The Clothing Cycle

Serving as great application of research findings and community engagement, the ITF project has provided a smart solution for mosquito-borne related issues in Hong Kong

The ITF project Science Laboratory

SU has developed a science lab at LCH113 that supports research of academic staff, at the same time allows students to gain research experience.

The course offers Lingnan students great opportunities of working in local NGOs & organisations with allowance

To ocean lovers: make your contribution in ocean conservation!

Aside from being an event coordinator of our #OneTonneLess Shoreline Cleanup and Waste Audit Campaign, a dedicated effort endorsed by the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, there are also various STEM workshops as well as marine conservation and sustainable education waiting for your participation and inputs Ready to take on challenges of working outdoors a lot and being adaptive to dynamic situation? Don’t hesitate to join us!

To applicants: Major inconsistency was never the barrier

Not being familiar with the local ecology and species?

Not a problem! Environmental education covers a wide range of skills and knowledge If you have a strong desire to learn with a quality of being adaptable and detail-oriented , and of course, enjoy working in natural surroundings, you will have lots of fun participating, leading, and learning from various projects in our company

Clothing Swap Event

It is a cross-university sustainable event which serves the functions not only to swapping clothes, but attitudes, behaviours, and knowledge.

It is an annual event co-organised by 8 UGC universities and the JCSCCP, where clothes would be collected from each campus and being "traded" on the market after cleaning.

Lingnan has successfully held the first round of the event and is currently going on the second round

NEW round of ILP events offered by science unit in TERM 1, 2023-24!

"Soap" for Good ben don go!

In collaboration with Soap Cycling, the event was held to offer students an authentic experience of utilising excessed soap collected from hotels, recycling them via watering and food colouring to make their own unique soap

UNIQUE LIFE EXPERIENCE:

Sharing from "bug war" project student intern in Summer 2023

Being a wise consumer you would need to make responsible choice. The "ben don go!" event offers you an alternative option for takeaways Instead of consuming disposable plastic cutlery, staff and students can now choose the one-stop free reusable meal container service.

Social Media Influence

J: Pleasure to meet you professor Today's interview will focus on the main character of this special war against food waste: Black Solider Fly (BSF) larvae May I know the reason for choosing this specific species?

W: That is a great question As a matter of fact, BSF is the perfect choice for the program due to its robust performance in: food waste conversion, nutritional composition, and ecological compatibility BSF larvae can grow on different organic substrates (layers that BSF habitats) BSF has a great appetite, they consume a quantity of food twice their weight on a daily basis while having a comparably short life cycle, facilitating a quick turnover and high production rate Compared to mealworms, BSF presents a higher calcium content, enhancing its nutritional value as animal feed Importantly, BSF is generally acknowledged by scientists for being a non-invasive species* in nature unlike mealworm which is recognised as plant pest by AFCD of the HKSAR with strict regulation for import

J: I see As we notice the extreme high temperature this summer, is there any special treatment being adopted?

W: It is another characteristic of BSF that it is an eurythermic species which displays the capacity to endure a temperature spectrum ranging from 15 to 47 ℃ Nevertheless, measures like shading structures, enhancing ventilation, temperature monitor system could be adopted in prevention of extreme hot days

Feeding BSF Larvae

Based on the availability of feeding materials I typically feed the BSF larvae every three days The first step is to weigh the food waste and evenly distribute it among four containers of BSF larvae It is crucial to observe and remove excess food waste that has not been digested by the bugs to maintain the hygiene condition of the container and the digestive efficiency of the BSF larvae

Choosing BSF as the perfect weapon to beat up food waste A SCIENTIFIC DECISION: Campus Campaign: Bug Wars Against Food Waste Lingnan has launched its originate Bug Wars Against Food Waste project, aimed at providing a ecological solution to process the dining leftover and transforming the organic waste into valuable resources by feeding BFS larvae with food waste Prof. Paulina Wong Head of Science Unit Actions in alliance with UN sustainable goals IN THIS semester...
