Learning in the Early Years Foundation Stage

Activities in Reception are carefully planned and organised to give your child lots of different ways of learning experiences. Mostly learning is done through child led play supported by the adults in the classroom. Staff record the activities your child participates in as well as their progress in specific skills. This is done using the app Seesaw, giving you the opportunity to see what your child is doing and also comment on your child’s work.

Reception | Northbrook Primary Academy (northbrookpa.org)

Planning for each half term is carried out using a topic-based approach, focused around the needs and interests of the children. Each half term a homework menu and curriculum overview is uploaded to the class page on our school website.

Forest School

All About Me Booklet

This booklet is to help inform Mrs Higson of your child’s interests.

Mrs Higson will use the information to enhance the classroom and develop the first couple of weeks in school. Please return the booklet when you have completed it.

Reception Buddies

Each reception child will be given a Year 6 buddy. Their buddies job is to help ease them into school life, support them throughout their time in Reception.

Our New Outdoor Area

Seesaw

• We use Seesaw as a tool to record learning.

• We upload photographs of your child and/or their work. This is an assessment tool for us, but a great insight into your child’s day at school.

• We use the message facility to send group messages to individual child, one class or the whole school. You can privately send and receive messages to the class teacher.

• You will be able to comment and like on your child’s/whole class achievements.

• We encourage you to contribute to your child’s profile by making small observations at home. For example, if your child is at home and spontaneously counts to 10 during play. If your child can ride a bike independently.

• We encourage a variety of different observations, not just academic. You can upload items to Seesaw using your child’s account.

• Over the first few weeks of school we will be uploading videos and messages onto Seesaw to keep in touch with you.

Breakfast and Afterschool Club

Free Breakfast Club - National School Breakfast Programme

We currently run a free breakfast club which all children can access. Drop off is between 8.30-8.40am. This club is subsidised by school and is reviewed each half term.

Paid Breakfast Club

Morning Sessions start at 7.30am until the start of the school day.

Children will be provided with a breakfast in this session. They will have the opportunity to play and relax before the start of the school day.

Paid After School Club

Afternoon sessions run from the end of the school day when children are collected from their classes by the club staff and are collected by 5:55pm.

At the afternoon session they will be offered a snack and a drink and have the opportunity to play, take part in art activities and spend time indoors and outdoors with our competent staff.

School Clubs Clubs | Northbrook Primary Academy (northbrookpa.org)

We have a timetable of lunchtime and afterschool clubs, which change each half term. These are free to access and on a first come basis.

How do I order school meals?

School Lunches

In your pack you will have seen a 3 week menu for school dinners. Our kitchen is run by the local authority and as such we have a 3 week cycle for meals. You will have a menu in your booklet which you circle your child's choice and hand back to the office. Please complete this before September.

My child has dietary needs what do I do?

Our amazing kitchen staff are used to catering for any number of dietary needs. If you think of anything specific then please speak to the office and we will discuss with the kitchen. If the request is due to a medical issue/allergy please make sure you provide with a copy of the doctors/NHS letter.

How much do school dinners cost?

If your child is in Reception, Year 1 or Year 2 then they are entitled to an infant free school meal. This has nothing to do with pupil premium (next slide). When your child gets to year 3 if they are not pupil premium you will then be charged per meal. If they are pupil premium they will still be entitled to a free school meal.

Any other questions?

If you have any questions please feel free to speak to any of the staff or phone Mrs Borg in the office.

Pupil Premium Grant

What are the benefits of claiming free school meals?

School meals are a good way to ensure that your child eats well at lunchtime, and they can also save you time and money. Claiming free school meals also helps the school. We get extra funding, known as the ‘pupil premium’, for every eligible pupil who is registered.

What is the pupil premium?

The pupil premium grant is funding provided to schools to help all pupils reach their full potential, regardless of their background or financial situation. How is the pupil premium funding used?

The pupil premium is not used to pay for school meals. Schools use the funding to improve the attainment of pupils who are eligible.

How can I ensure the school gets the funding?

The more eligible pupils that are registered for free school meals, the more funding the school receives. Registering does not mean your child has to take up free school meals if they don’t want to. You should still register for free school meals even if:

· Your child already receives universal infant free school meals

· You would rather your child had a different meal, such as a packed lunch

School Uniform

• Clothing: At Northbrook all children wear a school uniform. This consists of a white polo shirt with the school logo and a purple jumper or cardigan with the school logo, grey trousers, shorts, skirt or pinafore and black school shoes.

• P.E. Kits: Children wear their PE kit to school on their PE day. This is a purple PE t-shirt with the school logo, a purple hoodie with the school logo and black shorts, black jogging bottoms or leggings and black pumps or trainers.

• When you start in reception you can order a bundle of free uniform.

• Please feel free to try on school uniform and complete your order form before leaving today.

(Please ensure that all clothing that your child wears or brings into school, is clearly named)

Transition

A smooth transition is really important to us.

We visit your child in their familiar setting (nursery or home if they don’t attend a nursery) and talk to the adults that know them best.

We have 3 sessions for transition and would encourage you to do as many as possible. This is a great opportunity for your child to play in their classroom and to get to know their new teachers and peers. If you have any worries about the transition to school, please do not hesitate to speak to us.

Our Transition Sessions

We have split the class into half and your child will be either in group 1 or group 2. You will be greeted at the office and your child will be taken down to their classroom. You are more than welcome to stay for refreshments or you can just arrive back for collection. We will open up our Haig avenue car park for you to collect your child from the classroom door.
