Computing Topic Summaries

We use IPads to access maths and literacy activities and games.

We use IPads and paint packages to create our own images and develop our hand-eye co-ordination.

We use old ICT equipment to role play, find and recognise letters on the keypad.

Reception We use technology like Beebots to learn early programming skills.

Children use the computers within the classroom to develop their mouse and typing skills.

Children use the interactive whiteboard and iPads to develop hand-eye coordination as well as practice their phonics and maths.

For Internet Safety Day, we learnt about how to stay safe when online through a story called Hanni’s Window and then a class circle time discussion.

Year 3 Autumn 2 Computing - Information Technology: Exploring our Earth Beginning with an introduction to Google Earth, we began to explore an online presentation of out planet.—We looked at how to zoom in and out, and how to use the ‘Search’tool.

In session 2, we used our skills to begin to find more about our topic: The Vikings. We looked at

where they came from, what their homelands would have been like and the journeys they would have taken to England and even to America.

We discussed how not all information on the Web is reliable and how we should think about what we can trust. We wanted to use the information that we though was most likely to be correct.

To find out more about the Vikings, we began to research and record information.—To consider what information we were looking for?

Considering keywords, questions, synonyms, alternative phrases etc.

Year 5 Spring 2 Computing - Coding using Scratch Our first lesson looked at how to create custom assets and how to save and import internet assets to use in a space themed game.

In session 2, the children had to code the spaceship to follow the mouse. Code the alien to move around on its own. To destroy this spaceship when touched. Code the Battery to spin and disappear “collected” by the ship.

In session 3, the children learn how to create a score system and lives system.

They learn how to use code to tell the game to stop when all lives are gone.

We then created a countdown timer.

The children play and test the game and debug any problems. The children the make the game harder if they need to by adding more aliens.

Year 5 Spring 1 Computing - Digital Literacy & Computer Science Our first lesson looked at Esafety. We recognize that seeking help for oneself or others is a sign of strength. Think out loud together about situations where talking it out can really help

In session 2, we began to learn how to report something online. We know

about apps and services’ community standards, or terms of service and are aware of online tools for reporting abuse.

We then began to look at the app Lightbot to describe, demonstrate and code

using commands and sequences. The children learnt they needed to debug their code to progress through the levels. We then learnt about using functions and loops to make code more efficient.

Our last two sessions use Tynker online, which we used to consolidate and deepen our coding skills from Lightbot.

Year 1 Spring 1 Computing - Digital Literacy - Using a computer/Device We learned how to use our mouse to drag and drop puzzle pieces and create a final picture.

In session 2, we began to learn how to type. We know where to put our fingers to start and which fingers have permission to touch each of the keys.

It was tricky not to use our pointing finger for everything!

In the next session we looked at the rules for using a computer safely. We understand we must be safe, happy and kind while we learn using a device.

This reminded people using a device; how to use if safely and the rules for safety in school.
