In fact, we urge you to contact us at any me during the next five years if you or your child has a problem. Please bear in mind that no problem is too small.

ANewChallengeforPupils

St. Peter’s is wai ng to offer your child many new opportuni es: a wide range of subjects, friends from other primary schools, different teachers and varied approaches to learning.

Already, Mr Santus and your child’s primary school have been working together to introduce them to St. Peter’s. There have been many mee ngs and discussions held to make sure we are ge ng to know and understand the pupils who are joining us.

This will ensure that the transi on your child has had will have been no different to that of previous years. We think this is really important in giving this year’s Y6 the confidence to start high school in September with as li le anxiety as possible.

ANewChallengeforParents

As parents you are in the best posi on to know how your child is se ling into St. Peter’s. Reassure them that, although it will be strange at first, they will soon find their way around and their new teachers will be just as suppor ve as those in primary school. Friends from their primary school will be there, some in their own class. Remind them also of the opportuni es they will have to make new friends, join in new ac vi es and learn new skills.

You are the only one to see the whole process. Encourage them to talk about the move and how they really feel.

If there are any problems PLEASE DO NOT HESITATE TO CONTACT US.

St.Peter’sCodeofConduct

The Code of Conduct is based on the principle that all pupils and adults at St. Peter's will be valued equally and treated with respect. The Code is divided into three sec ons:

1. We should all, pupils and adults, show respect and considera on for each other. Thus:

a. When talking to each other, we should show respect for each other as individuals

b. We should show respect for other people's property and that of our community, inside and outside school

c. Bullying in any form breaks our Code of Conduct and is totally unacceptable. The school has a clear policy on this ma er.

2. We should make sure that classrooms are places of learning and that lessons run smoothly. Therefore we ask pupils to:

a. Be punctual to school and to lessons.

b. Be organised, always have a pen, pencil, rubber and ruler.

c. Respect those who are learning with you.

d. Listen carefully to others when you are asked to do so and follow instruc ons carefully.

e. Make sure that you always work to the best of your ability.

f. Hand in your homework on me.

g. Treat others as you would wish to be treated yourself.

3. We have a responsibility to ensure that St Peter's is a safe and healthy environment.

a. Be aware that things which are dangerous are not allowed in school.

b. Be responsible members of the community; eat only in the designated areas and put your li er in the bins provided.

c. Walk instead of running - it is safer for everyone.

d. Make sure that you know the fire drill.

e. Take care of the building, its classrooms, corridors and toilets.

f. Respect and care for the grounds, trees and plants that surround the building.

We have an a rac ve, safe healthy environment in which to work. Let us try to keep it that way.

GeneralInformation

Absence

Legisla on demands that absences are recorded as authorised or unauthorised and that this informa on should be published. For this reason, if a pupil is absent from school, we do ask that parents contact us via Edu Link as soon as possible, on the first day of the absence explaining the reason and then every day for an update.

Visits to the doctor, den st, clinic etc should be arranged out of school me as far as possible.

The law now states that parents do not have the right to take their child out of school for holidays during term me. In excep onal circumstances the Headteacher may authorise a period of leave up to 10 days in any school year. Other than for leave granted at the Headteacher's discre on, any holidays will be recorded as an unauthorised absence. If you require further informa on the leaflet "Term -Time Holiday" is available from Wigan Educa on Welfare Service.

Punctuality

Pupils should be in school by 8.55am ready to start morning registra on at 9.00am. Registers are taken from 9.00 - 9.05am.

We feel that punctuality is very important. Pupils should be prompt at the start of the day and to each lesson so they gain maximum benefit from the educa onal experiences offered at St Peter's.

Lost Property

The school cannot accept responsibility for the loss of private property. To iden fy ownership we request that all items be clearly and permanently marked with the pupil's name. Items of value MUST NOT be brought into school.

EDULINKONE

We encourage the use of the EDULINK ONE app and website. We strongly believe that this has greatly helped home-school communica on.

As a parent EDULINK ONE can be used to;

• See your child’s metable

• Report absence

• Update contact details without needing to contact school directly.

• Receive electronic forms/le ers that can be returned with the click of a bu on.

• Receive updates on your child’s behaviour and achievements.

• View and receive your child’s latest reports.

• Monitor their a endance in individual subjects.

• View the homework that has been set for your child/children and date that this is due in.

• Receive all your child’s exam informa on including entries, mes and seat numbers.

• Book appointments for parents’ evening.

• See what extra-curricular ac vi es and clubs are available to your child with informa on that includes loca on and me to encourage par cipa on.

• Link to SCOPAY to pay for events/trips or add money to your child’s dinner account.

If you have access to or own a smart phone EDULINK ONE has an app that can be downloaded via the app page. However, if you do not have a smart phone but have access to the internet, EDULINK ONE can be accessed via the log-in page. For those who do not have access to either a smart phone or internet a text message will be sent to the mobile contact details that we have in school.

Homework

Homework is an important feature of life at St. Peter's. It is set by teachers to give pupils a chance to work on their own, prac sing skills learned in class or developing research skills by doing topic work. Learning/revision homework is also set. We believe that independent learning skills are a very important part of being a successful learner

Details of the type of homework to be set for each subject and the approximate amount of me it should take to complete will be sent via EDULINK. With this in mind, please ensure that you and your child have acvated an account with EDULINK. There are separate accounts for students and parents/carers so both need to be ac vated.

(Passwords will be provided in September)

HELPFUL ADVICE

(This is the advice that we will be giving to your son/daughter)

1. Instruc ons will be provided via EDULINK.

2. Pupils should make sure that they take the correct books or other materials home with them.

3. Homework should be done as soon as possible (before watching television and before going out etc.).

4. Homework should be completed when it is set and not be allowed to pile up, or le un l the night before it is due.

5. Homework should not be rushed.

6. Homework should be completed and handed in on me.

7. We encourage pupils who have been absent to try to complete homework tasks where they are able to.

8. Ask the teacher who set the homework task for help if necessary.

9. All pupils are provided with an Independent Learning Book and are asked to bring that to school every day.

10. On nights when there is no specific homework set, we encourage pupils to do some independent learning to recap work they have done in class. This helps to counteract the tendency to forget informa on which has been learnt some me ago. There are a wide range of online pla orms available for this type of spaced prac ce. Pupils should use the online pla orms and make notes, mind maps or knowledge organisers in their Independent Learning Books. Teachers will give merits for any work that is done independently at home.

You can tell your Form Tutor, Head of Year, one of the Designated Persons or any other adult that you trust, today. All visitors to school should wear ID badges. HolidaysinTermTime

With the cost of holidays soaring, and many families on ever ghter budgets, the tempta on of term me holidays booked at off peak prices, is indeed alluring. Many parents and carers want to treat their children to a family holiday but, unable to afford to do so during peak season, instead book their holiday during term me, o en resul ng in an unauthorised absence and a disrup on to your child's learning.

What does the law say?

The Educa on (Pupil Registra on) (England) Regula ons 2006, as amended, enable Headteachers to grant leave in 'excep onal' circumstances only. This does not include family holidays. Taking children out of school for family holidays will not be authorised and the Local Authority has the ability to fine parents for an unauthorised absence. Penalty charges are £160 if paid within 28 days reducing to £80 if paid within 21 days per parent/carer per child.

Excep

onal Circumstances

Many parents ask what excep onal circumstances are. These could include; the bereavement or serious illness of a close rela ve, to a end a family funeral, where an absence is recommended by a health professional as part of rehabilita on for a health or emo onal issue for the child or parent, for religious observance or if a parent/carer is in the armed forces and returning from opera ons. If you think you may have 'excep onal' circumstances you would need to complete a Leave of Absence form sta ng the reason, this will then be discussed between the Headteacher and school governors prior to a decision being made as to whether to grant leave. Where a leave of absence is granted, the Headteacher will determine the number of days a pupil can be away from school. A leave of absence is granted en rely at the Headteacher's discre on. It is not the decision of the parent/carer.

What happens if you ignore the rules and take your children out of school?

Headteachers have to report absence (authorised and unauthorised) to the Local Educa on Authority. If there is con nued unauthorised absence, the school may issue a No ce to Improve, failure to improve school a endance following this may lead to an Educa on Penalty No ce (EPN) being issued or further legal ac on.

Further Informa on can be found here: Consequences of not a ending school

We insist on high standards of dress at St. Peter's and ask for parents' support in applying our school uniform policy. We believe that it helps to maintain the high standards of behaviour and achievement that we strive for. We also believe that having high standards of dress helps to keep to a minimum the number of incidents of bullying. Evidence shows that bullying can o en begin with teasing over a young person's appearance and so we strongly believe that maintaining high standards of dress makes our pupils much less likely to experience bullying.

The following guidance is intended to provide informa on for parents about the school uniform. CareersEducationInformation AdviceandGuidance

St. Peter's Catholic High School we recognise that an effec ve careers programme can help prepare pupils for the opportuni es, responsibili es and experiences that lie ahead.

In addi on to the careers educa on and guidance delivered by staff and external careers advisers, we run careers events throughout the year that involve representa ves from businesses and other organisa ons coming into school to work with our pupils.

We are constantly looking for opportuni es to develop further links with employers and would like to hear from parents who could contribute to our programme. Contact with employers is of huge benefit to our pupils as they prepare for their future and is o en welcomed by organisa ons wishing to build links with young people in the community.

We have regular lunch- me drop-in sessions which are industry led and are open to all Year groups enabling young people to meet employers, ask quesons and explore their poten al career of choice in more detail.

Later in the year we have a Mock Interview evening for Year 11 pupils, where the pupils are matched to an interviewer from that industry. This enables the pupil not only to experience an interview with an unfamiliar person but also the pupils learn from the interviewer and can ask ques ons about what they are thinking for their future. We hold a large annual Careers Fair for all pupils where employers, colleges and universi es a end and provide our pupils with guidance and advice about their choices for the future.

If you feel that you, or your organisa on would be able to contribute to any of these events, or to other areas of our careers programme, please email maloneyn@saintpetershigh.wigan.sch.uk or telephone on 01942 747693.

From Sept 2025 we have been asked to obtain annually £10.00 per child as a contribu on towards the Fund. Contribu ons are requested through SCOPAY (the school's online payment facility). Payment can be made in September once your child's SCOPAY account is ac ve.

FoodCashlessSystem

When a pupil purchases items from one of the dining halls they choose and collect their items in the usual way and then proceed to the ll. At this point they simply place their finger onto a reader or type in a pin number. The so ware will recognise the pupil and automa cally deduct the value of the items from their food account.Food accounts can be topped up online using the SCOPAY system.

Y7 Parents will not be able to top up their child's SCOPAY food account un l we have set these pupils up on to our system. We usually do this at their induc on day in July or on their first day of school in September. Once we have done that we will let parents know how they register for SCOPAY.

Important Note: Pupils can check their food balance on readers located near both dining halls. Parents should check their child's SCOPAY food account balance regularly (ideally avoiding last minute top ups). Parents can top up their child's SCOPAY food account at home using a debit /credit card. The same account can also be used to pay for school trips, events and make contribu ons to school.

Spending Limits: To ensure pupils cannot spend all the money on their account in a single day, there is a maximum daily spend limit of £7.00.

DiningHallCashlessSystem

What if a pupil does not hold sufficient balance to pay for a school din‐ner?

There is no overdra facility on our system, so pupils MUST have sufficient money on their account to be able to purchase food at school.

Pupils en tled to Free School Meals

Pupils en tled to Free School Meals will have their SCOPAY food account automa cally credited every day with a Free School Meal allowance. This is currently £2.80 per day. This amount usually increases every September so is subject to change. If a pupil is absent or underspends, this credit is reset to zero at the end of every day. Parents can opt to add addi onal funds to their child’s food account which will allow them to purchase addi onal items if they wish.

Do I need to top up my child’s SCOPAY food account every day?

Ideally no, just like a pay as you go account, you can choose to top up as much or as li le as you want. There is a minimum top-up of £5.00. As the balance decreases, addi onal money can be added to your child’s account.

Op ng out

You can choose to opt-out of the biometric system. If so, your child will be issued with a numeric pin number, which they will use at the ll to purchase items from the dining hall. It is the responsibility of the pupil to keep their pin number safe. 4) To prepare young people for life beyond school

Our School will do this through a systematic approach to identifying and providing for all students who have a special educational need, disability or other additional need.
