Tarleton Academy’s English Department WELCOME! What’s new for September 2019? Located in the Aisling building, our ‘Reading Hub’ as been developed for September as a new comfortable and quiet space to sit and read during lunchtimes! With an array of exciting new books, students will have the opportunity to loan books to continue reading at home. Launching 24th September, more information and pictures to follow on our website. We also welcome Mr Curtis to our department who will be teaching English is A5!

What will students be studying? Year 7 Half term 1: Magazines In this unit, students will have the opportunity to develop their skills in writing for an audience, conducting research, using effective language techniques and will create their own magazine front cover, film review and article! Year 8 Half term 1: Poetry from other cultures In this unit, students will be developing their reading skills through studying a range of poems from poets from other cultures. As well as opening up discussions about our own culture, and looking at the perspectives of others, students will develop their analysis of language and structure and ability to write about poetry analytically. Year 9: Half Term 1: Poetry In this unit, students will be introduced to significant movements/genres of poetry and study how word choices and poetic devices convey writers’ ideas and viewpoints. Some of the themes include war, politics and relationships and the scheme is designed to give students the tools to analyse poetry at GCSE level whilst engaging them in provocative and engaging poetry. Year 10: Unseen Poetry Students will be developing their ability to approach an unseen poem and analyse the language, structure and meaning. The unit aims to encourage students to have their own personal response to the poems that they can write about in a thoughtful and analytical way. Year 11: An Inspector Calls Students will be studying the play’s themes, characters and context for their Literature Exam. During this unit, they will be immersed into analysis and discussion of class division, capitalism/communism, social responsibility and much more, whilst continuing to develop their analytical essay writing skills.

Extra-Curricular Clubs on offer this half term… Film Club Wednesday lunchtime in A2 with Miss Pilling. Watch whole films/sections of films that have been adapted from successful/well-known books. English Revision Lectures Year 11 ONLY Wednesday lunchtime in A5 with Mr Curtis Lectures on English Language and Literature revision. Big Book Quiz Thursday lunchtime in A6 with Mrs Montague. Students will join quiz teams to compete in a regional competition on selected books– an exciting opportunity to read the latest books! Debating Club Location and time TBC An opportunity to debate hot topics and take part in debating competitions outside of school!
