Year 1 Spring 2: The Great Fire of London. In lesson 1, we learned that the Great Fire of London began in Pudding Lane and that there is a monument in that place to commemorate the fire designed by Sir Christopher Wren.
We know the fire began in a bakery on Pudding Lane. We identified Pudding Lane on the map and looked at photographs of how it has changed.
A ‘Digital Text’ brought the story of the fire to life and into context. In this session we discussed and recognised the difference between past and present in our own lives and the lives of others.
We experimented with colour to paint the flames that would have been seen across the London skyline. We imagined how the flames would flicker and crackle.
In DT we followed the recipe and developed skills, both in measuring and in bread-making that are needed by a baker such as Thomas Farriner.
Children visited Stockton Fire Station where they learned about the role of a Fire Fighter, experienced using a fire hose, looked at the equipment carried on a fire engine
We built models of some old Tudor houses and discovered that they were made of wood and lots of manure to mix the plaster This made them very flammable and quick to burn! Samuel Pepys was a famous Diarist of the time. We read about his account of the fire and discovered a first hand resource.
We looked in the non-fiction Library to find some books about the Fire of London. It was great to see different illustrations
