We linked our topic work this half term to our DT and English by learning all about the 2010 earthquake in Haiti. We learnt about it in our topic lessons, wrote a story about it in English and designed our own earthquake safe buildings in DT.
Year 4 Summer 1: What makes the earth angry? In order to understand natural disasters such as earthquakes and volcanoes, we began the topic by identifying the different layers of the earth.
We learnt all about Tsunamis and how they are caused by earthquakes under the ocean. We then went outside and created our own tsunamis using things that we found in the forest. It was really interesting learning about tectonic plates and the different ways they can move to create an earthquake. We learnt lots of new vocabulary such as convergent, divergent and transform
Finally, we moved onto learning about volcanoes. After learning about what causes a volcano, we designed our own volcano warning sign and looked at the most dangerous volcanoes that can be found around the world.
