Our MFL curriculum is designed to explore the French language and culture. Our aim is to foster a passion for learning languages and appreciating cultural differences. To make links across the curriculum, children explore France as a country alongside the French language.

Geography – knowing where France and other countries that speak French are located in the world Music – appreciating the French national anthem and songs associated with the French language.

In KS2, the language chosen to explore is French. Pupils in Year 3 currently have a block of French teaching, focusing more on French culture, with a half termly focus on music, songs, stories and celebrations. Pupils in Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6 currently have 1 x lesson per week of French in each half term. Lessons are designed to be progressive and build on prior learning, moving from word to sentence level. Interactive resources with audio support are used and the choice of vocabulary ensures exposure to all the key phonic sounds and ability to build sentences using grammatical knowledge.

Retrieval Practice

• Knowledge, skills and vocabulary are identified • Low stakes quizzing to develop long term memory • Cultural events and celebrations allow children to make links between their language learning and the real world.

Outcomes

Lesson sequences have clear outcomes and assessments are based on these. Quizzing is a vehicle to check out what is being retained and used to deepen knowledge and experiences.

Inclusion.

Everyone in KS2 has access to the KS2 Language Programme of Study. Support is provided for those learners who require it. Opportunities to work with others is used to support and strengthen confidence and enjoyment in learning the French language.
