Science Skills Progression

Page 1

Please see below for our school’s Knowledge and Skills Progression in Science. We have looked carefully at the EYFS and Primary Years curriculum and set out a ‘two year rolling programme’ which show when we will teach each part of the curriculum over the course of two years. This ensures children in mixed age classes are taught everything set out in the curriculum whichever class they may be in. Cycle A

Class Knowledge Skill

Animals including Humans

1 (EYFS) Draw pictures of the human body and name some of the different body parts. Match animals to the foods that they eat. Describe some ways that plants or animals should be cared for in order for them to survive.

Identify that humans and some other animals have skeletons and muscles for support, protection and movement

Describe and compare the structure of a variety of common animals (fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals including pets) Identify, name, draw and label the basic parts of the human body and say which part of the body is associated with each sense

Identify and describe the functions of different parts of flowering plants: roots, stem/trunk, leaves and flowers

Identify and describe the basic structure of a variety of common flowering plants, including trees

Explore the requirements of plants for life and growth (air, light, water, nutrients from soil, and room to grow) and how they vary from plant to plant
