Absences
When a pupil is absent from school, this will be classified as either ‘authorised’ or ‘unauthorised’.
The governing body and headteacher decide which absences are granted as authorised.
Authorised absences are only permitted for valid reasons, e.g.
• Illness
• Hospital appointments
• Family bereavement
Whenever possible parents should always try to arrange doctors and dental appointments during school holidays or after school hours.
If your child’s attendance falls below 90% due to illness, we will ask that you provide a doctors certificate to verify absences.
What if they are ill?
We understand sometimes children get ill. Please make sure you have contacted school by 9am to inform us.
If your child is ill but they can get up and play or watch TV then they should be at school.
Coughs and sneezes are not an excuse to miss school and tiredness is not an illness.

Unauthorised Absence
What are unauthorised absences?
Unauthorised absences are those the school does not consider to be essential or reasonable.
These can include:
• Forgetting school term dates
• Absences that are not explained
• Arriving after the register is closed
• Day trips or family outings
• Birthdays
• Holidays
There is no automatic entitlement in law to time off in school time to go on holiday. It is important you understand that leave in term time WILL NOT be agreed by us at any time unless circumstances surrounding the request can be evidenced, by parent/carers to be exceptional.
Any period of absence without agreement of the school or in excess of the agreed will be classed as unauthorised and may attract sanctions such as a penalty notice.

10 days off per year = 94.7%
Whilst 90% attendance might sound OK…
90% - 1/2 day off each week
90% = 1 month off school per year
This considerably reduces continuity of education.
