YOU SAID WE DID

Marylin Monroe

This name would usually be associated with Hollywood glamour and the nickname ‘blonde bombshell’, however a side of Marilyn that isn't talked about is her support on civil and women rights. She wasn't just involved in civil rights but rather a ‘radical’ supporter, meaning she was extremely passionate about ongoing issues women and minorities faced during this time period She fought not only for her own rights, but the rights of others too. She was not scared to be friends with minorities and people considered to be different. A reporter reminisces “She broke the mould and challenged the authoritarian structure of Hollywood studios, which dictated what films their stars would make” She influenced many other women of the time by being the 2nd ever US woman to own a production company, a stereotypical male job role at the time. This would have helped inspire lots of women to pursue their dreams especially if that dream was in a male dominated industry

This actress is usually just known for her role of Hermione in Harry Potter, but she uses her fame to put a spotlight on the ongoing issues between men and women. Emma previously declared the definition of feminism as “the belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities. It is the theory of the political, economic and social equality of the sexes”. She was appointed UN Women Goodwill ambassador in July 2014 and has championed the women's “HeForShe” campaign, inviting men and boys to step forward, to be seen to speak up, to be the ‘he’ for the ‘she’. She was one of the first very famous young women to make the case that feminism is good for men too.

"Both men and women should feel free to be sensitive. Both men and women should feel free to be strong."

This is one of Emma’s most popular and empowering quotes. Some could say that she has always been empowering women by default since her role as the brilliant, inspiring Hermione in Harry Potter.

An interview with Mr Green.

We went to interview Mr Green, asking him about his interests, Science and why Teaching at St Georges, these were his answers.

Q: How long have you been teaching for?

A: It’ll be coming up to my 5th year in teaching soon, so I’d say 5 years.

Q: Why Science?

A: I was always really interested as I had a good science teacher, so I went on to do it in University and College then become a science teacher.

Q: Currently, what is your favourite Science subject, Chemistry, Biology or Physics?

A: Physics because my science teacher taught physics, part of the reason I started liking science in the first place.

Q: If you could have gone into a different career/ career path, what would it have been?

A: Farming, I do it with my step-dad during the half terms, it’s fun to do, my wife also owns a farm shop, hence the farming interest ”

Q: I’ve heard you play Lacrosse, why Lacrosse?

A: I started to do Lacrosse as it was a sport I had never played before and that it was an opportunity to get into something new

Q: Why a Lacrosse elective?

A: Interested in the sport, it could give an opportunity for those to try out a new sport like I did, plus, not that many people play it, and St Georges is probably one of the only schools in Wyre and the Fylde Coast, which makes having a Lacrosse elective even better.

Q: What do you enjoy the most about teaching at St Georges.

A: Everyday is to the other, never boring, teaching different things a day and not every day is the same

LGBTQ+ URPotential Charity (Ft. Alan Turing)

During February, it is recognised to be LGBTQ+ history month, which is a time to raise awareness of queer history from the past in order to see the growth from the past all the way up to the present. URPotential is a non-profit organisation whose goal is to provide lots of support opportunities for LGBTQ+ individuals that are children, young people and families. We raised money by selling enamel pins. In total, we have managed to raise £141 in total towards the charity, which is a huge achievement that St George’s is extremely proud of The photo provided are three people who are part of our diversity club, who helped to organise this event. If you are interested in contributing to events like these, the elective is held every Monday after school.

The diversity elective is intending on raising more charity events in future, and this is only the first project which they have initiated They all collectively cannot wait to plan more events for charity in the future.

A significant figure worth mentioning for LGBTQ+ history month is Alan Turing. He is acknowledged as one of the most innovative thinkers of the 20th century, and died from chemical castration as a criminal after conviction of being a homosexual. Only in 2009 did the government apologise for his treatment He is associated with many people during wartime operations of Britain’s code-breakers, particularly the infamous Enigma Code which contributed towards ending WW II earlier than originally envisaged.

Sporting Round Up

St. George's Sporting Round-Up! 32 pupils represented St George's at the Blackpool Schools Indoor Athletics Championships; an exciting competition of running, jumping and throwing events. Team SG were outstanding, producing our best results EVER in this competition! For the first time we have two teams going forward to the Lancashire event; our Year 7 girls and Year 8 boys teams were crowned the Blackpool Champions, with the Year 7 boys finishing runners up, just missing out by 2 points. The Year 8 girls finished 5th. Not only was this another impressive sporting performance by our excellent students, but also a demonstration of their high standards in effort and behaviour, making the team managers Mr McGuinness and Miss Mainey very proud.

Check out Polly and Billy, our very own Year 7 superstars who competed in the National Cross Country event in Chester last month! Polly crushed it, finishing 5th out of over 200 runners in her race, and Billy did fantastically well in a strong field of nearly 300 runners. Amazing performances from both athletes competing on a national stage, and we're so proud of their hard work and dedication

Everyone performed exceptionally while sitting in the sports hall doing their exam showcasing our SG ways and upholding our high standards along with OUR DNA, which were reflected in their results in which students should have been given their exams paper back in the past week, this week or when we come back after the easter holidays. The year 10s literature paper 1 was on the 19th century novella A Christmas Carol and also our Shakespeare play Macbeth. Our paper 2 exam was on the war torn allegory Lord of the Flies, along with 15 poems which are from our anthologies learnt in class, unseen poetry and also a unseen poetry comparison.

All pupils did amazingly on their mock exams and we are looking forward to sitting our exam in may and getting our results back on results day.

UCLAN/iMedia Trip

On the 2nd of February 2023, Selected Year 9s were invited to go on a trip to UCLan. As someone who went on this trip, I found the experience to be incredible! We had to make our own plan on an Adventure Video Game, and made our own characters, map, plot and even price which all pupils found to be fun and engaging. After eating lunch, we were separated into 2 groups and were given a Tour around the campus, including the library, art/ design building, mechanics, the forensics investigation buildings and even the sports centre. In the end, we all met up again and took a picture by the main building. Each building had more to share than the one before it, and the tour guide was very good as well. Overall it was a very enjoyable experience, one that is beneficial to all pupils with an interest in iMedia and Design

Book Reviews

Noughts and Crosses

Noughts and Crosses is a controversial love story written by Malorie Blackman which tells the story of two teenagers who are worlds apart in some many ways, but their destiny is meant to be It tells the story of a reversed history where the black crosses rule over the white noughts and it focuses on the tale of two people who, against all odds, fall in love with each other. But, will it end in tragedy or love?

It not only tells the fictional love story, but it also explores the very serious topic of racism and the effect it can have on people and their relationships with other people.

I have enjoyed this book a lot because it has that element of being a young adult’s book because of the topics discussed, but I believe it could still be read by a younger audience and that they would still be able to enjoy it and understand the messages.

Over the past few years, it has become a widely acclaimed TV series that has also focused on the other books in the series. I would recommend it as a good show to watch if you ever have the time.

Overall, I would give this a 5 out of 5 stars and this is because I think it holds the elements of a serious and a fun book at the same time and the author does it well which is a hard thing to do.

MAR 2023 VOL.4

The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes:

This book is written by Suzanne Collins and it is a prequel to The Hunger Games books which is widely famous across the world. Set in a world of fear and violence, the reader follows the journey of Coriolanus Snow, 64 years before we meet him again in the first of The Hunger Games trilogy. The Snow family was once one of the richest in the Capitol prior to the war that resulted in the creation of the Hunger Games ten years earlier. Coriolanus "Coryo" is now an orphan

living with his grandmother and cousin, Tigris, in an apartment they cannot afford, without the money to purchase food or clothes.

What follows is an intriguing adventure of mystery, love and the kindness of human nature. Readers will not recognise this character and will be drawn to the tumultuous events and fascinating twists and turns of the plot.

I would recommend this book to those aged 12 and above. This is because I believe it highlights many issues that younger children may not understand. The thing that I like the most about this book is how it reveals a different angle on an already widely acclaimed series. Overall, I would give this book 4 out of 5 stars and I think that it is a great read for anyone who enjoys high action books and for all those who loved the Hunger Games.

What Does Humility Mean to us?

Theme: Humility.

The definition of humility is the quality of being humble and also being able to recognise mistakes.

Humility is the quality of having a modest or low view of one's importance and acknowledging that there is still more to learn. It involves accepting advice and being able to see mistakes and act upon him. To Christians, humility is being humble and modest. In the Bible, from Ephesians ‘be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love’ demonstrates qualities that a good christian should possess.

As one of the values in our school, we appreciate that feeling humility is part of what helps a person grow as an individual so the academy tries to help our pupils to find the best versions of themselves. We also help our pupils recognise that it is important to celebrate their achievements and we do this through our character point system which encourages us to get as many character points and golden tickets as possible.
