Improvising and composing

. Our music curriculum enables pupils to progress through five key strands:

• Understanding the difference between improvisation and composition. Building to including notation in upper Key Stage 2.

Understanding notation

• Knowing that notation is the written form of music. Identifying staff, note names and rests

Our musical learning is built around the inter-related dimensions of music. These dimensions are at the centre of our termly units.

Planned composers and musicians, songs and styles from the past and present have been identified, enabling the pupils to develop an understanding of style, of the history of music and changes over time.

Both formative assessment and end of unit summative assessments inform our planning. Summative assessments are recorded termly and shared with the subject leader.

Music in KS2 is enhanced by our Steel Pan offer. Pupils have the opportunity to further develop their understanding of notation, playing an instrument and performance skills. They learn to play different pieces on different pans and, at the end of every term, are able to perform their final pieces to an audience.
