CHINESE NEW YEAR Our topic for English (Communication and Interaction) will be focused on Chinese New Year.

DRAGONS IN THE CITY STORY If you have any Chinese themed decorations or food or fabric or spices such as; Chinese 5 spice and ginger, these can be used act a sensory props for the story.

There is also a Chinese new year photo pack in your resources folder to use.

You could even make your own Chinese Dragon (instructions in resource pack) to use as a sensory prop for the story.

I’d recommend printing off 2 of the communications boards that accompany this story and cut one up into individual symbols. Show these to your young person at the relevant points in the story this will be teaching them about the main points in the story and Chinese culture.

COMPREHENSION Using the Dragons in the city communication boards, ask your young person questions about the story using the Talk Cards in your resources pack. Check back through the story to see if the answers are correct. On the Talk Cards you will find stars I the top right corner, this will give you an idea of the different level or difficultness of the questions. It will also show you the progress in understanding of the story the more times you read it together. In school we would read the story in 3 different sessions before starting the comprehension questions.

Hare was very excited because he had just got a new kimono.

Squirrel said that Hare looked silly. ‘Hmmm,’ thought Hare.

Wild Cat said that the kimono would get torn when Hare started jumping. ‘Hmmm,’ thought Hare.

Bear said that the kimono would be better as a tablecloth. ‘Hmmm,’ thought Hare.

Hare sat sadly by the waterfall and thought about his lovely, new kimono.

Golden Eagle flew past and said that proper hares did not wear kimonos. ‘Hmmm,’ thought Hare.

Highland Cow said that the other hares would laugh. ‘Hmmm,’ thought Hare.

Finally, Stag said that life was too short to worry about what other people thought of you. ‘Good,’ thought Hare.

Hare was proud of being himself. He took a deep breath in and then blew out all of his worries.

The magical noise made everyone fall asleep.

After his busy and exciting day, Hare decided to sit quietly. He looked at one of the flowers on his kimono.

Approximately 20 minutes but this can be flexible, according to age.

Session to happen on a carpeted floor or mats, with enough Preparation space to stretch out arms and legs. If possible, have some animal-themed toys or pictures to promote discussion.

This pose will stretch your hips. Lift your hips higher if it feels uncomfortable at any point.

1. Stand up tall, with a little space between your feet and your toes pointing out.

2. Slide your hands down your legs and bend your knees.

3. Sink your hips towards the floor.

4. Place your palms on the floor and make your back tall.

5. Now press into your feet to come back to standing.

6. Repeat this pose if you would like to.

This pose will help your back to become more flexible. If it feels uncomfortable, move the back of your waist less.

1. Start on all fours, with your knees under your hips and hands under your shoulders.

2. Arch the back of your waist up to the ceiling.

3. Then, dip the back of your waist towards the floor.

4. Breathe in as you move your waist one way

and breathe out as you move your waist the other way. Remember to breathe smoothly.

5. Keep moving smoothly as you arch and dip your waist.

6. Repeat this a few times as you imagine being a wild cat.

This pose will turn you upside down. Bend your knees as much as you need to. Come down if it feels uncomfortable at any point.

1. Start on all fours.

2. Slide your hips back towards your heels and press down with your hands and feet to lift your hips up.

3. Lift your hips towards the sun.

4. Bring your knees back on to the floor.

5. Rest your head down like a sleepy bear.

6. When your breathing is relaxed again, come back to all fours.

This pose gently bends your spine back. Keep your knees a little bent and, if it feels better, make the movement smaller.

1. Stand steady.

2. Lift your hands gently over your head.

3. Lift your tummy and bend back a little.

4. Check how you feel and then bend back a little more if it feels good.

5. Imagine the waterfall can flow over your head, leaving you feeling calm and alert.

6. With bent knees, bring your body back to standing with hands by your side.

This pose will help you to balance. Put a hand on a chair or the wall to help keep you steady. Bring your feet back on to the floor anytime you need to.

Remember, make sure not to touch anyone.

1. Start by standing.

2. Wrap your right leg over your left leg.

3. Wrap your right arm over your left arm.

4. Bend your knees slightly and stay steady.

5. Now, unwrap your arms and spread them wide like wings - this golden eagle wants to fly!

6. Now, unwrap your legs and come back to standing with both feet on the floor.

This pose will let your back fold forwards. Make sure your knees are slightly bent at all times. Bend your knees more to make it feel easier.

1. Start by standing.

2. Take one foot forwards and bend both knees slightly.

3. Rest both hands on your front leg.

4. Slide your hands down to wherever is comfortable for you.

5. Imagine you have big horns and a rounded hairy back.

6. Press into both feet to uncurl and come back to standing.

This pose twists your back, your tummy and your shoulders. Move gently and smoothly. If it feels uncomfortable, twist less.

1. Start by sitting.

2. Take one leg straight out in front. Bring the other foot in to your thigh so that your knee falls open.

3. Lift your hands up to look like majestic antlers.

Make them strong, powerful and graceful.

4. Lift your tummy and then smoothly turn your shoulders round to one side.

5. Come back to the centre and lengthen up.

6. Now, turn smoothly over to the other side.

This was Bo’s favourite time of year. Everyone was here! Mum, Dad, Bo, Leo, Gran, Cousin Evie, Uncle Charlie, Auntie Mei and Uncle Jian were all squeezed around the table.

All of Bo’s family had gathered together for a reunion dinner. They were celebrating a very special and exciting occasion…

Chinese New Year!

After dinner, Auntie Mei showed Bo and Evie how to make boiled dumplings. The girls loved getting their hands all sticky in the mixture.

They finished boiling the dumplings just in time for the fireworks.

Uncle Jian and Mum wished each other a happy New Year in Mandarin Chinese.

“I can’t believe we got to stay up until midnight!” exclaimed Bo as she nibbled on a dumpling.

“How do I say that?” Evie asked Bo.

“You say it like this: Sheen nian kwai luh,” said Bo.

“Xīn nián kuài lè!” everyone shouted happily.

Bo and Evie gazed through the windows at the bright, colourful patterns exploding in the night sky.

The next morning, Bo and Evie woke up full of excitement. When they got downstairs, they were each given some lucky red envelopes with money inside.

“Thank you!” they both said with huge smiles on their faces.

“Now go and get dressed while I make breakfast,” said Dad. “We can leave for the parade as soon as you’re ready!”

Soon, the family had arrived in the hustle and bustle of the festival. The noise of the crowd filled the air and the streets were bright with colour.

As they walked past the food stalls, Evie couldn’t believe her eyes. “There’s just so much to choose from!”

“The best part is the dragon,” said Bo excitedly.

“Just wait until you see it!”

Evie bought some delicious sweets and shared them with Bo as they looked around at the red and gold decorations.

Walking through the crowd, Evie noticed someone holding a paper dragon on wooden sticks. “Is that the dragon?” she asked hopefully.

“No,” Bo explained, “that’s not the dragon we’re looking for – but those ones are good fun!”

Uncle Jian passed some money to the woman behind the stall and took two of the paper dragons.

“Here, you can have one each,” he said with a smile, as he handed them to Bo and Evie.

Bo pulled Evie further down the busy street and then suddenly, they heard a loud banging on a drum.

Coming towards them through the crowd was a multicoloured animal with big eyes and a huge mouth.

“That must be the dragon!” shouted Evie over the noise of the drums.

“No,” explained Bo, “those are the lion dancers. They’re amazing!”

“What a show!” said Gran. “What next?”

“Shall we go and find the Blue Dragon?”

Mum asked, pointing down a narrow street.

Evie’s face lit up. ‘Finally, we get to see the dragon!’ she thought.

“The Blue Dragon is our favourite restaurant,” explained Bo. “You should try the pork buns, they’re yummy.”

Once everyone had eaten, Mum passed them all a piece of paper. “It’s time to write your wishes for the wishing tree,” she said.

“Make sure it’s a good one,” Bo whispered to Evie.

“It might come true!”

“Where next?” asked Uncle Charlie.

“We need to find a good spot for Bo’s favourite part of the day,” replied Dad.

Everyone hung their wishes on the wishing tree, feeling hopeful about what the year would bring.

The family found a space amongst the hundreds of excited people.

“Look!” shouted Dad. “There it is!”

Evie turned around and saw the most enormous,

While they were waiting, Evie and Bo listened eagerly as Uncle Jian told the story of the Chinese zodiac.

Light and Heavy Treasure Basket You will need:

• A large stone/rock • Peacock feather • A small, coloured feather • Weight for balancing scales • A large hardback book • Sheet of coloured tissue • An interesting paperweight • Bright scarf • Pot of bubbles and bubble wand • Bowls/boules ball • Selection of leaves • Full (sealed) can of food • A basket or container (large enough to store the contents in)

Body Percussion Rainstorm This great body percussion activity is perfect for children of all ages and it really does sound like a rainstorm. It works best with a group of five or more people. The sounds start off very quietly and build up to a noisy storm. Then, as the storm passes, the volume goes back down from loud to quiet.

1. Rub hands together.

2. Click fingers.

3. Pat thighs softly.

4. Pat thighs louder.

5. Clap softly.

6. Clap louder.

7. During loud clapping, make thunder sounds vocally (booms, rumbles, etc.).

8. Clap softly.

9. Pat thighs loudly.

10. Pat thighs softer.

11. Click fingers.

12. Rub hands together.

There are no specific timings - just go with the flow of the activity.

Give time for all the children to hear the changes in sounds as the storm gets louder or quieter.

It also works best when the leader moves to the next action but doesn’t announce it. This allows for a smooth and slow transition to the next storm sound and sounds much more natural. visit twinkl.com
