Year 5 – Spring 1 Homework Wow! Year 5 you have surpassed yourselves! We loved seeing your amazing creativity in last half term’s homework. We were bowled over by your fantastic efforts and the standard of your projects that you handed in was just incredible! Be sure to look on the class blogs for celebratory photos of your work. Here is the homework for this half term: READING – Your child should read independently EVERY night for a minimum of 15 minutes. Please also encourage them to choose a suitable question (see reading journal) to answer about their book, noting the answer in their reading journal or discussing it with them. At St John’s we use the AR reading programme to ensure your child is reading books that suitably challenge them. The class teacher will check the books suitability for your child. (Please read the notes within your child’s reading journal for further guidance.) Children should bring their reading journal in school every day. SPELLING – Each Friday there will be a spelling test using the weekly spellings below. MATHS - Online ‘My Maths’ tasks to complete over the term. Multiplication and division facts for all times tables. (Listed at back of reading/homework journal) HOMEWORK PROJECT – See below the activities that make up this half term’s homework project. Please complete 4 activities altogether. We are going to be studying Lord Tennyson’s poem ‘The Lady of Shalott’ so the activities are based around this. The activities can be done in any order. They need to be completed and handed in on or before Friday 8th February 2019 . On this date, the children will have the chance to display and share their work with their teachers and peers. This will be a wonderful day – we are looking forward to celebrating hard work and rewarding success.

Imagine Christ has come again today. What would you say to him when you meet him? Write a blog entry/letter showing how the words of scripture and Christian belief have been fulfilled. Tell Jesus how Christians have tried to prepare themselves to meet him during Advent and how following his example has shaped their lives.
2. Our next topic in Religion will be ‘Mission/Local Church in our Community. The Church’s celebrations are community occasions. On Sundays, the parish family gathers together. It is a time to remember how much there is to celebrate; a time to say thank you; a time to know that God’s love is offered and made visible here and now in Jesus and in people. Create a poster/information leaflet about St John’s Church, giving details of times when the community comes together to celebrate together. You could include photos of your own celebrations, such as Baptism, Holy Communion Day; Christmas Fair visits etc. Book focus – Our next class book will be ‘The Lady of Shalott’ by Alfred Lloyd Tennyson – Choose at least two
Create a piece of art/model depicting your favourite scene from the poem – use the medium of your choice. Write a letter from the Lady of Shalott to the nobleman explaining why you are locked in the tower. Have a go at weaving – perhaps you could use wool/paper. How creative can you be? Write a poem: either by the Lady of Shallot from her grave or the nobleman after her death.
