Curriculum overview for maths
Each year group follows adaptable long-term plans. There is a different focus each week and these are revisited termly. Our weekly units outline the key declarative, procedural and conditional learning.
Between these unit revisits, there is planned retrieval practice to ensure that learning is committed to long-term memory.
. Our curriculum is planned to ensure that pupils have opportunities to secure key skills and develop fluency and become competent in their application, problem-solving and reasoning.
Our daily mathematics teaching contains three key elements: Rapid Recall, Maths 1 and Maths 2.
Rapid Recall
• Key facts for Years 1 to 6 have been identified and there are daily opportunities for pupils to practise and learn across each half term to achieve fluency.
Maths 1
• This forms the first part of the daily maths lesson from EYFS to Year 6 and involves retrieval practice and opportunities for new learning or pre-teaching prior to a unit.
• These plans are adapted according to formative and summative assessments.
Maths 2
• This forms the main teaching part of the lesson.
• There is a weekly focus area for year group teaching which is revisited termly.
• Planned retrieval practice ensures that skills are revisited through Maths 1.
• Concrete resources and pictorial representations used to support understanding where appropriate
A flexible construct is followed in all year groups and ensures that teaching focuses on securing key knowledge and procedures through context and that application, problem solving and reasoning are taught and practised.
Our learning environment provides scaffolds and support and encourages the children to be independent learners.
Weekly maths homework reinforces the previous week’s learning, allowing opportunity for practice and reinforcement.
Both formative assessment and summative assessments are recorded using Bromcom and inform our planning, which includes target pupils and their identified gaps.
Internal and trust moderation ensure that judgments are accurate and that we are continually identifying next steps.
