Voids And Permeable Solids: A green permeable boundary in a historical landscape, towards a strategy of

urban

decompression and reconciliation. From ‘permeability’ over ‘dematerialisation’ to ‘hardcore heritage’ and ‘strategic greenification’, each of these issues were identified in context, investigated in their essence and synthesized in meticulously and sensitive graphics, associated with the research field and research methods of Architectural Anthropology. The re-identification of the space’ in general and the unbuilt public space in particular, addresses the need to decompress and mediate the ‘urban behaviorology’ through designing. The aim was designing the VOIDS rather than the SOLIDS. The kazerma building is here re-designed as a ‘TRA - open plek in het bos’. Translated a ‘open place in the woods to among other usages buffer fire incidences’. Here, in reverse mode, ’TRA’ intends to reconnect rather than to buffer of separate. Like a minefield, what today is a void around Kazerne, is configured as a new solid: a very dense but always permeble green solid. Usually greenification dominate just the natural landscape, now has a strong impact on the urban texture, on architecture, on the perception of the heritage.

This ring is a permeable boundary. It is not a path to go, it is not a connection between the fortifications: it is

green permeable boundary between city and suburban, in an historical landscape. This border uses nature, history and education to offer citizens a place for interaction and a

urban decompression. The permeable terrain, the protection of the trees, the occasional but many ancient military buildings that today represent no more oppression and fear, but permeability and freedom: all elements that allow a dilated fruition of time and public space, an urban space of reconciliation and decompression.

In the context of an ongoing international research on the concepts of

“Co-production” and its influence on

the development of inclusive urban spaces leaded by Dr.-Ing. Paola Alfaro d’Alençon, this thesis aims to

understand and analyze the social and spatial strategies underlying some projects that are developing or that have been developed with inclusive intents and processes towards the community of Santiago de Chile. In the case study city, architecture presents itself as a tool with the power to increase or fight the segregation and inequality of which the Chilean city is a victim.

deriva through the spaces, times and dreams of Genova ; I focused on some wonderful I took part in a

episodes of today’s city, its past and its imaginative component. The exploration, casual and naïve, took place in a programmatically distorted spatial unit, which

temporal, spatial and dreamlike dimensions. On the same confuses

map there are existing, disappeared and never appeared architectures. Distant times merge synchronously, responding only to the criterion of

wonder.

The aim is therefore to study a method of perception and visualization of the city, which consists in the elaboration of a tracing of a drift hypothesized in time and space.

The map is based on the mapping of Genoa, on which the “significant units” of the environment are identified through the design of plans. These are landmarks of the city.

After defining the component linked to space and the perception of its parts, the temporal and dreamlike dimensions take over. On this basis, three-dimensional representations of the buildings that have directed my

flânerie on one side rather than another are drawn.

intent of the project is to restore the legibility of the historical spaces present, in an attempt to make them appreciable and perceptible even during the temporary functions that the church performs.

Green whales conceives the redevelopment of the Gavoglio area in view of a controlled management of the

greenery

and the built environment.

The green whales reply to the different requests of the area: altimetric, functional and vegetational. Thanks to light

walkways

floating in

the greenery, a new accessibility to the Gavoglio area is possible. Along these, there is also a multi-purpose space, a kindergarten and a cafe. Actually, the intervention deals with recovering the existing structures: both the Caserma and the Proiettificio reply to the functional program containing an hotel, a coworking space and a museum.

Substance fuses with nature, identifying an and

intimate and emotional place. The space is defined by rigid lines

pure forms that give life to a severe and austere environment. The light penetrates the interior decisively

through a clean cut in the volume. Cement, with its fine grain size, highlights the concept of elegance and essentiality.

The competition request is the realization of a floating accommodation for students using the

steelMAX® construction system.

SteelMAX® is a structure in multi-function thin steel profiles for the most varied uses such as the construction and covering of dwellings and buildings in general, combining lightness, versatility and speed of execution. This structural solution is the combination of a standard IT support with the design of the steelMAX® structure product realized on the specifications defined for each single project. It consists of a vertical frame and a horizontal structure, made of light steel profiles, assembled as a mesh-lattice. Among the various possibilities we have chosen to work directly on the barges located in Calata Molo Vecchio, rethought by Renzo Piano. The project is grafted into the preexistence, penetrating it and digging beneath the platform that can now be walked on. The pre-existing structural mesh becomes the generator of the interior spaces, giving life to a new shape. This volume responds to the constraints imposed by the seniority. Spaces are shaped by the need to be properly illuminated, based on the function they possess.

The peace pavilion is designed as a real

levee

: a public space of interaction with the possibility of aggregation by river and by

land. A levee, a permeable boundary that merges, connects, not only through

practical action

contemplation

but also through

. A levee of peace. A border in earthbags, which in the collective imagination reminds division,

war and oppression, here and today it becomes a border of interaction experienced among land and sea. This is a peace process. The Casamance river is navigable with small boats up to the town of Sédhiou, 130 kilometers from the river mouth: Sédhiou is therefore the last city reachable by river. The peace pavilion, thanks to its wharf, gives to the inhabitants of the village a safe harbour, a space for fluvial relations, giving structure to the pier. A rational and constant connection: a pier, that is building a strong dialogue between land and sea, that is building peace. Eartbags and bamboo are in strong connection with the natural elements of sand, sea and sky.

How can we claim a room is for

communication when communication

itself is instrincsict to any human space? Communication is linked to man.

Architecture is in itself conceived for man, it is brought to support social relations.

Man, by his presence, make spaces places where intercation takes place.

Today humans need a place for communication that is shield from the

virtual

world that dominated spaces originally conceived for physical interaction. By making tangible the interconnections of the virtual network, one can trigger a process of questioning one’s own being and behaviour: a physical net that invades the human mind whenever it is lost in virtual reality: that is an obstacle between people, a weave of threads that prevent them from interacting. Physicality and virtuality coexist: we need a good balance between them in order to revalue the communication componenet of spaces and to have a healthy interaction both in a physical and in a virtual way.

The

sensory experience, by now, is placed in a subordinate position to the virtual world. Most of the

moments we experience during the day are accompanied by one or more technological devices: being comfortable on the sofa watching TV, relaxing under the blankets with the smartphone in your hand, going to the park and taking a selfie to share with your own friends. With the coming of ebooks, we have become even more aware of the value of the paper book in its material aspect. The case of the library without books puts the spotlight on the

dematerialization of

space: what place, if not the library of the future, can symbolize a new vision of materiality? As the book itself becomes more and more dematerialized, its reader materialize in new positions and configurations. The body, the first burden for cognitive tools, today returns to be the primary tool with which to experience and know, even complex physical formulas.

Are we sure that the best position to learn is that of the student bent over the desk? How does

sitting in the future

evolve? From individual study to relaxation, the seat changes in the most varied configurations in the three dimensions.

Work Experiences

Forte San Martino, come molti episodi genovesi e italiani, incarna l’oblio, aspetto speculare della memoria. In psicologia, per la teoria del decadimento, ogni nuova ripetizione di un’esperienza consolida la

“traccia mnestica” ad essa associata.

L’oblio sarebbe quindi dovuto a una mancanza di sufficienti ripetizioni.

Come far riemergere la memoria dall’oblio? Forse, cercando di consolidare i processi mnestici di base: la codifica, la ritenzione, la ripetizione e la organizzazione, il recupero. Così la memoria del forte, in questo progetto, vuole avvalersi del fatto che ogni memoria è una

memoria ricostruttiva.

E la ricostruzione implica che per accedere ai ricordi si debbano integrare fra loro diverse informazioni: attraverso la codifica e poi la reiterazione e organizzazione della storia e del contesto del forte, si può auspicare un vero e proprio recupero di essa.

Si parla non tanto di rispolverare una memoria, ma del tentativo di plasmarne una nuova, una futura, costruire una nuova storia, attraverso la rievocazione e il riconoscimento dell’oggetto di memoria. Prendere coscienza del suo valore attraverso la ripetizione e l’organizzazione di quelle interazioni prodotte dalle forze di interesse che gravitano intorno all’oggetto in questione. Una memoria d’interesse. Una memoria tenuta in vita da tutti quei processi che riguardano la vita del forte, e che spazialmente, in realtà, non si collocano all’interno di esso, ma nel suo intorno, nella sua contemplazione. Il forte sta, il forte permane in uno stato di quiete, si mostra come quinta scenica di un intreccio di reiterazioni di interazioni d’interesse legate ed intorno ad esso.

Blueprint is the title of the vision for the city given by Renzo Piano Building Workshop as a free contribution to the future

port, industrial, planning and social development of Genoa. The competition, based on this vision of city development, seeks to be the instrument to deal with the issue of the urban voids. It also seeks to recover the area of the former Genoa International Trade Fair, by analogy with the experiments and plans of this kind being produced nationally and internationally, so translating this issue into a concrete project of high quality. The goal is therefore to redevelop the area of ​​the former Fair through urban mending, recalling with this expression the old practice that once required a careful care not to waste and mend: a practice that today must be translated into the desire to recompose the fabric urban filling their voids.

Publications

The video “Fallout” was conceived and filmed by students of the “Architectural Design” course held by Valter Scelsi at Genoa University. The aim was to focus attention on contemporary architecture and its maintenance: when architectural value is overlooked, even valuable buildings are affected by deterioration. Since its construction, the SMFN Department has been considered to be entirely out of context; the people who study there and live nearby joke about its presence, often remarking on its similarity to a spaceship or factory. The short film aims to show this resemblance, pointing out the result of the building’s neglected maintenance. The camera explores the building discovering its activities step by step, and only the final scene reveals its current function. Despite its unappreciated form, the SMFN Department is well organised in terms of its functions and is well perceived by students who can use the entire front of the building for studying and relaxation. The only functional problems, in the laboratories and professors’ offices, are due to bad maintenance which has worsened in recent years. Nowadays, the complete repair of the roof would require the full replacement of the beams and glass. This is the “Fallout” of the building: it has been neglected so much that it appears impossible to fully recover it; students work in a building that will never perform at its best due to past misunderstandings.
