At The Kingsway School we will care for your child and encourage them to work hard every day to be the best possible version of themselves.

Secondary school, for me, has always been much more than just five lessons a day – it is a complete learning experience. To get the best out of it, our students embrace opportunities, take risks and rise to challenges. During their last visit, Ofsted agreed “Pupils value the wider curriculum. Staff think about and add to what they provide, so that there is something for everyone”.

Achievement at school is not only about GCSE results – it is the progress made in each learning event that takes place. I want your child to believe that his, or her, potential is limitless, by developing the belief that they can always improve. Learning should be fun; it should be challenging and it should instil a life-long interest and curiosity. “Pupils are provided with the knowledge and skills to be successful. Moving to high school is an exciting step. We work hard to ensure that transition is a really positive experience for all our new Year 7 students.

join us for a Year 7 Induction Day on Thursday 6th July*, where they will experience the Kingsway day, meet key members of staff, and get to know other new students, mainly in their new form groups.

Our Transition and Careers Manager, Mrs Watson, and the wider transition team, know our local primary schools well and are very happy to talk to children and their families about any aspect of transition to Kingsway. If your child attends a school that is not one of our local primaries, they would be especially pleased to hear from you.

Parents are then invited to a Parents’ Induction Evening on 6th July*. There will be short presentations and a chance to meet your son or daughter’s new tutor, as well as the opportunity to talk afterwards or arrange a 1:1 meeting for a longer, more private conversation.

Throughout the summer term we will be talking to the Year 6 teachers of all the children joining us in September and finding out as much as we can about our new students.

Students must be at their tutor room for 8:30am prompt, following a warning bell at 8.25am. During tutor time students prepare for the day ahead and go to lessons ready to learn. On a Wednesday, a extended tutor time allows form tutors to deliver a Life skills lesson, a programme to support Personal, Social and Health Education as well as the Sex and Relationships curriculum, all of which are delivered

in a sensitive and age-appropriate manner.

We have a two-week timetable at The Kingsway School; red week and blue week. There are five lessons each day and over the fortnight, students will study a full range of subjects. A sample Year 7 timetable is shown here, below.

Attendance is a high priority at The Kingsway School. In order to ensure the best possible outcomes for all students, they need to aim for 100% attendance. All stakeholders have a responsibility for supporting and promoting excellent attendance and punctuality at school.

Every child has a right to access the education to which they are entitled and every opportunity will be used to convey to students and their parents or carers the importance of regular and punctual attendance.

Holidays You do not have the right by law to take your child on holiday during term time. As of September 2013, the Headteacher cannot grant permission for holidays taken during term time. The school closes for 70 days of holidays each academic year and we expect all parents/carers to take their family holidays whilst the school is closed.

The UK law states that regular attendance to school is a legal requirement and is essential for all students to achieve their best.

Parents/carers are responsible for ensuring their child accesses the educational opportunities available to them. By law, we have a duty of care and have to follow very strict regulations on attendance.

Research consistently shows that students with the best attendance get the best grades.

Good attendance is important because: • Statistics show a direct link between achievement and absence below 95%; • Regular attenders make better progress, both socially and academically; • Regular attenders find school routines, school work, and friendships easier to cope with; • Regular attenders find learning more satisfying; • Regular attenders are more successful in making transition from primary school.

Days off soon add up – as does the impact of ‘lost learning’, particularly when considered over five school years (Years 7- 11).

If you plan to take your child out of school for a holiday, you must inform the Headteacher in writing giving at least 15 days’ notice. If a parent takes a child on holiday during term time, the absence will be recorded as a G on the school attendance register, which is classified as unauthorised absence.

Attendance

A Fixed Penalty Notice may be issued.

Requests for absence for reasons such as compassionate leave, special family events, sporting or musical competitions, etc., should be made in the same way.

The application will be looked at on an individual basis and you will be informed by letter of the outcome. However, it is highly unusual to grant a leave of absence during term time other than for an exceptional circumstance.

Whilst 95% attendance over five school years may seem like a positive achievement, it still equates to over nine weeks of lost learning – around one quarter of a school year!

ATTENDANCE MATTERS

Every Lesson Counts!

Pastoral Team may visit your home if we are unable to make contact with you via the telephone. The school will always work to support parents/carers where attendance is a concern.

0161 428 7706 Keep us informed If your child is too ill to attend school, you should contact the school’s absence line before 8.15am on 0161 428 7706 then press 1.

Please give your child’s name, Year Group and the reason for the absence. Please state a specific reason for absence, rather than just stating ill or under the weather.

Every individual day of absence must be reported. If you fail to contact the school, the absence will be marked as unauthorised. It is important that you phone every day of absence so that we know your child will not be attending and you do not receive a text message asking for their whereabouts.

We take our safeguarding responsibility seriously. Parents/ carers will receive a text message daily where a student has not registered and no reason has been given for the absence. Calls are made on a daily basis, even where your child has been absent due to illness on previous days. We cannot assume that your child is still ill unless you have notified us.

Attendance information is also reported to parents/carers through regular letters and school reports. Where there are concerns, meetings and home visits will be made to offer support.

Medical evidence to support absence Where attendance concerns have been shared with parents/carers, medical evidence in the form of an appointment card or copy of a prescription will be required to authorise absences.

Punctuality All students are expected to arrive on time at school, ready for lessons.

Students should arrive at school at 8.25am in time for registration, which starts at 8.30am; students arriving after this time will be marked as present but arriving late (L).

Students are expected to be at their first lesson by 8.50am ready to start learning. The school gates will close at 8.50am. After that, access to school is by Student Services ONLY. Any student arriving after lessons have started at 8.50am must sign in at Student Services. The register will officially close at 9:15am.

Students arriving after this time will be marked (U), late arrival after close of the register. Any student arriving after 9.15 am without genuine reason will be marked as unauthorised late; this counts as an absence for the morning session.

We would be grateful for your support in ensuring that your child arrives on time.

A member of staff will be on duty on each site each morning, to record latecomers between 8:30am and 8:50am, the end of registration. Late students will be automatically issued with a same day Break one detention with a late pass, recording their minutes late.

Parents/carers will receive a text message informing them that their child is late.

Each morning your child will have either assembly or tutor time where important messages are shared and students are given opportunities to develop within the form and school community. Tutor time also provides a focused start to the day and gives the Form Tutor a chance to really get to know your child.

Lateness to school and lessons is disruptive. If students are persistently late we will invite parents/carers in for a meeting so that we can work together to improve the situation.

Reporting progress to parents or carers Students will be issued with a monitoring report to take home to share with their parents or carers each term. We hold an annual Parents’ Evening, which provides the opportunity to discuss your child’s progress in each subject with each of his/her subject teachers.

Following parent feedback, we are in the process of streamlining our parent communication systems: You will be able to access Class Charts for behaviour, homework and attendance information and there will also be a Parent Portal for progress reports, historical assessment data and all other additional information needed to support your child.

Class Charts As a parent or carer, you can see information on your child’s behaviour and homework. This is available via the school website and as a downloadable app. This is a live app and will keep you up to date with how well your child is meeting school expectations, and what homework is due.

Download the Class Charts app to monitor merits, demerits and detentions. Class Charts records all merits and sanctions such as demerits and detentions – it is expected that all parents should engage with this platform regularly.

Parent/carer evenings and review day Parent/carer evenings are an opportunity for parents/carers to meet with subject teachers to discuss your child’s progress.

You are welcome at any stage in the year to contact any teacher if you have any concerns or wish to discuss progress.

If You Have A Concern If you have a problem or concern, the following might be helpful – it is sometimes difficult in a large school to get the right person at the right level. For this reason, we have a system if you have a problem or concern:

• Do you have a reading list/ exemplar work?

• Are there any relevant places that we could visit at weekends that will further stimulate interest in the topics you are studying in your subject?

Contact your child’s Form Tutor if you have a general concern about your child.

Contact the Year Team for your child’s year group, if you have not been able to successfully resolve a problem, or if the issues are in more than one subject.

SUBJECT QUERY Contact your child’s specific subject teacher if you have a concern about your child’s learning in a particular subject.

If the situation is not resolved you should contact the Head of Department.

Please be aware, when contacting the school that most staff will be teaching between the hours of 8:20am and 3:00pm and often attend meetings until 4:15pm.

While staff will endeavour to answer queries from parents/ carers, it is sometimes not possible to do so until after this time.

All staff are asked to respond to queries within 48 hours and do their best to meet that expectation.

All Year 7 students follow a curriculum which provides a strong academic base for their time at Kingsway and beyond. We provide a wide breadth of subjects and each student will study: English; Mathematics; Science; a language (in the first year this will be French); Geography; History; RE; Performing Arts which will include Drama, Music and Dance; Art; Computing; Technology, including Food Technology and Resistant Materials; and PE. Furthermore, students will follow a Life Skills programme which introduces them to careers education, citizenship, sex and relationships and personal health and well-being.

Our curriculum is enriched with opportunities for students to develop problem-solving skills and

to develop their resilience. Excellent partnerships with major employers, outstanding colleges and universities mean that students are constantly being prepared for the challenges later in education.

The quality of our provision has been recognised nationally.

Kingsway is one of only a few schools to achieve the Gold Inspiring Careers Award.

Homework Homework is set via Class Charts and also recorded by the students in their planners. Students in Year 7 are expected to spend an average of 30 minutes a day on homework.

This is only guidance; students who are capable of achieving high grades should plan to spend more time on homework, including wider reading and research. Additionally,

we expect all students to read daily for a minimum of 30 minutes; this will not be monitored through school but parents are expected to check and support.

Students with special educational needs may spend less time doing homework. Our Inclusion and Diversity Department will give advice and support to students and families on this.

We encourage families to: • Check their child’s planner and Class Charts regularly for homework; • Use the school website links, e.g.

MyMaths and Google Classroom; • Contact their child’s tutor for guidance if you feel too much or too little homework is being set or done.

Alongside our high aspirations for academic success, we passionately believe in the importance of delivering education in its broadest sense. Our aim, through Enrichment activities, is to help students become rigorous, rounded and grounded.

A wealth of opportunities exists for students to learn new and exciting skills, or to continue with existing ones. We encourage every student to complete at least 10 hours of enrichment activities per year. We believe it is vital that students are able to develop all round skills and attributes which support academic excellence.

A huge range of sports are offered through the Kingsway Active programme including: badminton, trampolining, rugby, gymnastics, rounders, netball, football and cross-country. Many teams compete in local and national competitions.

Our STEM provision is particularly rich and has been recognised by the Museum of Science and Industry Award. Employers support our STEM clubs and enrichment activities including Industrial Cadets and the Go4SET competition. Jaguar maths is a popular application of mathematical skills.

In Performing Arts there are opportunities for students to hone their talents, in all three aspects (Drama, Music and Dance). These opportunities include dance clubs, ensembles, choirs and large stage productions. There is also the opportunity to undertake additional music lessons, for individuals and small groups, outside of the

curriculum through our talented peripatetic teachers.

Many students follow the Duke of Edinburgh award and we have successful companies in the Young Enterprise scheme.

High achieving students – ‘Year 7 Scholars’ We offer a variety of enhanced curriculum experiences for our Year 7 Scholars – the top 10% of high achieving students across all subjects for that term.

Year 7 students compete to be in the top 10% each term and have access to an enhanced curriculum experience. In our competitive world, extra skills and qualifications gained through an enhanced curriculum will help our students to stand out amongst all those with similar GCSE results.

Activities are wide ranging and have previously included, early entry GCSE Latin, Makaton as well as a range of STEM activities.

Student Leadership Student Leadership is an important part of the ethos at Kingsway.

Student leaders take an active role in the school and developing their peers. We aim to provide opportunities for students to develop leadership skills, empowering the partnership between students and staff; leading to a shared vision and contribution to the community they live in.

Each year there are over 150 student leadership opportunities from Head Girl and Boy and their deputies, to Council Members, House Captains, Prefects and Ambassadors.

Community Cohesion We promote the best attributes of the Kingsway School in our local and wider communities, sharing the school’s values and allowing our students to connect with the wider community, whether that is supporting Christmas concerts, taking part in Remembrance Sunday or raising money for local, national and international charities.

The K:OAR (Kingsway: Opportunity, Achievement and Respect) Agreement This agreement outlines the rights and responsibilities of students, parents and the school. A copy of the agreement is included on page 31 of this booklet. Please agree on the electronic Admission Form to indicate that you support the agreement.

KINGSWAY NON-NEGOTIABLES: 1. Be present and on time Students are expected to be in form promptly to start at 8:25am.

If students arrive after this time they must report to the school’s reception to sign in. Students who are late will be issued an Ethos demerit.

If your child is ill, please contact school before 8:15am each day of the illness.

We expect all students to attend school regularly and punctually. It is the responsibility of parents to ensure their child’s attendance to school (section 444, Education Act, 1994). The school does not authorise holidays during term time.

Leave of absence for any reason must be applied for and will only be granted if the school is satisfied that exceptional circumstances exist.

4. Have a positive attitude to learning A productive learning environment requires that students approach their lessons with a positive approach and a willingness to learn.

5. Behave responsibly and respectfully at all times Merits are awarded for good behaviours and de-merits for poor behaviours. Parents can track this via Class Charts. A ladder of consequences in lessons enables students to modify behaviour before they are removed from lessons, or other sanctions are applied.

Same Day Reflections The Same Day Reflection process (SDR) replaces after school detentions. In order for sanctions to be swift, certain and simple, all in class issues that result in C2/ C3 demerits, will be referred to the Same Day Reflection process.

The SDR process involves a 20 minute session after school where a restorative conversation between a teacher and the student takes place. The students will be asked to reflect on what happened in the lesson and discuss how similar situations can be avoided in the future.

When a SDR is issued on Class Charts, parents/carers are sent a notification.

If student fails to attend a SDR, they will not attend lessons the following day, but will follow their timetable in a different location.

Students will lose their social time and will attend the SDR that afternoon. If a student repeatedly fails to attend the rescheduled SDR, they will be placed in isolation and parents/carers will be invited into school Where students are repeatedly receiving SDRs, parents/carers will be invited into school to work with the year team to support the student.

Tutors and Tutor Groups We are very proud of the quality of our pastoral care, and the tutor group is at the heart of how we ensure students are happy, safe and ready to achieve. Each Kingsway student is a member of a tutor group of approximately 25 students. The tutor will get to know each student in their care and will be the first point of contact for parents. Tutor groups meet at the start of every day for registration and tutor time.

The Year Team The Year Team are responsible for the well-being and behaviour of Year 7 students. They will support students with their welfare and well-being, and ensure that students are able to meet the Kingsway Expectations.

We want all students to achieve and reach their potential. The Year Team are responsible for the achievement of students in the Year group, and will support students to develop an excellent attitude to learn.

Houses We have six Houses at The Kingsway School. Each student is a member of a House and students take part in inter-House activities and competitions, held throughout the academic year, which determine the winner of the House Cup. Students’ association with their House can be identified through the colours on their striped ties.

Many of our students live within walking distance of the school.

We do encourage environmentally friendly and safe walking and cycling routes to school.

Helping to keep your child safe – an appeal to parents We ask parents to please not to park on Broadway and Foxland Road at the start and end of the school day.

Cars parked here hold up the flow of traffic and make crossing the road more hazardous for students. This also causes inconvenience for our neighbours.

Yellow school buses Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) run a fleet of Yellow School Buses, which are not open to the general public and pick-up and dropoff children close to home.

Yellow School buses are reserved just for school students: anyone can use normal school buses, so they are not guaranteed a seat. All other buses are run by individual companies, who are under no obligation to collect the children from school or change the timings of collection for half days / inset days.

Concessionary and free travel – The igo card All students between the ages of 11 and 16 need an igo card if they wish to travel at the concessionary (reduced fare) rate on buses. The igo card is like an ID card and proves that the student is aged 16 or under. It must be carried on all journeys and shown to the driver before paying the fare.

Equally, bicycles stored at school are left at the owner’s risk. Parents are advised to take out appropriate insurance cover, as the school’s insurance does not cover loss or damage to bicycles.

The igo card costs £10 and can only be bought by students who live, or go to school, in Greater Manchester.

We strongly recommend students wear a correctly fitted bicycle helmet and use appropriate reflective clothing and bicycle lights when visibility is poor.

(Please note: students who are entitled to a free Scholars Travel Pass for journeys between home and school and students aged between 16 and 19 who have a Scholars Concessionary Pass, do not need an igo card for these journeys).

Cycling Cycling is good for health and for the environment. The Kingsway School encourages students who wish to cycle to school, since it improves their health and fitness and reduces traffic congestion outside the school.

However, it is vital that students who cycle to and from school do so safely. Whether your child is

Uniform is considered to be a vital part of life at The Kingsway School.

We ask you to ensure that your child adheres to all school uniform regulations, including the manner in which they wear their uniform.

The vast majority of students are always well turned out and a credit to their parents. The very small minority who give rise to problems, tend to do so in very specific areas.

To avoid misunderstanding and to maintain our high standards of appearance, the following clarification is given: • Shoes: Plain, formal, black leather shoes only. Shoes must adhere to the advice/illustrations available on our website, in the Parents section. Parents are advised that certain shops promote and market school shoes, in reality these are ‘mock’ trainer style and are not permitted. If in doubt please check with the school before purchasing.

• Trousers: Must be school approved tailored trousers – no jeans, canvas, chinos or corduroy allowed.

• Jewellery: No jewellery may be worn, this includes earrings and nose piercings. Please note we do not allow plasters over new piercings – students will be asked to remove all piercings.

• It is recommended that students wear a watch (not an expensive one). Smartwatches are NOT permitted in school.

• Would parents/guardians also note that aerosol type cans are not permitted in school. This covers deodorants and hair sprays • Make-up: NOT permitted.

Students wearing makeup will be required to remove it.

• Nail varnish and false nails (including gels and acrylics) are NOT permitted, neither are false eye lashes.

• Outerwear: Denim, leather, camouflage jackets, coats with large or unsuitable logos or lettering and HOODIES OF ANY SORT (including zipped hoodies) ARE NOT ALLOWED. • Football Club clothing: Coats, hats, scarves etc. which explicitly form part of the support for football teams are not to be worn.

• Haircuts: Hair should be kept tidy with a sensible style and length.

Extreme haircuts are not permissible, e.g. unnatural hair colour (including red) and shaved heads less than grade 2.

• As a health and safety measure, long hair should be tied back from the face during lessons where there is a potential health and safety risk, e.g. during PE and dance classes, food technology lessons or a science experiment where a Bunsen burner is used.

This applies to all students with long hair.

• Students should be provided with a suitable bag to carry their belongings. Plastic bags and handbags are not appropriate.

To minimise the cost of uniform, we would strongly recommend that nonbranded clothing is purchased from high street stores, such as Marks & Spencers, or supermarkets – this could include for example, white shirts and trousers.

Any student who is unable to wear the full school uniform on a particular day should bring a note from home. Form Tutors who will then issue a temporary uniform pass. The student needs to carry this pass with them at all times.

Class teachers should ask students to produce their pass on entry to the classroom. All staff should address students who fail to wear the correct uniform and who deliberately choose not to be part of the The Kingsway School culture. Persistent refusal to comply with the school uniform expectations will be dealt with.

Students who arrive at the school inappropriately dressed may be asked to return home to change with their parent’s/carer’s permission.

Alternatively, parents/carers may be contacted to ensure that the correct uniform is brought into the school so that the student can be dressed correctly.

In some instances, where parents/ carers meet certain criteria, we may be able to provide assistance with the cost of purchasing the uniform for your child, including the PE kit; parent/carers who are experiencing difficulties should speak to their child’s Pastoral Head of Year in the first instance, or at the point of transition into Year 7, to Transition and Careers Manager, Mrs Watson.

School meals and snacks at The Kingsway School are prepared inhouse. Menus are changed daily and we offer a choice of healthy options.

Fresh local produce and home-made dishes are always included.

Students can buy breakfast and hot drinks from the dining rooms from 8:00-8:20am.

In place of a ‘lunch hour’ we have one 25 minute and one 35 minute break in the school day. Key Stage 4 students access the canteens in Break 1, and Key Stage 3 students in Break 2. We also have a ‘Pod in the Quad’ on both campuses, which provides a range of food.

All meat used in our main courses is Halal certified with the exception of our pork and turkey products.

Vegetarian options are available daily.

Students who bring their own food are also welcome to sit with friends anywhere they wish in the dining rooms. Packed lunches must be healthy.

Students should bring in a refillable bottle for drinking water that can be filled from the school’s water fountains.

Plenty of food options are available during both breaks and we are always open to new ideas, suggestions and comments.

The Kingsway School’s healthy snack guidance states that: • Sweets cannot be brought into The Kingsway School; • One standard size snack bar or one standard size packet of crisps can be brought into the school – no family size bags, multi-packs or large chocolate bars; • Packets of biscuits, cookies, doughnuts or other packets of cake and similar products must not be brought into school; • No fizzy drinks or energy drinks should not be brought into school (many sports drinks contain 10-12 teaspoons of sugar).

• If a student is seen with items that are not permitted by the healthy snack policy, they will be confiscated and not returned.

Free School Meals can save families over £300 per year per child and can lead to other benefits. Furthermore, registering for Free School Meals will raise extra funding from central government for the school to fund valuable support for students.

Therefore we encourage all parents /carers to check if their child is entitled to Free School Meals.

Please note that if your child is currently in receipt of Free School Meals at primary, a new application MUST be made before they start at The Kingsway School. The system does not automatically transfer and if you have not completed this, there will be a break in your entitlement.

Eligibility criteria You can claim Free School Meals for a child who lives with you and who you are responsible for (eg. you receive Child Benefit for them) as long as you are in receipt of one or more of the following benefits: • Universal Credit (provided you have an annual net earned income of no more than £7,400 equivalent to £616.67 per month, as assessed by earnings from up to three of your most recent assessment periods) • Income Support • Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance • Support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999 • The guarantee element of Pension Credit • Child Tax Credit (provided you’re not also entitled to Working Tax Credit and have an annual gross income of no more than £16,190) • Working Tax Credit run-on – paid for four weeks after you stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit The school works together with local councils to confirm

The completed application will be submitted to your local council, who will notify you when it has been accepted. Once we have received notification of eligibility, your child will be added to our records and will be able to access their Free School Meal allowance from their first day in September.

We use two cashless online systems for items such as dinner money and visits. These are secure websites/apps called School Gateway (for visits and other items) and ParentPay (for dinner money), where you can pay online using your credit/debit card.

As the school office cannot accept cash, these apps are our preferred method for parents/carers to make payments to the school.

Additionally, on ParentPay, parents can track their child’s spending and food choices online.

Students pay for their food using a biometric (fingerprint imaging) system. The fingerprint images cannot be used by any other source for identification purposes. The system uses the image of the finger to create a unique number to identify students. The fingerprint image is then discarded. The unique number cannot be reinterpreted back into a fingerprint image.

What are the benefits to parents/ carers and students?

The Kingsway School is committed to Safeguarding.

Kingsway students should not bring to school any medicines or non-prescribed medicines without informing the school in advance.

We strongly discourage parents/ carers from allowing students to have medicines or non-prescribed medicines (including paracetamol) on their person, during the school day. This action safeguards against a variety of potential risks.

Medicines are only given in school where it is essential; that is where it would be detrimental to a student’s health if the medicine were not administered during the school day.

We only accept medicines that have been prescribed by a doctor, dentist, nurse practitioner or pharmacist prescriber. Medicines should always

be provided in the original container as dispensed by a pharmacist and include the prescriber’s instructions for administration and dosage.

We only administer paracetamol tablets if we obtain parent/carer permission in advance.

To eliminate the need for students to bring their own paracetamol into school, a stock of paracetamol will be kept by the school and administered by the Welfare Assistants, once parent/carer consent has been given.

If your child needs to carry an Epi-Pen or asthma inhaler, please enter this information onto the electronic Admissions Form giving brief details. The School will contact you directly to discuss this further.

Please note: Should your child fall ill at school, you will be contacted

Support for students with additional needs The Kingsway School currently provides 24 resourced places for students with learning difficulties and complex needs.

Miss M. Axon is the Resource School Manager.

Our very experienced Inclusion & Diversity Department supports students with special educational needs. Our SENCo is Miss J. Djang.

The majority of support takes place in class, with specialist staff working alongside the class teacher. A small number of students come to our Inclusion Base at specific times in the week for individual or small group work.

During the summer term of Year 6, our SENCo will liaise with primary schools to discuss children coming to The Kingsway School, who may need additional support.

EAL (English as an additional language) Many of our students and families may not have English as a first language. We have an wide range of experience in supporting all students to make progress. Our Inclusion and Diversity Department work closely with Jane Lawton from Stockport Local Authority to provide a tailored and specialist curriculum to support individuals.

We also organise early entry GCSEs for students in many languages, such as Arabic, Mandarin or Portuguese, to name a few.

Medical needs We have two Welfare Assistants in school whose job it is to look after our students’ medical needs and work very closely with our School Nurse. As well as responding to situations where a child becomes ill during the school day, our Welfare Assistants also set up Health Care Plans with parents of children with longer term medical needs. They keep and administer any prescribed medication students may need to take while in school.

If your child does have medical needs, please indicate this on the admission form and we will contact you to discuss this and organise your child’s care plan during the summer term of Year 6.

Safeguarding children and young people is the responsibility of everyone in school.

Our Designated Safeguarding Lead for Child Protection is Ms J. Woodyer and our Deputy Designated Safeguarding Leads are Mrs A. Slann and Ms E. Hulance.

Child Protection Child protection is part of the safeguarding process. It focuses on protecting individual children identified as suffering or likely to suffer significant harm. This includes child protection procedures which detail how to respond to concerns about a child.

General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) The Kingsway School understands that recording images of identifiable individuals constitutes as processing personal information, so it is done in line with data protection principles.

The Kingsway School aims to educate students in the responsible use of technology. We do not permit the use of mobile phones on school site.

Responsible use The use of mobile devices in our School is a privilege not a right.

We reserve the right to revoke this privilege at any time if you do not follow the rules relating to responsible mobile phone use.

We live in a society where almost everyone has, or is expected to have a mobile device (phone/ tablet/ smart watch). We also live in a society where we are expected to know when, where and why a device can be used and when it should be switched off. Mobile phones should be off and away at all times until you leave school. Any phones seen or heard will be confiscated.

The law is developing a harder line regarding inappropriate mobile device use. Several young men/ women have been sent to prison for threats on devices/ internet.

It is a crime to drive and use a mobile device. You can be fined for using mobile devices in “silent areas”. You have to turn them off on planes, in cinemas, in theatres, in some restaurants, in interviews, at places of work, to give just some examples of how the “real” world treats mobile devices. Facebook, Instagram and other social media activity can also be checked by your future employers to vet you for potentially embarrassing/ illegal activities. Inappropriate internet use can also lead to your instant dismissal from employment and can lead to a criminal record.

Rules • Mobile devices should be turned off and in bags at all times. Any phones seen or heard will be confiscated.

• No photographs or recordings of teachers or students to be taken without their permission.

We respectfully request that parents/carers who wish to contact their child during the school day do so through the official channel – which is to contact the main reception, and not to phone or text your child directly during school hours.

• You may not post or publish pictures, videos or audio recordings taken in school digitally, this means on social media or any other online sites.

• Any device containing inappropriate images will be confiscated and may be kept as evidence.

• Any inappropriate images, comments or campaigns on social media will be subject to school sanctions. Activities which may take place out of school, but have consequences back in school, will be dealt with by the school if appropriate/ when necessary.

• Finally: Arguments, repeat offences or defiance in relation to mobile devices/internet use will be subject to our usual school sanctions and ultimately result in the privilege of bringing a device into school being revoked.

The Kingsway School aims to educate students in the responsible use of technology.

Please indicate that you have read and agree to this Acceptable Use Agreement, by filling in the relevant section of the electronic Admission Form.

The acceptable use of the ICT network at The Kingsway School We are pleased to offer a computer network, internet and e-mail provision to all students at The Kingsway School. It is expected that all students will follow the Acceptable Use Agreement shown below. Once a fortnight, this agreement is displayed on-screen, requiring students to indicate that they have read, understood and accepted it before they are allowed to log in.

Please contact the school if you do not wish your son/daughter to accept the student Acceptable Use Agreement and use the school ICT network.

What is expected?

Students are responsible for their behaviour when using the school’s network. Misuse of the network may result in access being revoked.

The user is personally responsible for his/her actions in accessing and using the school’s computer resources. Students are advised never to keep or send anything that they would not want their parents/ carers or teachers to see. Members of staff will actively monitor the system to ensure it is being used responsibly.

What is possible?

Access to the internet will complement students’ learning, allowing them access to a large amount of online resources.

The intention of the school is to use the internet for constructive educational goals. However, students may find ways to access other materials. Parents/carers should be aware that some material accessible via the internet might contain items that are defamatory, inaccurate or potentially offensive.

To minimise the chances of this occurring, the school monitors and filters all internet activity from devices connected to the school network. We believe that the benefits to students from access to the internet in the form of information resources and opportunities for collaboration, exceed the disadvantages. As parents/carers, you are responsible for setting and conveying the standards your children should follow when using these media and information sources.

Student Acceptable Use Agreement: • I will only use ICT systems in school, including the internet, email, digital video, mobile technologies, etc. for school purposes.

• I will not download or install software on school equipment.

• I will only log on to the school network/ learning platform with my own username and password.

• I will follow the school’s ICT security system and not reveal my passwords to anyone and will change them regularly.

• I will only use my school email address at school.

• I will make sure that all ICT communications with students, teachers or others are responsible and sensible.

• I will be responsible for my behaviour when using the Internet. This includes resources I access and the language I use.

• I will not deliberately browse, download, upload or forward material that could be considered offensive or illegal.

If I accidentally come across any such material I will report it immediately to my teacher.

• I will not give out any personal information online, such as my name, phone number or address.

• I will not arrange to meet someone unless this is part of a school project approved by my teacher.

• Images of students and/or staff will only be taken, stored and used for school purposes in line with school policy and not be distributed outside the school network without the permission of a teacher.

• I will ensure that my online activity, both in school and outside school, will not cause my school, the staff, students or others distress or bring the school into disrepute.

• I will support the school’s approach to online safety and not deliberately upload or add any images, video, sounds or text that could upset or offend any member of the school community.

• I will respect the privacy and ownership of others’ work online at all times.

• I will not attempt to bypass the internet filtering system.

• I understand that all my use of the internet and other related technologies can be monitored and logged and can be made available to my teachers.

• I understand that these rules are designed to keep me safe and that if they are not followed, school sanctions will be applied and my parent/carer may be contacted.
