Over the summer holidays our schools become a hive of building actvity as it offers the biggest window to carry out critical maintenance, refurbishment and implement development projects. This summer has been especially busy with £3 million being invested across the trust to provide improved facilities for both staff and students to enhance the teaching and learning experience.
The large front entrance and facade to the school has had a substantial facelift over the summer, as the pictures show, providing a much more welcoming experience for everyone arriving. The visitor parking has been relocated so it is closer to the main entrance, and we’ve completed an extensive deep clean of outdoor areas.
Paul Farr Interim Executive Principal commented, "We are truly delighted with the new look to the front of our school, the colours are so much more uplifting and welcoming and make a huge a difference as you approach the main entrance. We have been inundated with positivity from staff, students and parents, who have in unison commented on how great the front of the school now looks."

The summer holidays saw work commence to extend the Reception class facilities with more breakout space, new toilet, a kitchen area and large canopy to the outdoor play area. Additionally, work has also started to provide SEND provision for 20 students from January, this includes remodelling an existing classroom and a large outdoor play area. The foundation work for both projects is now finished, with work on target for completion by the end of this year.
Work continues on the four-classroom build, to enable the school to expand to a two-form entry. The roof is complete and the building is now watertight. The programme remains on schedule for completion in November.
During the summer, eight schools had their lighting upgraded to LED. This improves the quality of lighting especially in social areas and classrooms. Over 4000 light fittings were replaced and offers a reduction of energy costs and carbon footprint by 65%. It also means all schools in the trust now have LED lighting.

“The LED lighting project demonstrates TLP's firm commitment to establishing a 'Greener' Estate. We are currently exploring exciting next steps in this journey, including solar panels, EV charging points, and rewilding areas of our grounds to support biodiversity. There will also be opportunities for staff to access EV and low emission vehicles via salary sacrifice, cycle to work schemes, and other benefits designed to support reducing the trust' carbon footprint.”

Part of the main school building has been re-purposed, moving away from an open plan approach to providing dedicated classrooms with an improved environment for both staff and pupils. We have also refurbished the boys’ toilets and relocated the staff room.
Anna Jones Headteacher commented, “Staff at Black Firs cannot thank the trust enough for the investment in the two newly configured classrooms and other works completed in the summer to help us. Even in the first few days children have told us how much they love their new rooms, how much calmer and quieter it is and how it is helping them to be ready to learn.”
This rapid project, taking just six weeks, saw extensive refurbishment of the Knutsford Academy toilets. All toilets are now cubicle based and entrance areas have been widened to ensure improved safeguarding. The project refurbished student toilets, Sixth Form toilets and staff toilets, with over 40 cubicles installed in total.
Karen Key Headteacher commented, “We are absolutely delighted with the completion of these three projects which provide a much-needed improvement to our facilities and environment. It was wonderful to see the reaction of the students and big smiles on their faces as they walked into the new extended dining room for the first time. All three projects support the ongoing growth in student numbers and our ambition to continually improve the facilities and environment for our students and staff”.
Following ongoing growth in student numbers, the dining room has been significantly extended, doubling in size so it can now accommodate 250 students at break time. In addition, an extensive covered outdoor terrace has been built providing students with an outdoor dining area.
To facilitate the move of Year 8 to the school’s Westfield Drive site there has been extensive refurbishment and remodelling, including the building of three new classrooms, an upgraded dining hall, kitchen facilities and extended car parking.
