Structure of the Tests All children will be familiar with these types of tests as we will be practising past papers, and will continue to do so until SATs week. Reading The children will be assessed through the use of two comprehension style papers in which your child must read passages of text and answer questions based on it. The questions may be multiple choice, sequencing activities or require a written answer in the form of a sentence. Test 1 should take around 30 minutes to complete. Test 2 should take around 40 minutes to complete. Writing Children do not take a writing test. Writing is assessed throughout the year and a level which best represents the children’s day-to-day ability is given. SPAG (Spelling, Punctuation & Grammar) This test is optional and not a government requirement. As with the writing a level which best fits the children’s everyday work will be awarded. Maths The papers will be read to all the children so that their maths ability can be assessed. Paper 1 is an arithmetic test, which should take approximately 20 minutes to complete. Children are only allowed a pencil and a ruler, they are not allowed a 100 square to help them. Paper 2 is a reasoning test, which should take approximately 35 minutes to complete. Children are allowed a pencil, ruler and mirror. They are not allowed access to any other mathematical equipment.
