Do you want to know how analytical techniques are used in medical and commercial laboratories?

Do you want to learn more about safety, scientific procedure and legislation?

Are you interested in learning about how diseases and infections are treated?

Do you want to find out how medical test results relate to the diagnosis and tracking of a disease?

Is Medical Science for you?

You must have achieved 5 GCSEs at grade C or above, including at least a grade C in a GCSE Science subject or BTEC First (Merit level) in a Science related area. You also must have achieved at least a grade C in GCSE Maths.

You want to enhance your knowledge and understanding of Science while also gaining confidence in your own abilities through the practical aspects of the course.

You want to develop the skills and learn the background knowledge useful for employment in the Medical Services industry.

Applied Science (Medical) is studied as a Subsidiary Diploma (equivalent of 1 A Level) over one year. You can then progress onto the Diploma (equivalent of 2 A Levels) in your second year.

This takes up TWO of your subject choices at college.

What will I learn?

Physiology of Human Body Systems

This course takes up two of your subject choices at college. You will study both the Applied Science and Forensic Science units.

The Applied Science units cover Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

You must therefore have a strong interest in science to take on this course.

Fundamentals of Science You will use microscopes to find out about the different cells and tissues of the body. You will study chemical reactions and bonding and investigate different types of energy. You will explore the topic of scientific communication and discover how scientific information is communicated to other scientists while preparing your own scientific report.

Working in The Science Industry You will develop an understanding of the role played

by Science Technicians and other professionals who work in a variety of scientific places and disciplines.

You will discover what it is like to be a modern scientist and consider the importance of working safely. You will also examine practices and procedures followed in modern science laboratories and how the use of ICT makes Science workplaces efficient and effective. You will also design your own laboratory to meet the needs of a general science workplace.

Scientific Practical Techniques You will select and use a variety of appropriate equipment and instruments to carry out core practical techniques. You will develop your ability to test substances and materials using a range of scientific instruments. You will use cutting edge techniques such as gel electrophoresis and practice every day techniques such as identification of biological molecules.

Microbiological Techniques You will learn the key concepts and techniques of microbiology, and develop the skills needed to work safely in a microbiology laboratory. You will analyse samples for bacterial infection and look at different treatments that can be used to control the spread of infection. You will also study other microorganisms, the spread of viruses and how fungal growth can be controlled.

Biomedical Science Techniques You will develop your understanding of microorganisms further and increase your knowledge of organisms of medical importance.

You will also look at haematology and the science of blood transfusions, as well as how cell pathology is used to diagnose and track the progression of diseases.

How will I be assessed?

There are no exams for this course. All assessment is through set assignments which you will need to submit according to strict deadlines

What activities can I get involved in?

There are opportunities for visits to interesting and relevant places and exhibitions which bring classroom learning to life. This has included a trip to the ‘Bodies’ exhibition to learn about the structure and physiology of the human body, plus the chance to take part in a hands-on Molecular Genetics Workshop at NOWGEN in Manchester.

You will build upon your knowledge of Biology, going on to look at how the digestive system is adapted to process the food we eat. You will also study how the circulatory and respiratory systems work and how their output can be measured.

You will use various pieces of equipment to take physiological measurements of pulse, blood pressure and oxygen saturation. You will also examine how the systems of the body all work together to carry out functions which enable us to survive.

After studying the Medical Science Subsidiary Diploma in your first year, subject to your grades, you can then study Medical Science (as two subjects) in your second year of college and achieve BTEC Level 3 Diploma Applied Science (Medical Science) which is equivalent to two A Levels.

Depending on your other subject choices, this qualification can provide a route in to careers in the Science industry. It can also provide a route into Higher Education, after which you could pursue a career in related medical fields such as a paramedic, hospital laboratories and operating theatres, radiography and nursing.
