Student Name: Thomas Lewington
School Name: Nyland
Year Group: Y5
Nominated by: Paul Holroyd, Head
Sport Represented: Association Football
Achievement Description: Please see excerpt of email from parent of Thomas:
Thomas is a part of an under 10’s team with Wimms Adademy called Cavalry and has been since September 2023.
Thomas has played grass roots football since he was 4 years old, and has overcome many challenges during this time.
He began playing for another team and stayed with them until May 2023, when due to his additional needs and challenges he was facing with other parents we took him out.
He took the summer off to regulate and for us to decide if grass roots was right for Tom.
Thomas has such a passion for the sport, and biased or not - is very talented at it!
He loves playing left wing the most, as this is where he can really show off his skill. Running down the wing with the ball, past the other players at such speed and using his golden left foot to shoot is just the best confidence boost for him! Thomas has often received the parents player of the match trophy, and the coaches player too, which is so beneficial to his self esteem and self belief!
He has played in many tournaments over the years and has 2 lined up for this year! His first one is this Saturday on the pitch at Swindon Town FC which he is very excited for!
Football is Tom’s only real and consistent passion, and has been since he could kick a ball. At home, every day he will be out in the garden practising his shot using targets, and using his rebounder net to perfect his reaction and ball control - although my back fence is nearly now non existent due to him using his power as if he’s taking the final penalty for England! And this is a just when we are not at a local park again - playing football!
The sport has helped Thomas with his emotional regulation, understanding the importance of listening to instruction and since September has finally allowed him to feel a part of something, with a team that accepts him exactly for who he is - flaws and all!
We have tried many other sports over the years, but for Tom nothing compares to football, and in his own words - he has no space for anything else!
Reason For Nomination: Thomas has had to overcome many challenges and prejudices to take part in a sport he loves, the obstacles put in his way would have deterred many, yet Thomas is thriving within a team sport
