UK HUMAN RIGHTS DAY

Human Rights Day is observed every year on 10th December.

On 10th December 1948

‘Human rights’ were agreed by the United Nations.

WHAT DO WE MEAN BY HUMAN RIGHTS?

Human rights are the ‘rights that everyone is entitled to as a human being - regardless of race, colour, religion, sex, language, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status’

There are three articles that provide a particularly strong link this week:

LINKED UNCRC ARTICLES

• Article 12 (respect for the views

• of the child)

• Every child has the right to express their views, feelings and wishes in all matters affecting them, and to have their views considered and taken seriously.

• Article 2 (non-discrimination)

• The Convention applies to every child without discrimination, whatever their ethnicity, gender religion, language, abilities or any other status.

• Article 14 (freedom of thought,

• belief and religion)

• Every child has the right to think and believe wha they choose and also to practise their religion, as long as they are not stopping other people from enjoying their rights.
