Principal’s Welcome
As we move towards the end of our first summer half term and GCSEs have well and truly begun, we are mindful of how quickly time can go, with Year 7s coming towards the end of their first year at Lostock Hall Academy and Year 11 students completing their GCSEs.
This newsletter demonstrates not just the academic experiences that our students receive during their time with us, but those wider more creative ones, which play an important part in the development of wider skills and knowledge, helping to make our students not only excellent citizens and young adults but future employees.
Creativity has always been an important aspect of our curriculum and continues to
remain so, as we lead the way in projects such as the Jazz Festival seen on Wednesday night. The festival was a shining example of the talent we have at LHA and we are very proud of all who participated in the event. Take a look at pages 2-4.

Fish Hero’s Project - Food Preparation and Nutrition
our current Year 10 Food Preparation and Nutrition Class have had the opportunity to cook with fish this half term, thanks to the generous donation of salmon we received from the Fish Hero’s Project. The project, organised by the Food Teacher’s Centre, works with fish suppliers, to provide secondary schools across the country with fish, giving students the chance to prepare, cook and eat it. The students excelled themselves making honey and garlic glazed salmon as well as a salmon and tarragon tartlet. This is an amazing opportunity for our students – thank you to the Fish Hero’s Project and the Food Teacher’s Centre.

Used batteries are easy to recycle and the materials that they contain can be turned into many new products. This half term, the Eco Schools group have been busy with the Great Big Battery Hunt. We all have used batteries lying around at home and the Great Big Battery Hunt was the opportunity to recycle as many of these as possible.
Students and staff at LHA brought in an amazing 58.5 kilograms of batteries for recycling. Everyone who brought batteries has been awarded Citizenship achievement points. The students who brought the most batteries were Mia Reid Strang and Thomas Freeman in Year 9 and Benji Cockburn in Year 8. These students also enjoyed some edible prizes for their efforts.

Eco Schools News
The subject of school uniform often generates interesting discussion. Parents value cost and quality and teenagers sometimes want to interpret certain aspects more loosely, but fundamentally, they understand the benefits of belonging to a school community, which expresses its culture, traditions and aspirations through a shared identity and commitment to smartness.
Through our core values and belief a uniform helps to set the right tone for learning and we encourage our students to respect each other and be proud of the way they look and the sense of unity that is achieved from wearing the ‘team strip’.
You may be aware that the government has asked schools to review their uniform policy to make sure costs are reasonable and value for money.
As school leaders, we assume that parents/carers embrace the ethos and values of the school when you join. We hope that the expectations and standards that we promote each day align with your own desire for consistency.
In school, leadership needs to be responsive to the changing nature of society and therefore inclusivity has been at the heart of the review. Minor alterations have been made with this in mind:
From September 2023 all Year 7 students
• Blue shirt/blouse with a closed neck for all students
• Tie for all students
• There will continue to be an option for all students to wear the LHA logo’d skirt or school uniform trousers, purchased from a uniform stockist – not a fashion outlet
• Students opting to wear the skirt will be expected to wear 60/70 denier tights. An ankle sock may be worn as Summer concession after May half term
The sports kit has been simplified to include,
• New whole school PE top for all students
All current students who will be in Year Groups 8-11 from September 2023 will be required to adopt the changes in full by September 2024
We recognise that you may be replacing some items of uniform over the summer break and therefore you may wish to adopt the new arrangements partially or fully ahead of the September 2024 date.
See Synergy for a full breakdown of the review.
