ITINERANT AGORA

CIVIC MULTI-USE

A short study into the Greek Agora, this installation sits as 6 playful characters surrounding a public courtyard.

The geometry was inspired by the courtyard buildings of Copenhagen and became a caricature of the architecture beloved by the city: fanciful and curious.

This space is a civic center, market place, and a site for public gathering.

The Agora acted as the center of social and political life

in

ancient

Greece.

This

proposal

recreates

a

modern agora in Vesterbro, Copenhagen, transforming an under utilized black-top court into a hub for social engagement,

creation,

and

contemplation.

Made

of

plywood, this installation could easily be picked up and moved throughout the city in any open space. Any of the individual spaces could stand on their own if a community needed a specific program, but great ideas come from the complex intermingling of functions, and they are strongest together.

2023 HISTORIC + RESIDENTIAL

Seated within historic Summerville is a house built in the 1800's. Our clients needed an addition that could house modern programming to allow for the restoration of the original house. The modern gable addition looks out over the properties oldest live oak, and attaches to the historic home gently with glass hyphens allowing the original walls and siding to be visible from the garden.

Construction was completed February 2024, final photographs to come.

The addition is connected to the main house by a two story entry hall that allows light to filter through the house from the north and the east. The east facing gable end on the modern addition faces out over the properties garden and lets in the morning light. Although the historic house had been renovated and added to over time, we were able to restore the historic portion of its house to the original floor plan by removing some of the program and placing it into our addition. We also used double-height glass hyphens to gently attach the addition, so that the original shape of the house would be visible from the outside.

Throughout

this

project

there

was

an

emphasis

on

delicacy and views. The client wanted an addition that was contextual to the house, but had a clear division.

We used some key proportions and scales from the main house to ensure the addition fit the rhythm, and used

FALL 2017 EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION

A Montessori is intended to be a complete sensory experience for children, full of rich tactile experiences, and exciting learning opportunities. The Sensorium reads as a dream of marble and concrete, with nooks to curl into, and columns to hide behind — full of detail and complexities for children to explore and grow.

This project was created within the context of masterplanning North Lawrence.

Sensorium

North Lawrence, historically known as Jefferson, is north of the Kansas River. The area was devastated by the Great Flood of 1951 and not much permanent development has happened on the land since. Our studio proposed a masterplan for the area that included various forms of small-scale affordable housing, as well as public infrastructure and resources for Lawrence, such as a new Montessori.

Sensorium

Narrow aisles, expansive light wells, balconies, courtyards, colonnades, and vaults come together to create a variety of different moments, so that wandering around often feels like exploring a new landscape. The patten of windows in the stoic facade gives a hint as to what is inside, allowing glimpses of curiosity to come through. The large windows let light seep into the building, and there are also two large light wells that create a contemplative space with dramatic lighting.

The thick castle-like walls create coves for the children to read a book, take a nap, or hide when their parents come to pick them up. Colonnades in the classrooms provide room for individual work spaces along the sides, as well as a gathering space for story time and allclass activities in the center. The groin vaults give a sense of scale and division to the space, allowing the children to feel like they are in their own world. The central courtyard gives the school a place to let the children run and play in the fresh air.

The southern portion of the building is mixed use, with the ground floor being a cafe for parents to grab coffee before picking up their rambunctious children from the Sensorium. The upper floors are an apartment building for the community.

In modern-day Geyre, Turkey, sits Aphrodisias, a Roman city that flourished from the first through seventh century AD. I worked at the site as a research assistant, doing hand drawings, surveying, and photogrammetry models in collaboration with NYU and Dr. Phil Stinson.

The Sebasteion is a temple complex that was built in 20 AD and dedicated to Aphrodite and the Julio-Claudian Emperors. Approaching the complex you pass through a propylon into a narrow processional street with two portico buildings on the north and south sides, each paid for by a different prominent family of the time and covered in some 200 sculptural relief panels. The

processional streets end in a Corinthian temple.

My

work

on-site

consisted

of

field

drawings

of

individual architectural blocks that were excavated by the archaeology team. These ranged from fragments of

columns,

pieces

of

cornices,

or

partial

relief

sculptures. All drawings were done by hand, and then transferred into CAD. I also produced photogrammetry models of each piece, so it could be studied in 3D. The models were then 3D-printed and used to study joint patterns for partial-to-full anastylosis of the buildings.

While the urban fabric of Lawrence, Kansas exists as a Jeffersonian grid, this housing collective diverges from the known and creates its own context within the city.

These are the places where bits and pieces of private life spill into the public sphere, creating a more intimate community.

The site is located in the heart of the city right off of Massachusetts Street, the building peeks through the alley right by the town's beloved antique mall.

is

commercial - bookstores, record shops, and cafes draw Lawrencians into the community.

While just above, the residents have a raised plaza where they can gather with a little more privacy than the public lawns.

The windows on the exterior are positioned at levels to reveal or protect specific moments of the apartments within, and they continue down the open corridors of the complex, allowing neighbors to wave from kitchen sinks, or set up their favorite

Historically the architectural implication of courthouses are intimidatingly grand. They are forbearing and often employ an inaccessible scale. This proposal creates an atmosphere that encourages interaction.

With welcoming curves, intriguing textures, and warm lighting, this courthouse creates a place for community.

This project is in collaboration with Bailey Hiatt, all drawings marked with an asterisk were completed by her.

Courthouses can be incredibly emotional places: from the hardest days of someones life, to the joy that comes with a naturalization ceremony. We aimed to create a space that has ties back to Gothic and Classical forms, with a variety of texture and materials that allow it to feel accessible, while still being monumental.

SPRING 2020 RESEARCH & VISUALIZATION

Informal Transit is an indepth look at infrastructure and movement throughout a city, in order to spark community dialogue about ownership and accessibility of public spaces.

This projects is not a study about efficiency, it is about how transit can strengthen a community through accessibility, public space, and tactical urbanism.

This project started because of a movement in East Lawrence where community members placed lawn chairs at bus stops that were lacking benches. This simple act showed agency and empathy within the community. Movements like these are initiatives started and executed by the community. The city can either choose to embrace and aid these initiatives, or not.

Informal Transit focuses on bringing bottom-up interventions to the public sphere.

I mapped every bus line, and the community amenities that it passed along its route, this would range from clinics and schools, to small take-a-book libraries. I rode the bus almost daily,

documenting

small

encounters

that

I

had with drivers, and overheard conversations between strangers. Through these conversations I began to look at the city through the eyes of a bus rider, and I noticed the failing public infrastructure, along with the growing D.I.Y community response. I overlaid this data on the bus routes to analyze where there were gaps in amenities and resources.

Global Studio was asked to create a community center in Torbeck, Haiti. We set out to design a building that would inspire and protect its community. We wanted to use building techniques and materials that were strong, sustainable, and simple enough that it could be easily replicated throughout the community.

KU Global Studio won the World Architecture Student Award.

domestic spaces in terms of the porch, roof shape, construction, and detailing. Approaching the building, a large covered porch stretches out and invites you in. The gabled roof is supported by a bamboo colonnade that extends back through the entire building. Each column is constructed by bundling four pieces of bamboo together, which support the bamboo trusses that span overhead. The colonnades not only provide structural support, but also create side aisles that

help

to

break

the

space

into

smaller

meeting groups.

Global Studio

The walls for this building are created out of rammed earth, excavated from the site. The walls were broken down into four basic shapes, to decrease waste from the formwork. Taking inspiration from the brightly colored city of Torbeck, we added a richly pigmented strip of red that wraps the building, inside and out.

Global Studio traveled to Haiti to teach the construction methods of rammed earth and bamboo, and work with our community partners. These three weeks were full of road blocks, broken tools, and rain. Construction in Haiti is so different than what we were used to in the states. The Haitian students from the American University of the Caribbean brought invaluable insight to the project. They showed us how they typically ran a construction site, critiqued our design, gave us a direction to move forward in, and even took us on a few adventures.

Our design consisted of knocking down the existing walls to open the studio up to its original layout from the early 20th century. We exposed the original load-bearing limestone walls by sandblasting off layers of plaster. We also removed the linoleum tiling to expose the concrete flooring underneath, with floor mounted outlets that allow for flexibility of furniture. We then mounted a series of cabinets on the wall that would later be turned into a materials library. We wanted students to be able to showcase their work within the studio so we lined the entire studio with felt paneling that helps with acoustics.

The main feature of the Makerstudio is the kinetic wall in the center of the space. A 22-foot long Hackberry counter top connects the two steel columns in the center of the room. The counter is deep, allowing students to meet in groups, build models, and have a standing workspace within the studio. Above the counter is a steel frame, that is set on two jack-screws, allowing it to be raised, from touching the counter top, to touching the steel girder above. The mobility of the walls allows it to be raised on a day-to-day basis, so the counter can be used, and allow light and visual connection into the room, and when it is in the down position the Deko paneling is able to be written on or magnetized to.
