…when he woke the next morning and was faced with the page he had written in the night, sometimes with puzzlement at what was written until the memory of the dream was jogged by the graphics across the paper. And yet sometimes the dream remained so clear and vivid that he had no need of the paper in order to know what had happened while he was sleeping: there were times that the dream was so clear that it seemed to be even more so than reality.

In August 1997, Clare was concerned with a statement made by Princess Diana that she was about to go public about three things ‘that would shock the world’. As she had recently been divorced from Prince Charles, and their two sons were second and third in line to the throne, there was some speculation as to whether or not one of these ‘things’ would be an announcement of her marriage to Dodi Fayed, son of Harrod’s owner Mohammed Al Fayed, who was something of a thorn in the side of the British establishment. The personal happiness of Dodi and Di (as the press dubbed them) could cast a long shadow.

HERE COMES THE DREAMS “… But no sooner had he taken a step towards them as they seemed to recognise him than the dream took another twist. Suddenly they gestured him to stay back and stepped away from the car themselves. As Chris stepped back, the car started of its own accord, and the engine revved. It got louder, whining at the strain, and before he had a chance to take in what was happening the engine of the Imp blew up, obscuring his grandparents and their house in a blur of smoke. Chris, standing in front of the car, was protected from the blast: not just because this was a dream, but because the Hillman Imp was unusual amongst British cars of the period in that its engine was actually at the rear of the car. Therefore, any blast was actually directed backwards.
