Quite simply, we aim to be a great school at the heart of this community

Headteacher’s Welcome

Tarleton Academy is a highly successful and thriving school with wonderful children and a fantastic staff, ready to welcome you into our family.

At our school your child will experience inspirational, challenging teaching and learning, outstanding pastoral care and a genuine belief that every child can succeed. Our overriding priority is to get to know each of our children for their own special uniqueness. Building and maintaining strong relationships with our parents is essential to this and we also take our role at the heart of the Tarleton community seriously. We are proud of our status as an above average school nationally, currently in the top 5% in Lancashire, and we will continue to provide the very best for each and every one of our children.

Alongside our outstanding academic progress, we enjoy a nurturing environment which is dedicated to developing happy, respectful and independent

children. We are extremely passionate about ensuring the successful development of each individual child. We believe that every child deserves to feel safe and well supported and to experience the joy of learning and the pride that follows their hard work and success.

One of our many strengths is our community spirit and family feel; our children are supported by a wide range of key staff, as well as being challenged to be the best they can be. Getting the right balance between academic and pastoral support is vital to us. At Tarleton, we believe that every child should be treated as we would want our own children to be. As a result, our children feel safe and valued in an environment where we get the right balance between encouragement and support and stretch and challenge.

We are delighted to welcome you and your child to our Tarleton family.

Tarleton Academy: Our Ethos and Values

At Tarleton Academy we want all members of our community to thrive in everything that they do. This is exemplified by our school values of Respect, Resilience and Aspiration. Our values shape every aspect of school life, they are embedded in our culture.

Respect

We instil in our students the importance of respecting themselves, each other, and the world around them. It is important for young people to develop empathy and understanding of the viewpoints and experience of their peers. We foster an inclusive and supportive environment where diversity is celebrated. Our students are taught the value of kindness, tolerance, and understanding.

Resilience

Resilience is a key skill for success in both academic and personal endeavours. We understand that challenges are a part of life, and we equip our students with the tools to face them head-on. Our curriculum is designed to challenge and support students at every level. We teach them to embrace mistakes as opportunities for growth and perseverance as the path to mastery. We believe that emotional well-being is as important as academic achievement, and our dedicated pastoral team are readily available to provide support to students.

Aspiration

Aspiration is the driving force behind our educational approach. We want our students to dream big, set ambitious goals, and work diligently to achieve them. We set high academic standards and provide a stimulating learning environment to inspire curiosity and a love for learning. Students are encouraged to develop their sense of self-worth and we offer all students plenty of opportunities to play a positive role in contributing to school life and within the wider community. The wealth of Post 16 opportunities are explored in depth with all students through our comprehensive Careers Guidance programme.

Pastoral Excellence

At Tarleton we make sure that every child is supported and treated as an individual. We get to know who they are and what helps them to learn and be happy. Each of our children belongs to a house and tutor group, which is their extended family in school, ensuring they feel a part of the whole school community.

Each house group is led by an enthusiastic and energetic progress leader, supported by a team of personal tutors. Each personal tutor supports, mentors and tracks the progress of their children. Twice a year we hold review days that allow the tutor and each child to meet and reflect upon their learning experience and set targets for future development.

In addition to personal tutors and the progress leaders, each year group also has a dedicated pastoral manager. The manager is specifically devoted to supporting pastoral, welfare and behaviour interventions. The Year 7 Pastoral Manager also works with parents and teachers of Year 6 pupils to ensure maximum support for transition to Tarleton.

The Year 7 Pastoral Manager is available throughout the day to speak to parents and follow up concerns as they may arise.

Quality Curriculum

All children study the core subjects of English, Mathematics, Science and Physical Education (PE) throughout their five years at Tarleton. We also have five collapsed curriculum days spread throughout the year, dedicated to Personal, Social, Health and Careers Education (PSHCE), which also includes modules of Religious Education (RE) in Year 10 and 11.

In Year 7 and 8, children also study Spanish and Humanities subjects (History, Geography and RE), Art, Computing, Design Technology, Drama, Food Technology and Music. In Year 9, students continue with Spanish and the Humanities suite of subjects.

They also have the opportunity to focus their preferences by making a choice from Art, Computing, Design Technology, Drama, Food Technology or Music or a second language. These ‘choices’ allow for an excellent ‘taster’ of these subjects, in preparation for their final options in Key Stage 4.

As children enter Key Stage 4, they have the opportunity to study either the Triple or Combined Science course as well as finalising three options from the wide range of subjects listed above. All our children have the opportunity to study the full English Baccalaureate to the end of Year 11.

New building and facilities at Tarleton Academy

Tarleton Academy is one of the first schools in England to benefit from the Department for Education’s £1 billion School Rebuilding Programme, which is due to deliver 500 projects over the next decade.

This funding enabled Tarleton Academy to deliver modern, state-of-the-art facilities for students, staff, and the wider community. This has provided staff and pupils with a significantly improved learning environment which enables everyone at the school to continue to flourish and thrive.

A team, led by Willmott Dixon Construction Ltd, has been looking at how the existing school site can be better utilised to accommodate the required buildings, sports facilities and parking.

We now have a new state-of-the-art building, including classrooms, science labs, dining space, swimming pool, hall and main hall, alongside a new Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA). We now have an extended and reconfigured car park, bike shelters and a bus turning area.

16
17

Extra-Curricular

Extra-curricular activities are an important part of school life. We have a variety of clubs and teams, including but not limited to debating, drama, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths), coding and computing.

18

Sporting Opportunities

Every child should have the opportunity for a fully rounded education. Sport and physical activity not only promote a good foundation for a healthy lifestyle, they also help with life skills such as teamwork and leadership skills. We provide an environment where children are actively encouraged to discover their talent, whilst being supported to nurture it, enjoy it and achieve in their chosen physical activity or sport.

Children benefit from our facilities which include a dedicated gymnasium and multi-purpose hall. In addition to this, we have extensive playing fields which include football and rugby pitches alongside track and field amenities and we have the enviable advantage of a swimming pool fully at our disposal on our school site.

There are lots of opportunities for children to take part in competitions across West Lancashire, with some students being selected to play their sport at regional level and beyond.

Chromebooks

As we are living in an ever-increasing digital world, we want children to be prepared for this during their time at school. Our Chromebook for Learning Project is well established. Research has confirmed that appropriate school and home access to technology has a positive impact on a child’s level of educational achievement. This often motivates them to do school work by providing other interesting and engaging ways to learn.

We have found that research, online tasks and other types of learning that do not require handwritten pieces are often better presented and engaging in a different way. In addition, independent learning skills and self confidence can grow and they can explore subjects that interest them in their own time.

WHY CHROMEBOOKS?

Chromebooks are extremely secure, easy to use and facilitate both independent study and online collaboration. Through the use of Google apps for education, we can further improve child engagement and open the door to learning. The Chromebooks with the management console

ensure that all children are able to access all of the same resources and applications, wherever they are in the world and enable teachers to deliver the curriculum in the most exciting and engaging way.
