At this time of year, when spring is in the air, we look back and consider everything that has happened since the Christmas break. Considering this is the shortest and most compact term of the year, it is no less filled with amazing opportunities and achievements from the students.
Year 11 have started their final run towards the end of exams, for the most part, with gusto and enthusiasm. The ‘Stop the Drop’ campaign has been really well attended this year, and the maturity shown by our Year 11 students has been incredible. Following the mock exams, we have met with each student to look at where they are, how we can support them, and which intervention sessions are best placed to help them achieve their very best in the exam season. We will be open over the Easter break in order to offer even more support to the students, helping them with those last-minute anxieties over areas they need to revise. There has also been our annual visit of Humanutopia to the school for the Year 11 students. This is always a cathartic process for the students and incredibly helpful and insightful at such an opportune moment of their maturation process.
School events and trips have been numerous this term, with everything from competitions in science, ‘Top of the Bench’ at Preston, and MFL, ‘Think like a linguist,’ allowing students to experience the academic options in post-16 and university settings, to the Rome adventure, where the students were given the opportunity to soak up the culture of a different country. Students had the opportunity to go and see one of their set texts for English, ‘An Inspector Calls,’ which always helps with context, seeing the script come to life, and also watching the process by which the author intended the play to be experienced.
Over 45 students were entered into the UK Maths Challenge, which is mentioned later on in the newsletter, while on a more artistic front, the Arts department have had both visiting artists and the Lancashire Music bus coming in to work with our students. And at the end of this term will be the much-anticipated school show, ‘Legally Blonde.’
The LGBTQ+ club has reopened with Miss Wright at the helm, and the students have been looking at historical figures, amongst other things, which they have started to display around school. Looking further into the newsletter, you will see more information on that.
The Library has also been busy with new collections of books. The digital library has extended its range, and there are new fun activities taking place after school with reading challenges and clubs.
We have had dance competitions, Shakespeare performances, students being accepted onto football teams, and college applications for performing arts colleges at the highest levels.
Haven Holidays has visited school to work with Year 10 on employability skills and CV workshops. Year 9 this term has been choosing their option choices, the deadline for which was Friday 21st March. To achieve this, they have been supported in a number of ways, starting with the Options evening, followed by 1:1 interviews with each of the students, who showed incredible maturity in their thought processes, preparation, and questions. After they met with staff, they then went on to try the options taster sessions, where they chose 4 options to try before making final decisions. This has been a great process, led well by Mr Gordon, and the students have exemplified the SMART ethos of the school.
There are always a wide range of sporting opportunities at Montgomery, and this term has been no different, with Indoor athletics and countless matches in netball, rounders, football, basketball, and badminton. All of which will be detailed and pictorially represented further along in the newsletter.
Not to be missed have also been some of the GCSE exams in both Drama and Food & Nutrition, where the students have practised and demonstrated their skills to the best of their abilities, and now all that is left to do for those segments is await the final results in August. We also looked at moderation with some of the Year 11 subjects as well.
STEAM Club have run their ‘Who murdered Mr Careless?’ sessions, with the prime suspects from amongst the staff having their mugshots taken in preparation for our budding
criminologists and police teams to solve the ‘Whodunnit?’ crime.
Years 7, 8, and 11 have had their Progress Evenings with staff and parents. I hope you were able to join us for those, as attendance levels have been the best we have known since my time here. If not, we look forward to seeing you at our next opportunity to work together to support the students’ process. In the meantime, if you do have any questions on aspects of the curriculum, behaviour, or support options offered by the school, please do feel free to contact us.
Every time I look at all the things that we squeeze into a term with the students, I am able to sit back and admire the quality and dedication of the people who surround me. So, as always, thank you to our fantastic staff for their tireless work and continual support.
To the students, enjoy your two-week break, unless you are in Year 11, who need some break as well as some revision. I look forward to seeing as many Year 11 students as possible for the Easter School revision sessions.
Have a great Easter everyone!
Mr. Careless

Our Axiom Maths Circles contined this term ran by Mr Diver and Miss Howsen-Tax in which some of our most enthusiastic mathematicians have been spending their tuesday afternoons working together to solve some tricky Maths problems! This programme is a UK wide initiative to encourage the love of mathematics and further deeper understanding.
This term our Year 10s and Year 9s had the chance to take part in the Intermediate UK Maths Challenge, applying their mathematical knowledge and problem solving school. Montgomery Students earned 14 bronze and six silver certificates.
Well done to Oliver P of Year 9 who was best in school.
The Science department at Montgomery Academy has enjoyed a very positive and action-packed start to 2024. Gone are the dark, cold autumn days and instead, the extra light brought about by Spring has ensured our team and our students have extra reasons to smile in s-block. Our ongoing aim is to motivate and inspire our students to share our passion for science and build an inclusive team ethos in the department; a culture that we believe will allow our students to reach their full potential. As well as continuing to offer our popular and well-established STEAM club and dissection club, we have continued our longstanding collaborations with the Institute of Physics and the Ogden Trust. Lots has gone on this term such as house challenges, competitions, staff training, transition activities with local primary schools and supporting new physics teachers of the future.
and more!
Our amazing science team continue to deliver exciting and engaging lessons to give the students the best hands-on experience.
In year 7 the students have been learning about different types of cells and have been using microscopes to observe the different organelles within them.
In year 8 they have been doing some amazing chemical reactions whilst
making observations such as temperature changes and colour changes. These include exothermic, endothermic and combustion reactions just to name a few.
In year 9 students have been learning about the structure and development of the atom
as well as explaining trends within the periodic table. The science teachers continue to enthuse our KS3 scientists of the future whilst also preparing our KS4 students for their GCSEs to give them the best opportunities moving forwards.
Mr Johnston continues to lead dissection club again this year. So far, they have learned about the circulatory system by observing the different chambers of the heart.
They have also dissected lungs to learn about how it is adapted for aerobic respiration. Hopefully, this is just the beginning for those surgeons of the future.
It will be eyes for those future opticians and optometrists.
Norbreck Students dissect hearts at Montgomery!
We were also very proud to welcome 90 students from one of our feeder primary schools – Norbreck primary – to carry out a heart dissection on Thursday 13th February. These dissections were led by Dr Hutchinson, Mr Mistry and Mr Mason and students and staff all had a great time. The year 6 pupils were very mature and safe and the student helpers in year 11 and year 10 were a credit to the school. All involved had great fun whilst learning some amazing facts about the heart. We look forward to welcoming Norbreck and other primary schools back for more exciting science activities.
Our senior lab technician Mrs Bach had the pleasure of taking 4 of our enthusiastic science students to the top of the bench competition at UCLAN Preston.
There was a chemistry lab challenge in the morning followed by some fun forensics’ activities in the afternoon. The team worked together brilliantly and were a credit to the school. Excellent work team Montgomery for making us proud!
As part of our partnership with the Ogden Trust and Lancaster University we had the pleasure to welcome 3 Physics undergraduates from Lancaster University that are aspiring to become teachers.
They each planned a 30-minute lesson and delivered it to 3 of our year 9 classes. They taught topics such as electromagnetism and static electricity. Our experienced teaching staff then gave them feedback and encouragement to support their growth and development. We wish all three of them the best of luck in the future and hope they go on to be very successful whether they decide to go into teaching or something else.
As part of our collaboration with the stimulating physics network and the institute of physics, we are fortunate to have received some excellent subject knowledge enhancement CPD
Chris Wallace has come into our science department to deliver 2 sessions on the topics of Electricity and Waves. We have
looked at exciting practicals and demonstrations that we can use to tackle misconceptions and give our students the best classroom
experience when learning about these challenging topics. We are very much looking forward to our third session on electromagnetism later this year.
Next week we will be carrying out our 2nd house challenge of this academic year.
In the last house challenge students were using their ideas about forces and centre of mass to build the tallest paper tower. This house challenge will involve them using their knowledge of acids and alkalis to produce a rainbow in a test tube. The best rainbow will be the winner! Great care and patience are needed to be successful so which house will have the knowledge and skills to be the champions of making rainbows.
We are very delighted to have received a free trial of Sparx Science for the rest of this academic year. The students will already be familiar with Sparx maths.
This great platform offers personalised learning homework for every student. We want our students to retrieve the knowledge they have learned in lessons which will lead them to make greater progress and reach their maximum potential. We are currently trialling it with a few classes but after Easter will be looking to expand to many more classes and year groups. So far, we have been impressed with this new platform and hope the students will find this homework engaging and useful, hence leading to better outcomes.
Department but across the whole school. Students were in for a real treat this year with tutor group activities, quizzes and a Travelling Tale.
Students from each tutor group were invited to join our English Department and create their favourite book character using art materials and a potato.
The students were creative and imaginative in their choices, Miss Moody enjoyed judging the competition. As well as this ‘spudtastic’ event, students were quizzed on their favourite reads from the past and the present as part
of the World Book Day themed lessons. During tutor time, students created a three-course dinner menu for their five favourite book characters and included a range of foods and entertainment.
The Travelling Tale has now become an annual feature on World Book Day and a feature which is enjoyed by all students at the start of every lesson. This year’s travelling tale by Chris Priestley, was chosen by Mrs Walmsley. It was based around Japan and its culture, the book ‘Irezumi’, a form of Japanese tattoo art, follows the story of twelve-yearold Stephen Fletcher, a naval boy, and his shipmate Mattie who, after stepping of the docked naval ship, embark on a journey through the port of Nagasaki on the island of Kyushu in Japan. Their journey begins with a visit to a mysterious local tattoo parlour and ends in a horrifying monstrous discovery.
ENGLISH LITERATURE TRIP TO
In February, the English department took 92 GCSE English Literature students from Years 10 and 11 to the famous Blackpool Grand Theatre to watch a live performance of Stephen Daldry’s National Theatre production of J.B. Priestley’s ‘An Inspector Calls’.
As a text studied in class for GCSE, the play truly comes to life in the theatre, an experience that only enriches the students' understanding of the characters and the events of the play.
The performance received positive feedback from the
students and the enquiring questions asked on our journey home reflected what an amazing educational experience the students had enjoyed.
Priestley’s messages of community, responsibility, and class divide embedded
throughout the play were brought to life through the fantastic staging and amazing special effects which featured real rain and a model of an upper-class house, partially suspended, only added to the cultural experience of live theatre for our students.

This year students from a range of year groups created some “Creepy Crawly” inspired art pieces which were then submitted to the exhibition. Well done to Samara P and Isla P who were the competition winners.
Special thanks to our other contributors; Elliemay F, Lyla M, Ashlea C, Alfie A, Ollie-George H, Erin D, Elizabeth N, Loralai W, Sidharth J, Elliot B, Siva J, Leo A, Aivan D, Macie C, Ellie T, Lola R, Gabriella V, Lee S, Noah B and Bethany C.
Young Seasiders 2025 – well done to all FCAT students and staff involved with this years event held at B&FC.
A group of Year 10 and 11 students had an unforgettable — and spine-tingling — evening at the Liverpool Playhouse, watching the record-breaking West End hit Ghost Stories by Jeremy Dyson and Andy Nyman.
The atmosphere was electric, the tension was palpable, and the play delivered jump scares and eerie moments that kept everyone on the edge of their seats. It was a masterclass in suspense and storytelling — a truly unfor-gettable theatrical experience!
Our Year Ten Computer Science students embarked on an exciting field trip to Blackpool and Fylde College, where they immersed themselves in the world of cyber security through a series of innovative activities.
The day began with an engaging live webinar led by an RAF leader who played a key role in the North West mission to build the national cyber centre in Lancashire. This inspiring session gave students a real-life insight into the dynamic field of cyber security and the significant work being done at a national level.
Following the webinar, the students were treated to an immersive theatre production performed by college students. The short production celebrated famous females in STEM, sparking curiosity and admiration as it highlighted the groundbreaking contributions of women in the science and technology sectors.
Eager to put their learning into practice, the group then dove into an encryption activity focusing on the Caesar cipher method. This hands-on challenge allowed students to decode messages, sharpening their analytical skills and deepening their understanding of cryptography.
After a well-deserved lunch break, the students moved to a new room for the final activity of the day: a phishing email workshop.
Here, they explored the various tactics used by cybercriminals to trick people and then put their knowledge to the test by analysing a series of emails to decide whether they were genuine or phishing attempts.
Throughout the day, the students not only demonstrated exceptional conduct but also showcased their prior understanding of cyber security, earning high praise from the college staff. It was a day filled with learning, inspiration, and practical experience – a perfect blend of education and fun that left everyone eager for the next adventure in the world of technology.
For me, careers is one of the most exciting elements of the curriculum because this is the part where pupils can literally branch out into any area they want, research all the opportunities out there and make decisions for themselves about things that will shape their life pathway.
In January, our Year 9 students had the fantastic opportunity to attend the Blackpool Town wide Careers Fair, where they were able to meet with professionals from a variety of industries.
This event was an invaluable chance for students to explore career options, ask questions and gain insight into the different paths available after Montgomery. It was a wonderful step in helping them think about their future ambitions.
Looking ahead to the summer term, we have secured another highly anticipated work experience
at Haven Marton Mere for our Year 9 student. This experience will allow them to gain realworld skills, explore the working environment and better understand the expectations of the workforce. It’s a great way to prepare for life beyond Montgomery and continue to develop important life skills.
In February, our Year 10 students took part in an Employability and CV Building session provided by Haven Marton Mere.
The session was a huge success, with many students expressing how useful and informative they found it. It provided them with valuable tools to create an effective CV, along with interview techniques and tips on how to boost their employability. The positive feedback from students highlights how beneficial the session was in preparing them for their future job applications and career pathways. Please see the feedback over here
Year 11 students will have a unique opportunity to register their interest for any upcoming roles at both of our local haven site (Cala-Grand & Marton Mere).
Haven are giving any Montgomery Year 11 student the opportunity to have at very least a screening interview with them for a summer role. This will give them the chance to gain work experience during the summer break. These roles will provide students with hands-on experience and could lead to future opportunities at Haven. It’s an excellent way for our Year 11 students to begin building their
career portfolios and gain experience that will make them stand out in future applications, whether for jobs, apprenticeships, or further education. All information on this has been sent to students, parents, Head of Year and Group Tutors of Year 11. You can also scan the QR codes to register your interest. We are fortunate to have an extremely positive partnership and hope this continues.
To express your interest simply scan our QR Code below, complete the application and our park team will be in contact.

We are thrilled to offer these events and opportunities, and are always looking for more providers and professionals to collaborate with to help our students gain the skills and experiences they need to succeed in the world of work. Encouraging career exploration at every stage of their education is key to helping our students make informed decisions about their futures. We look forward to seeing them take full advantage of these exciting career-building opportunities!
Stay tuned for more updates and further career events throughout the year!
A
group of students asked if we could start an LGBTQ+ club for them and we delivered! As a school we think this is great opportunity for a safe place for like minded students to meet and make friends.
We focus on creative activities and cater to student requests for ideas of what they would like to do.. Ultimately it’s about community and having fun!
The first week of LGBTQ+ club our staff member Eren designed art colouring sheets of people throughout LGBTQ+ history, showcasing the changes they made to the world in terms of activism etc.
