Curriculum overview for MFL
Phonics
• Teaching key phonemes, learning mouth movements to aid pronunciation and learning to spell.
Grammar
• Teaching structures through revisit and progression
Vocabulary
• Teaching and revisiting key vocabulary
. Our chosen language is Spanish and the MFL curriculum consists of three key strands: phonics, grammar and vocabulary.
This knowledge is then applied, enabling pupils to: Read fluently
Recognising key vocabulary and phrases
Write imaginatively
• Using key vocabulary and phrases to write ideas
Speak confidently
• Using key vocabulary and phrases to verbally communicate ideas
• Understand the culture of the countries in which the language is spoken Developing the background knowledge and cultural capital needed to infer meaning from interactions
Each year group has planned key themes for the term. There is a focus on collaborative learning and learning through talk, with planned opportunities for stories, games, songs and Talk4Writing.
Pupils have the opportunity to learn about Spain and its culture and to listen to and to learn from Native speakers.
Both formative assessment and end of unit summative assessments inform our planning. Summative assessments are recorded termly and shared with the subject leader.
