Kong Newt, the Roadkill Surveyor Program 2024 provided interested and passionate individuals the opportunities to conduct field surveys about the roadkill situation of Hong Kong Newt.

INTRODUCTION

Every year in early spring, Hong Kong newt carcasses are found on concrete roads The situation arises because the newts are unfortunately run over by motor vehicles when they migrate from stream to forest, causing roadkill The heartbreaking discovery of over one hundred Hong Kong newt carcasses on Fei Ngo Shan Road last year has inspired the crowdfunding project to call for public attention to address the human-wildlife conflict issue

OBJECTIVES

Collect data to identify roadkill peak period and compare the roadkill pattern across hotspots

Provide wildlife survey training and hands-on opportunities for interested individuals

Promote citizen science practice via using mobile application

METHODOLOGY

Roadkill Survey:

Period : 18 March - 28 April 2024 (6 weeks)

Sites: Kowloon Peak, Mui Tsz Lam, Chuen Long, Pak Ngau Shek

Duration: 2 - 3 hours each survey

Track survey routes by TrailWatch hk

Raise public awareness on the roadkill issue of Hong Kong newts

Provide scientific data to facilitate the development of roadkill mitigation measure
