How parents can help their children at home with the work of this theme. Talking and explaining are vital for young children’s development. We know it can be exhausting and occasionally mind-blowing but children really do learn enormous amounts when you are talking with them and listening to them. And most importantly children cannot be expected to read before they have developed a proficiency in spoken language. So for this term here are some things you can try • •

Discuss different countries, the animals and people that live there. What would the weather be like? What would you need to take with you if you were going to visit?

Teachers would be delighted to hear from you if you can offer help in any way for this theme, do contact them in school.

Theme Work for SpringPrimary Term 2019 Shawclough Community School UNIT ONE - RECEPTION

Frozen Planet/Farm Animals The work the children will undertake this half term is focused on animals. The children will be looking at the five different animal groups: Mammals, Reptiles, Amphibians, Birds and Fish. All of the activities planned for the children will cover elements of the National Curriculum and the Early Years Foundation Stage Guidance. Within the teaching and learning activities we are aiming at Early Learning Goals and National Curriculum Learning Intentions. In this booklet are selections of activities, which will offer a range of ways for the children to achieve this. As a school we have considered very carefully what the children of Shawclough really need to develop. We have identified four key areas which we have called our ‘school drivers’. In Reception we will introduce the school drivers through dinosaur toys. Each dinosaur will represent a Characteristic of Learning/ school driver. The dinosaurs are introduced 1 at a time. There are 2 dinosaurs each for the three areas. 1. Creating and Thinking Critically – Solvoducus and Predictoducus. 2. Playing and Exploring – Pretendasaur and Exploraraptor. 3. Active Learning – Triatops and Strayasaurus.
