Year 2 Class Assembly Change of Date

Non Uniform For Chocolate - Friday 16 June
The PFA are holding a non-uniform day on Friday 16 June in exchange for a donation of chocolate for the Summer Fair. The PFA will be collecting the donations on the playground in the morning. As always, if you do not wish to take part by sending in chocolate, your child can come to school dressed in their uniform.

Dinner Menu Change
There will be a new dinner menu introduced from next week. The new menus can be seen on the last page of this update and the rotation will start with week 2.
Bookbags and Water Bottles
If you require bookbags or water bottles ready for September, please can we ask you to order them via ParentPay before Tuesday 18 July so that we can send them home with children or you can collect them before we finish for the summer break. There is no facility to pick up bookbags and water bottles over the summer until school reopens in September. Any orders received over the summer will not be available to send home/collect until w/c 12 September. If you do need to order bookbags over the summer, you can order directly with Touchline.
Please remember that if your child brings in a different bag, it should be no larger than 31cm x 37cm x 8cm as we have very limited storage space.

13-year-old Max Woosey - also known as the ‘Boy in the Tent’ - has recently set a Guinness World Record for the most money raised by camping. Inspired by a family friend, the young teenager has raised over £750,000 for North Devon Hospice. Max spent every night in a tent since he began his challenge three years ago in the garden of his home in Braunton, Devon. ‘It’s been the best three years of my life,’ he said, describing the challenge.
Max wanted to raise awareness of North Devon Hospice, a charity that was a huge help to his neighbour, Rich Abbott, shortly before he sadly passed away. Before his stay in the hospice, Rich gave Max his tent and told him to “have an adventure”. Max spent the first 100 nights in Abbott’s tent and has then been through around ten more in the past three years!

Things to talk about at home:
* What do you imagine would be hard about sleeping in a tent every night? Do you think it is something you would enjoy? Why?
* Who supports you in your life and who do you support? In what ways do you show support?
Win £1000 for School Library
Please help us to win £1000 for our school library and a £100 book token for yourself! For more details see the poster in the community section or click the link below https://www.nationalbooktokens.com/schools.
Our school choir took part in the ‘MAT FACTOR’ yesterday evening at Barrow Hall Theatre. Their performance really raised the roof and, although they didn’t win, they were winners in our eyes! Congratulations to everyone who attended - we are very proud of you all.

Year 6 Make £5 Grow
Year 6 are taking part in the 'Make £5 grow' challenge! Each child has been loaned £5 from the PFA, they are now responsible for creating a business and selling stock to make back their £5.
Year 6 will be selling a variety of goodies within school next week, these include pop, doughnuts, sweets, cookies, cake pops, chocolate fruit kebabs and well-being bags! Children have been given order forms today, if you would like to order any treats to be delivered next Friday, please return your order form to Year 6 on Monday.
Does your child know how to stay safe around water?
There is nothing more devastating than losing a child and as parents, we would do everything in our power to keep them safe. It is surprising to learn that drowning is still one of the leading causes of accidental death in children, and that people are more likely to die from drowning than they are from being hit by a car or in a domestic fire. In recent years, young people missed out on the vital opportunity to swim, leaving a dramatic gap in school swimming and water safety education. With summer fast-approaching, everyone is keen to get out and enjoy the UK’s water sites, teaching your family how to be safe near water is more important now than ever before.
On average 312 people accidentally drown every year and when a child reaches 15-years-old, statistically the water is more likely to claim their life. For every drowning death that occurs, there are more than 10 near-drownings, with many of these leading to life-changing injuries.
Drowning Prevention Week, the national campaign run by the Royal Life Saving Society UK (RLSS UK) 17-24 June 2023, aims to help everyone across the UK and Ireland to enjoy water safely. Drowning is preventable and with a little knowledge and awareness can be avoided. The campaign encourages parents, schools, leisure centres, community groups and businesses to use the Charity’s free online resources to teach children and young people, the skills they need to enjoy a lifetime of fun in the water. To access the resources visit the Royal Life Saving Society UK website. There are a number of things you can do to help keep your family safe this summer:

At open water
Check water sites for hazards, check the safest places to swim and always read the signs. Take time to check the depth and water flow of open water sites
Swim with any children in your care – it’s more fun and you can keep them close and safe
On beaches, check when the tide will be high and low, and make sure that you won’t be cut off from the beach exit by the rising tide. Also, learn to identify dangerous rip-currents
Inflatable dinghies or lilos are a well-known hazard – each year there are drownings as people on inflatables are blown out to sea. Do not use them in open water
Do not swim near to or dive from rocks, piers, breakwater or coral
Swim parallel to the beach and close to the shore
Cold Water is a well-known factor in a number of incidents – always try to play in water where there is a lifeguard or supervision, if not stay close to the shore and enter slowly
At home
Empty paddling pools as soon as they have been used. Always turn paddling pools upside down once empty
Always supervise your children around water, including bath time (never leave children unattended)
Always use gates, fences and locks to prevent children from gaining access to pools of water
Securely cover all water storage tanks and drains
The majority of drowning incidents can be prevented, especially with children. No family should ever have to go through the pain of losing a child through drowning. Make sure everyone is aware of the basic principles of water safety and help keep your families safe this summer.
The Royal Life Saving Society UK have issued the advice opposite:

Summer Fair Donations
A last call for any unloved Teddy donations, good quality books and games for our raffles/stalls. If you have any items you would be willing to donate, please pass to a member of the PFA or drop them into the school office.

Summer Fair Stalls
There are still a few spaces for stalls at the Summer Fair: we are interested in someone to sell plants, balloon artist/supplier, fortune teller, caricaturist or any other stalls that add fun. Stalls are free of charge - please let us know if you are interested by emailing kellyhpfa@gmail.com.
Great Sankey Summer Fun Day - Sunday 11 June
The PFA will have a stall at the Great Sankey Summer Fun Day at Dakota Park, Chapelford on Sunday 11 June. It would be lovely to see you there if you would like to come and support us.
Polytunnel Planting

Thank you for the response from parents and our community following our plea for the donation of plants and other gardening supplies. All of the donations have been put to good use in the school’s polytunnel and the area is currently under going a little makeover to enable the children to use it in the future - have a look at the results in the photographs below. Any further donations would be much appreciated.
Have a lovely weekend and hope to see you on Sunday at Dakota Park!
