Dear Parents/Carers, The prospect of making options choices can be eagerly anticipated by some, and dreaded by others. We know that choosing which subjects to study at Key Stage 4 can be difficult and we have created this booklet to support you and your child in making these important decisions.

In the booklet you will find information on each of the subjects available to choose from as well as information about the wider curriculum, so that you and your child can gain a clear understanding of how it all fits together.

In addition to the information contained in this booklet, we invite you to attend our ‘Pathways Evening’ Thursday 5th March from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm. This event provides you with the opportunity to speak with teachers from all subjects alongside presentations from senior staff which will outline the key aspects of our curriculum and the recommendations that we make.

In addition, there are a wide range of people who can help advise you and your child: 





Your child’s Form Tutor, and Mrs Bridgeman (Head of Year 8) will have a good working knowledge of each student’s relative strengths and areas for improvement.

Mrs Joshi and the PSHCE teachers are all involved in delivering careers education as part of the curriculum.

Mr Nelson and other senior staff will carefully analyse options choices, and may arrange interviews for Year 8 students after choices are made to ensure that the subjects chosen match any career or future study aspirations.

In the coming weeks, we advise all our students to keep an open mind about all subjects on offer and to carefully consider how these subjects could open, or close, different future pathways for both education and careers. We will accept the return of pathways forms from Monday 16th of March to the deadline on Thursday 26th March. We won’t accept forms before this window — this is to make sure that enough thinking and discussion time is available for students, parents and teachers in making the best possible choices.

Curriculum The world in which we live and work is rapidly changing and we have created a curriculum which aims to equip our students with the skills and qualifications to adapt and thrive in modern Britain. We offer a wide range of high-quality academic qualifications alongside a growing suite of more vocational courses to suit the needs of all our learners. Importantly, maintaining a broad and balanced curriculum means that no student will make decisions which specialise too early and limit their career pathways when they leave school.

The Academic Curriculum Studying English, English Literature, Maths and Science makes up the ‘core’ academic curriculum for all students, alongside the broader personal education provided by studying Physical Education and Citizenship.

Studying Spanish is part of our core curriculum for our most able students. This is because the skills developed in learning a Modern Foreign Language can stretch and challenge students. A good languages qualification can be a distinct advantage in later life, and is required to complete the English Baccalaureate. All students can opt to do a language should they wish.

Values in Practice Our Year 9 programme has evolved in recent years to ensure that by the age of 15, all students have gone beyond the expectations of the National Curriculum and have learned about the most crucial global issues and forces which will affect their adult lives.

Our Year 9 ‘Values in Practice’ curriculum will develop the links between the subjects of the national curriculum, and prepare students for life in 21st century Britain. This course, which has been developed in consultation with students, teaches citizenship, economic wellbeing, personal, social, health and relationships education, as well as providing students with the cultural capital to thrive in the world beyond school.

Physical Education In an age of ever-increasing distractions and pressures, it is more vital than ever that young adults learn how to lead happy and healthy lifestyles, based on values of teamwork, self-respect and inclusion. We are proud that Physical Education represents a core part of the curriculum which we offer to all of our students, and see this as an essential aspect of our students’ education.

Futures Students will complete their GCSEs and equivalent Level 1/2 qualifications at the end of Year 11, but must remain in education or training until they are aged 18.

Further education providers such as Colleges and Sixth Forms will traditionally only accept students on A-Level or other Level 3 courses if they have achieved 5 GCSEs at Grade 4 (formerly Grade C) or above, including English and Mathematics. Given the national changes in the grading structure and guidance from the Department for Education, the ‘good pass’ is now seen as grade 5 in the 9 -1 grading system. Despite the changes in grades, places at Colleges and in school Sixth Forms are expected to continue to be competitive so it is recommended that students should aim for at least a grade 6 in any subjects that they wish to study at A-level.

Level 1 and 2 courses are available at Colleges which do offer places with lower entry requirements as a result of the lower level qualification being offered.

You also need to be aware that all students are required to study and English and Mathematics until the age of 18 if they have not yet secured a pass (currently grade 4 or above). Often the courses offered for this resit are equivalent qualifications and so are not actual GCSE passes. It is therefore vitally important to obtain these grades before your child leaves Waseley Hills wherever this is possible.

Three of the most important subjects are English, Mathematics and Science. These are important for all employment and career paths. Therefore, students should aim to maximise their grades in these subjects regardless of what they plan to do after they leave Waseley Hills High School.

Pathways This year, we are taking a new approach to our options process. Whichever pathway a student is on, they will have two ‘free choice’ options. These will not be chosen from predefined blocks, but instead will be a ranked preference from all the available options subjects. The school will then construct the timetable to give as many students as possible their first choice options and this should mean that more students are able to do more of the subjects that matter to them.

All students will have the opportunity to study the complement of subjects which contribute to the English Baccalaureate. These are ‘facilitating’ subjects, which are highly valued by employers, colleges and universities the world over, and include: 

The Core Curriculum Pathway The majority of our students have a wide range of interests and many are not yet sure what they would like to do when they leave school. Our core curriculum is designed to give all our students a broad and balanced timetable which will keep their options open, so that students can take time to gain a balanced education before specialising towards their chosen career at post-16 level.

Students on the core curriculum pathway will be required to study the following in addition to their two ‘free’ choices: 

One English Baccalaureate course: Geography, History or Spanish



One of our vocational courses: Creative Media Production, Digital Information Technology, Enterprise or Children’s Learning and Development

Students on the core curriculum pathway can choose to take both a humanity and a language, and if they do they will receive a special English Baccalaureate certificate from the school.

The English Baccalaureate Pathway For some students, especially those who are keen to progress to Universities, studying A-levels in these subjects represents the best pathway for progression, supported by strong passes in a range of subjects at GCSE. Indeed, the Russell Group of Universities recommends that students study two facilitating subjects at A-level in Year 12.

Students who have been selected for the English Baccalaureate pathway will be required to study the following in addition to their two ‘free’ choices: 

Either Geography or History

This means that students on the English Baccalaureate pathway will study at least one subject in all of the categories above, and will be awarded a special English Baccalaureate certificate by the school.

Accelerated Science Some students who have shown particular skill in Science will be invited to study an ‘Accelerated Science’ programme. Instead of the Combined Science course, these students will study Separate Sciences (Biology, Chemistry and Physics) and will also follow a bespoke PSHCE programme as part of their core curriculum.

This will not take up an option choice — these students will be able to study Separate Sciences ‘for free’ and will then achieve an additional GCSE qualification (gaining six ‘Core’ GCSEs instead of five, and four option choices).

Personalised Curriculum For some students with specific additional needs or particular circumstances, it is not appropriate to study the full suite of nine GCSEs. For these selected students we offer a personalised curriculum, which will include additional literacy and numeracy support.

How should I choose?

Up until now your lessons have been decided for you. There will still be some subjects that you have to take. You have to take these subjects because they help you to develop the skills you’ll need in the future, like reading and writing clearly, being able to use numbers, and problem solving. However, Year 8 is when you can choose some of the subjects you want to study over the next three years. It is important to make the right choice and choosing the right subjects is essential. Some of the following might help: 

You may already enjoy some subjects and want to continue studying these.



If you have an idea of what you want to do in the future, like going to University, there may be some subjects that you need to take.



You may enjoy some things at school more than others, like written assignments or projects, doing experiments in Science activities or speaking a foreign language.



You may have a particular talent for sport or playing a musical instrument.



You may be practical and enjoy using your hands to draw or make things.



You may be skilled in using technology and ICT.



Perhaps you already have a good idea of the sort of job you’d like to do in the future. If you can’t yet decide what you would like to do in the future, keep your options open by choosing a broad range of subjects.

Information for Parents When making choices, there are several factors you should consider with your child: 

Your child’s current working at grades and attitude to learning scores



The subjects that they are good at and enjoy



The subjects that will help particular career, employment or study routes and will maximise your child’s opportunities in the future



The wide range of advice and guidance available to you and your child

Whilst everything will be done to ensure your child studies his/her first choice of subjects, there may be instances where this cannot be guaranteed. If this occurs, an alternate/reserve choice will be discussed and you will be informed – if you do not hear from us, then no news is good news! It is vital, therefore, that all choices (including alternates/reserves) are made very carefully.

Courses can only run where group sizes are viable. When the course is oversubscribed we will consider Attitude to Learning and Progress grades when helping us to decide which students will be offered a place and who will be given an alternate/reserve choice.

Lastly, please note that timetabling and interviewing students after the collection of options preferences is a long process and therefore final choices are not likely to be confirmed before June 2020.

Grading the new GCSEs

Reformed GCSEs were introduced starting in September 2015, and are graded 9-1 rather than A* to G. For the first few years, the grades will be awarded so that, nationally: 

Broadly the same proportion of students will achieve a grade 4 and above as previously achieved a grade C



Broadly the same proportion of students will achieve a grade 7 or above as previously achieved a grade A



The bottom of grade 1 will be aligned with the bottom of grade G



According to the DfE, a grade 5 will be the new standard of a ‘good pass’

GCSE Core Curriculum English Language AQA Subject Leader: Miss M. Williams

Why should I study it?

All students will be prepared for both English and English Literature and will achieve two GCSEs. Our objective is that students develop an appreciation and love of English Language and all aspects of our multimedia society.

In English Language, students develop skills in personal, expressive and informative writing, mastering speaking and listening for different purposes, report-writing, note-making, speech and letter-writing.

Comprehension is developed through these means as is essay-writing where students extend and re-create the material they have read. All of these are not only vital cross curricular skills, but also skills for life.

What will I learn?

English Language and English Literature are taught as a combined course at GCSE. In English Language, students will study and be tested on reading for meaning (modern, earlier 20th century and pre 19th century), persuasive and creative writing and grammar and spelling.

As well as this, teachers cultivate an environment in lessons which supports each student’s cultural, aesthetic, creative and intellectual development.

Where can it take me?

The curriculum has changed and this has allowed for a closer focus on the key skills needed for not only English Language, but other subjects, post-16 study, university and work.

Students will acquire a range of transferable skills such as communication skills and the ability to analyse and empathise; it will support them in learning to work independently.

Language is a flexible subject that opens up a wide range of career choices, including opportunities in areas such as the media, marketing, advertising and teaching.

GCSE Core Curriculum English Literature AQA Subject Leader: Miss M. Williams

Why should I study it?

All students will be prepared for both English Language and English Literature and will achieve two GCSEs. Our objective is that students develop an appreciation and love of the rich tapestry of Literature from Medieval through Shakespeare to more modern texts such as An Inspector Calls or The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time.

In English Literature, students develop skills in personal, expressive and informative writing, mastering speaking and listening for different purposes. Comprehension is developed through the text studied, as is essay-writing where students extend and recreate the material they have read. All of these are not only vital cross curricular skills, but also skills for life.

What will I learn?

English language and English Literature are taught as a combined course at GCSE. In English Literature, students will study and be tested on a Shakespeare play, modern prose, poetry - comparison and unseen and a nineteenth century novel.

As well as this, teachers cultivate an environment in lessons which supports each student’s cultural, aesthetic, creative and intellectual development.

Where can it take me?

The curriculum has changed and this has allowed for a closer focus on the key skills needed for not only English Literature, but other subjects, post 16 study, university and work.

Students will acquire a range of transferable skills such as communication skills and the ability to analyse and empathise; it will support them in learning to work independently.

Literature is a highly regarded and respected subject and will provide a firm foundation for the study of any arts-based subject at university, and also open opportunities in areas such as the media, marketing, advertising and teaching.

GCSE Core Curriculum Mathematics Edexcel Subject Leader: Dr. S. Parsons

Why should I study it?

We use Mathematics every day when we shop, bake or plan a journey. Being numerate is equally as essential a skill in areas such as Finance, Business, Health and Sport as it is in Engineering, Science and Medicine. Qualifications in Mathematics will never go out of fashion.

Through studying Mathematics, students will gain such fundamental skills needed for employment as problem-solving, analysing data, communication, logical thinking and attention to detail, whilst also

What will I learn?

Course content: On the Edexcel GCSE in Mathematics there are six topic areas - Number, Algebra, Statistics and Data Handling, Ratio, Proportion and Rates of Change, and Geometry and Measures.

Entry Tiers: The Mathematics GCSE is tiered, with grades 5-1 being awarded on the Foundation tier examinations and grades 9-4 being awarded on the Higher tier. Students will be entered for the most appropriate tier based on performance.

Assessment: There are three examinations all taken in Year 11 and no coursework. One is a non-calculator paper and the other two both require the use of a calculator. Each exam is 90 minutes in length.

Where can it take me?

A good pass in Mathematics is required for almost all Level 3 qualifications after completing Year 11, wherever you may choose to go. Achieving grade 6 or higher in Mathematics is essential for those who wish to take A-Levels in Mathematics or Science, which can lead to careers in medicine, engineering, finance and research. Employers value applicants with a good grade in Mathematics because the skill set is vital for business.

GCSE Core Curriculum Combined Science OCR A ‘Gateway’ Subject Leader: Mrs. L. Eades, Director of Faculty

Why should I study it?

Science is not only the study of the world around us, both natural and technological, but is also the unique combination of skills by which we come to understand it. In order to invent, create and develop, we need to come up with theories, test them, share our results and agree our conclusions. We are all scientists, every time we improve a recipe, perfect a free-kick, share a new discovery or work out the best way to accomplish a task. These problem-solving, truth-seeking logic skills are essential for modern life.

What will I learn?

Unless opting for ‘Separate Sciences’, all students must study the ‘Combined Science’ GCSE course, which is unique in awarding a double grade and counting as two GCSEs. Students cover a range of topics in each discipline, sitting two 70-minute exams in each of the three subjects at the end of Year 11.

Biology: Cells, Animal and Plant Systems, Organisms, Communities, Evolution and Inheritance Chemistry: Particles, Elements and Compounds, Chemical reactions, Predicting and Identifying Physics: Matter, Forces, Electricity and Magnetism, Waves, Radiation and Energy In addition, students will cover ‘Global Challenges’ in each discipline and also learn a wide range of essential practical skills. There is no coursework.

It should be noted that 10% of the marks available rely upon scientific literacy and 20% of the marks rely on GCSE level mathematics.

Where can it take me?

Careers in Science are not only interesting and challenging but, as good scientists are in demand, they are high-paying as well. Many employment sectors value the skills scientists develop, including Finance, Physiotherapy, Police and Legal professions, and Aerospace and Automotive Engineering industries. Those considering specialist Science careers need high grades and would benefit from taking Separate Sciences.

Good passes in GCSE Combined Sciences are essential for acceptance on many level 3 courses after completing Year 11, including Physical Education, Psychology, some Computer Science courses and A-levels in the Sciences themselves.

GCSE Core Curriculum Spanish AQA Subject Leader: Ms. C. Gibson, Director of Faculty

Why should I study it?

Studying Spanish with your other subjects will give you the type of broad education that employers are looking for. A language qualification alongside other subjects shows flexibility and an ability to solve problems. Success in one language shows understanding of how the language learning process works, as well as the potential to learn new languages. By the end of the course you will be able to take part in conversations in Spanish as well as write using a range of tenses and you will be able to express and justify opinions on a wide range of issues.

What will I learn?

The GCSE course is split into 3 main themes: Identity and Culture Local, National, International and Global areas of interest Current and Future Study and Employment.

Assessment is by examination at the end of Year 11 in four skills: - Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. Each skill is worth 25% and there is no coursework. There are 2 tiers of entry: Foundation (Grades 1-5) and Higher (Grades 4-9).

Where can it take me?

Employment rates for people with languages skills are high and there are excellent opportunities for a wide variety of areas including careers in Business, Leisure and Tourism, Sport, the Armed Forces, Medicine, Airlines, Teaching, Marketing, Publishing and Translating.

Many careers also become ‘transferable’ with language qualifications so you are more likely to travel in your job and earn a higher salary. Study of languages enables you to work abroad in many ‘domestic’ professions such as Building, Plumbing, Physiotherapy etc, the Hotel and Catering industry, Banking and Finance and Civil Service. Studying at foreign universities is also becoming increasingly popular.

GCSE Core Curriculum Geography AQA Subject Leader: Mrs. L. Harris, Director of Faculty

Why should I study it?

Want to know how today’s world was shaped? Want to know the challenges we face in the future? Want to get out into the field and see what you are studying? Choose GCSE Geography.

Improve your skills: Literacy - extended answers like you practise in KS3 Numeracy - interpreting and constructing graphs, using simple statistics in fieldwork Team work - collecting data, analysing what you find out and evaluating your independent work

What will I learn?

Paper 1: Living with the physical environment: natural hazards, weather hazards, climate change, tropical storms, ecosystems, rivers and coasts.

Examination: 90 minutes (35%) Paper 2: Challenges in the human environment: urbanisation, sustainability, economic and social development, migration and resource management.

Examination: 90 minutes (35%) Paper 3: Issue evaluation and fieldwork: One day of physical fieldwork, one day of human fieldwork and use of a resource booklet to evaluate an issue (decided by the AQA examination board)

Where can it take me?

Anywhere you want. According to the Royal Geographical Society, Geography graduates have some of the highest rates of graduate employment.

Geography is great for any kind of career that involves the environment, planning or collecting and interpreting data. Popular careers for people with geography qualifications include: town or transport planning, surveying, conservation, sustainability, waste and water management, environmental planning, tourism and weather forecasting.

The army, police, government, research organisations, law and business worlds also love the practical research skills that geographers develop. As geographers learn about human and population development, Geography can be useful for jobs in charity and international relations too.

GCSE Core Curriculum History AQA Subject Leader: Mrs. S. Dumycz

Why should I study it?

History is one of the most valued subjects at GCSE as it opens the doors to many pathways for the future.

If you’ve ever asked the question, “Why?”, then History will provide many of the answers as to why our world operates the way it does - Brexit, Donald Trump, North Korea, immigration, poverty and many more.

At GCSE you will learn how to analyse speeches and paintings and how to construct a forceful and balanced argument.

What will I learn?

From gangsters to Gandhi; the Vikings to the Vietnam War; Hastings to Hoovervilles – there’s a bit of everything in GCSE History. We follow the AQA specification with four units of study and two examinations at the end of Year 11.

Paper 1 is on America 1920-1973 and the Korean and Vietnam Wars.

Paper 2 covers Empires and Migration 790AD to 2018 (Vikings, Normans, Hundred Years War, British Empire, immigration and emigration and the EU etc) along with a depth study on the Norman Conquest.

Where can it take me?

History is seen as a facilitating subject by the prestigious Russell Group of top universities and is ideal preparation for future studies in any essay-based subject.

Any career involving analysing or writing reports will utilise skills developed in History, whilst people as varied as comedians Al Murray, Sacha Baron Cohen (Ali G), top politicians, Body Shop founder Anita Roddick and pop star Shakira all studied History at university.

GCSE Option Art, Craft and Design OCR Subject Leader: Mr. D. Moore, Director of Faculty

Why should I study it?

Students choose to study Art, Craft and Design for a variety of reasons. If you're creative, imaginative and you are keen to express your ideas using a variety of materials, then an Art, Craft and Design GCSE is an excellent choice, especially if you enjoy practical activities.

Arts students are highly sought-after as more companies than ever before are looking for innovation and a fresh way of thinking. A key benefit of this course is developing skills sought by employers such as learning to effectively communicate, teamwork, problem-solving, critical thinking and independent working skills.

What will I learn?

It is an exciting practical course which enables you to explore a wide variety of approaches and experiences including painting, drawing, printmaking, critical studies, digital imagery, mixed media and threedimensional work. Recording images and representing the world around you are at the heart of all of our projects.

Work is assessed by using criteria set by the exam board and takes into account the process of gathering visual information, understanding the works of artists, developing, reviewing and modifying ideas, accumulating skills and producing art work which demonstrates your creative ability. A coursework project contributes 60% of your final mark, alongside a practical examination making up the remaining 40%.

Where can it take me?

An Art, Craft and Design course is a great way to open the door to many careers in the creative industries and to give you a set of transferable skills that you will take with you for the rest of your life!

This course will give you a broad foundation to enter further education here at school or at college.

Ultimately, this could lead to a career in Architecture, Film, Television, Theatre, Fashion, Animation, Computer Game Design, Advertising and many more creative roles within the wider arts industry.

Please note: As digital devices may be required at certain stages of this course, school policy on mobile devices may be relaxed in this subject area strictly at the discretion of the teacher.

GCSE Option Business Studies Eduqas Subject Leader: Mrs. E. Sellers, Director of Faculty

Why should I study it?

Every organisation of every size has to consider costs and revenues, customers and competitors. Charities, hospitals, schools and large global brands such as Starbucks, Coca Cola, Nike and Apple all employ people with business skills, experience and qualifications. Business Studies provides a universal skill set that can be used wherever you are in the world and whatever organisation you may work for.

The course will focus on developing clear and well justified recommendations using current and modern contexts from the world you live in and will be employed in. You will identify and understand the factors that businesses consider every day in every decision they make.

What will I learn?

You will learn about how the world of business works and its relevance to almost every aspect of modern society. Amongst other topics, you will learn about business ownership, finance, marketing and economics and discover some of the methods and techniques used to analyse an organisation’s performance.

Assessment is 100% exam-based. There are 2 papers, the first exploring the theory covered in lessons and how it can be applied in different business contexts. The second paper will assess students’ ability to understand data and how a business uses this information in effective decision-making.

Where can it take me?

A GCSE in Business Studies can lead to a range of exciting opportunities to study business-related subjects at a higher level. Business can be the gateway into a number of great career choices: as well as being a relevant and interesting subject in its own right, it is a useful supplement subject alongside almost any degree course at university. Some common courses to combine with Business are Law, Accounting, Economics, Journalism, English, ICT and Engineering.

We live in a global world and technology has enabled even the smallest business to access international markets. Business Studies is a universal subject. There are few, if any, careers for which an understanding of business would not be of benefit. Business Studies can also be key to attaining highly paid and challenging roles in all levels of management in all industries.

Option BTEC Tech Award in Creative Media Production Pearson Subject Leader: Mr. D. Moore, Director of Faculty

Why should I study it?

The creative media sector is a dynamic and rewarding area to work in. This industry involves a wide range of practical processes from broadcast media to interactive products. So, if you’re a creative type with a good imagination, this course gives you the opportunity to bring your ideas to life.

This qualification is the same size and level as a GCSE, aimed at those who are interested in pursuing a career in creative media production.

What will I learn?

It will involve working to a design brief, identifying and exploring different media products then creating your own audio/moving image pieces, advertising graphics and interactive design work.

Students are assessed by completing a series of mini tasks which are part of a larger project. Together, these projects form a portfolio of work for units 1 and 2 of the BTEC, which counts towards 60% of the final qualification grade.

Towards the end of the course, a third practical project is set by the examination board. A main piece of work is produced in 9 hours under examination conditions. This provides the remaining 40% of the marks.

Where can it take me?

Students completing this course will gain the necessary skills to continue their media development at further or higher education level. The course offers a broad skills base and develops creativity and practical skills which are relevant and transferable to many areas of work or apprenticeships.

GCSE Option Children’s Learning and Development OCR Subject Leader: Mrs. J. Williams

Why should I study it?

Our new Level 1/2 Cambridge National Certificate in Children’s Learning and Development has been designed to fit into the curriculum and form a key part of a student’s Progress 8 and Attainment 8 approved subjects.

What will I learn?

Unit 1 - 50% Exam Underpins all of the other learning in this qualification. All students will learn the essential knowledge and understanding for child development, covering reproduction, parental responsibility, antenatal care, birth, postnatal checks, care, conditions for development, childhood illnesses and child safety.

Unit 2 - 25% Internally assessed work Knowledge of the equipment needs of babies and young children and an understanding of the factors to be considered when choosing appropriate equipment to meet all of these needs. Students will also gain knowledge of nutrition and hygiene practices.

Unit 3 - 25% Internally assessed work Knowledge of, and skills in, developing activities to observe development norms in children up to the age of five. This unit will include researching, planning, carrying out activities with children and observing the developmental milestones.

Why should I study it?

The BTEC Level 1 and Level 2 Technical Award in Digital Information Technology is for learners who wish to acquire knowledge and technical skills through vocational contexts. You will be developing skills related to data management, data interpretation, data presentation and data protection.

The Award gives you the opportunity to develop sector-specific knowledge and skills in a practical learning environment. You will also develop key skills that prove your aptitude for project planning.

What will I learn?

This qualification has three components that focus on the assessment of knowledge, skills and practices.

These are all essential to developing a basis of progression.

There are 3 compulsory components, the third assessed externally and providing 40% of the marks.

1. Exploring User Interface Design Principles and Project Planning Techniques 2. Collecting, Presenting and Interpreting Data 3. Effective Digital Working Practices

Where can it take me?

The digital sector is a major source of employment in the UK, with over 2 million people working in digital companies and more than 50,000 digital jobs advertised at any one time. Digital skills span all industries; almost all jobs in the UK today require employees to have a good level of digital literacy.

Learners who achieve Level 1 in the BTEC Award might consider progression to Level 2 Post-16 in a range of technical routes designed to lead to work. They could also study the Technical Certificate in IT support or Digital Technology Post-16.

Learners who achieve Level 2 might consider progression to A Levels as preparation for entry to higher education in a range of subjects or study a vocational qualification at Level 3, which can prepare learners to enter employment or apprenticeships, or move on to higher education by studying a degree in the digital sector.

GCSE Option Drama Edexcel Subject Leader: Mrs. K. Teasdale

Why should I study it?

Drama GCSE strikes the perfect balance between being a creative, engaging and practical subject as well as being rigorously academic. The course is designed to equip students with not only performance skills but also to teach the value of in depth text analysis and understanding. Drama GCSE explicitly teaches widely transferable skills such as: collaboration, experimentation, negotiation and team work; resilience; creativity; evaluation and analysis, problem solving and initiative; self-confidence; and emotional intelligence.

What will I learn?

Unit 1 : Devising - 40% of the G.C.S.E. Pupils will create and develop an original devised performance from a choice of stimuli. Pupils will be assessed on their performance and their analysis and evaluation of the devising process (coursework portfolio).

Unit 2 : Performance from text - 20 % of the G.C.S.E. Pupils perform two key extracts from a play. Pupils will choose between monologues, duologues or a group performance.

Unit 3 : Theatre Makers in Practice - 40% of the G.C.S.E. Written examination. Practical exploration of one complete play (the GCSE Drama group will choose from: An Inspector Calls, The Crucible, Government Inspector, Twelfth Night, 1984, DNA, Blue Stockings, DNA, or Dr Korczak’s Example). There will also be a live theatre evaluation. Pupils will watch a live performance of their choice.

Where can it take me?

Universities and employers are often interested in people who have studied GCSE Drama as the subject encourages broader thinking and the development of communication, presentation and teamwork skills which are desired attributes in many sectors.

A GCSE in Drama can lead to higher education courses and careers in acting, performing arts, theatre studies, technical theatre, television, film and radio, english, history, cultural, media and social studies.

The creative industries are the fastest growing economic sector in the UK, responsible for more than 2 million jobs and worth over £100 billion to the UK economy per year.

Why should I study it?

This Award gives students the opportunity to develop sector-specific knowledge and skills in a practical learning environment. The main focus is on knowledge, understanding and skills required to research, plan, pitch and review an enterprise idea.

This qualification allows students to apply their knowledge in practical ways, through activities that will enable them to develop their ideas, for example, researching an idea for a small enterprise.

What will I learn?

The course enables students to gain understanding and knowledge whilst also developing practical workplace skills. Students will: * Develop key skills that prove aptitude in planning an enterprise activity, including market research, planning, carrying out financial transactions, communication and problem solving. * Gain knowledge that underpins effective use of skills, such as the features and characteristics of enterprises and entrepreneurs, and the internal and external factors that can affect the performance of an enterprise. * Develop and demonstrate attitudes and ways of working that are considered most important for enterprise, including monitoring and reflecting on performance of an enterprise idea and own use of skills.

Why should I study it?

Why should I study it?

Music GCSE promotes creativity, through performance and composition, and more academic understanding, through listening, analysis and appreciation. The course is designed to develop wellrounded musicians. It also develops transferable skills, for example, confidence, resilience, communication skills, emotional intelligence and reflection.

What will I learn?

Coursework: There are four pieces of coursework—1 solo performance, 1 ensemble performance, I free choice composition and 1 composition set by the exam board. Pupils will practise and record a solo piece, along with a composition in a style of their choosing. Pupils will also need to produce an ensemble performance, along with a composition in a style that will be set by the exam board. They will have a number of stimuli to choose from.

Total Weighting of Coursework – 60 % of the GCSE (performance 30%, composition 30%) Listening Exam: The areas of study include—The Concerto Through Time, Rhythms of the World, Film Music and Conventions of Pop. These areas of study will be used in the listening exam to evaluate pupils’ wider understanding and appreciation of the subject.

Why should I study it?

If you study Physical Education, you will remain healthy, develop your fitness and improve on your ability to work within a team and communicate with others. You will learn the responsibility of being a good sportsperson, alongside the ability to reflect on yourself in order to learn from your mistakes.

What will I learn?

Throughout Year 9 you will be assessed in a variety of different practical sports and ongoing theoreticalbased assessment. The assessment will be split across taught practical lessons and classroom-based theory. Topic areas covered are Anatomy and Applied Physiology, Sport Psychology, Socio-Cultural Influences, Health, Fitness and Wellbeing as well as Physical Training.

Due to the nature of the practical examination content, it is essential that students are at least involved within the school teams. In addition, it is desirable that they are taking part in sports and teams outside of the school setting.

Why should I study it?

Psychology can help you understand yourself and other people. It can help you develop sound analytical skills through applying the scientific method to the study of human behaviour.

Psychology is hugely relevant to our everyday lives including offering explanations for social behaviour (like why people take part in riots) and helping us to understand many aspects of the mind such as sleep, dreaming and memory. A very important part of this course is that it is helping to tackle the stigma surrounding mental health in society.

What will I learn?

The GCSE in Psychology follows a clear and straightforward structure. It contains exciting subject content, helping students explain everyday social phenomena. Topics include Social Influence, Memory, Sleep and Dreaming, Criminal Behaviour, Developmental Psychology, Schizophrenia, Depression and Research Methods.

Students should note there is a significant scientific element to the course and an understanding of the scientific method is needed. At least 25% of the overall mark for the GCSE will be based on performance in research methods questions, of which 10% will be testing your mathematical skills.

Where can it take me?

Psychology can help you along your path to entering people-orientated professions including Sales and Marketing, Management, Human Resources, Journalism, Emergency Services, Medical and Teaching as well as more subject specific careers such as Educational, Clinical, Forensic, Occupational, Counselling, Health and Child Psychology.

Studying Psychology at GCSE is both a fascinating subject in its own right and also excellent preparation for further study at A-level.

GCSE Option Religion, Philosophy and Ethics OCR Subject Leader: Miss K. Bond

Why should I study it?

Critical thinking skills are encouraged and tolerance for different points of view.

Religion, Philosophy and Ethics GCSE is a very popular and successful course. Our results are some of the best in the school, including a significant percentage of high level grades.

What will I learn?

The course covers two main areas: The Study of Religions: beliefs, teachings and practices in both Christianity and Islam.

Philosophy and Ethics: allows students to investigate religious and personal responses to moral controversies such as peace, war, crime, human rights, euthanasia and abortion.

There are three papers taken at the end of Year 11; two one-hour exams; one for each of the two religions studied and one two-hour paper on Philosophy and Ethics.

Where can it take me?

Philosophy and Ethics is about understanding people’s cultural background and beliefs and about looking at morals and values. It provides a good background for courses and careers in the arts and social sciences, as well as social and caring work, health work and jobs in the community, such as the police.

It is an ideal foundation for employment or a place in further education.

Universities value students with Philosophy and Ethics qualifications as these students are able to analyse and evaluate a range of opinions.

GCSE Option Separate Sciences OCR A ‘Gateway’ Subject Leader: Mrs. L. Eades, Director of Faculty

Why should I study it?

For certain careers, studying Separate Sciences (Biology, Chemistry and Physics GCSEs) represents the gold standard in what is expected of a GCSE student. The greater depth of study is not only fascinating, but gives a more complete understanding of the world as seen by a Scientist and allows a much more fluent transition to A-level study and beyond.

What will I learn?

Choosing Separate Sciences as an option works by ‘topping up’ the amount of time spent in Science, from two GCSEs (in Combined Science) to three GCSEs (one each in Biology, Chemistry and Physics). Students are taught in separate groups, however, with one specialist teacher for each subject. In addition to the content on the Combined Science course, additional topics are taught: Biology: Protein Synthesis, The Eye and the Brain, Homeostasis, Biomass, Microbiology Chemistry: Nanoparticles, Transition Metals, Chemical testing, Industrial Processes Physics: Space and the Universe, Moments and Balance, Electromagnetic Machines, Optics and Colour Students sit two 1-hour 45-minute papers in each of the three subjects at the end of Year 11. There is no coursework, but students must complete practical work.

Where can it take me?

Studying Separate Sciences is the preferred route for those looking to continue to study Biology, Chemistry or Physics at A-level and then beyond at University, and especially those who may go on to ultimately work in research. This is in addition to being essential for careers in Medicine and Veterinary Medicine. Other future careers requiring A-levels in the sciences include Geology, Environmental Science, Pharmaceutical Science, Marine Biology, Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering, Genetics, Radiology, Nuclear Physics and a host of varied Engineering disciplines.
