Year 7 Overview

Pupils in year 7 come with a range of back ground knowledge in French so pupils are introduced to the main SSCs of French (sound symbol correspondences.) By the end of the year pupils will be able to give details about themselves and their family, and their school life including subjects, teachers, equipment and school uniform. Pupils will also be able to give justified opinions on their favourite school subjects, their favourite teachers and develop their answers using the comparative. Pupils are encouraged to use key grammatical terminology from KS2, for example nouns, adjectives and verbs.

Topic/BigQuestion

Year 8 will build upon the vocabulary, grammar and phonics developed throughout year 7. Of particular focus will be infinitive verbs and how these are used in the future tense and with modal verbs. Attenion will also be paid to a wider range of more complex connectives to enable pupils to employ a larger variety of sentence structure. Sound Symbol Correspondences (SSC) and phonics will be taught throughout to increase proficiency and confidence in spoken French. Pupils will be encouraged to give and justify opinions.

In year 9 pupils will continue to acquire vocabulary and apply this across a range of different topics. Pupils will apply their knowledge of a wide variety of infinitive verbs and employ them to the past and future tenses, imbuing them with an increasing level of autonomy with the language. Pupils will continue their work on sound symbol correspondances, which will further equip them to pronounce new vocabulary independently. This year will give year 9 an introduction to the themes covered at GCSE level, whilst interleaving a range of speaking, listening, reading and writing skills in a variety of contexts.
