COURAGE COMMITMENT COMPASSION
Dear Parents/Carers,
Thank you for being so supportive during this academic year. There have been so many highlights and achievements. We are now in the final weeks before exams start for our Year 11 students, and it is vital that they align with our vision:
take ownership of our learning and aspirations so that we fulfil our unique potential;
All students at Little Ilford School are unique, and our mission is to ensure they achieve their full potential wherever that lies. I am incredibly proud of our students’ hard work this academic year. They continue to be dedicated, especially following the unprecedented challenges presented by the pandemic. Despite the previous disruptions to their learning, our students have demonstrated a thirst for knowledge and a willingness to adapt. They have shown resilience and a positive attitude that has been truly inspiring.
Furthermore, I want to express my gratitude to our staff members who have gone above and beyond to support our students during these challenging times. Their unwavering commitment to providing quality education and a safe learning environment has been commendable.
As we look forward to the last half term of the academic year, I am confident our school will continue to thrive. We are committed to providing an exceptional education that will prepare our students for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. We will continue to strive for excellence, foster a culture of respect, and create a supportive and inclusive community.
Thank you all for your continued support.
Mr Andrew Finn Headteacher

Maths Challenge Results A First-Of-Its-Kind Science Fair at LIS Women’s Month Events and more!
Year 7 and Year 10 artists have been exploring nature and its meanings with our artist-inresidence, Katie Spragg. The students have worked hard to create pieces which highlight the complexity of plant life they also found themselves asking some interesting philosophical questions.
Thank you to the Art Department for providing this great opportunity for the students. Their pieces are a testament to creativity at Little Ilford School.
‘Every group had their own piece of paper and boxes which we had to decorate. My group showed grass growing and the sun coming out of the clouds. We decorated clay and then videoed it. There were interesting moments where you could see the nature moving on video without us doing anythingbut we were behind the scenes! It made me feel involved and part of something bigger.’
- Erika, 7.7
‘I’d never worked with clay before. Having the opportunity to do so was fun and different for me. I created a manmade structure - the background was square and unnatural, with plants coming out of it. It symbolised how sometimes mankind will try to tame things, but nature can’t be tamed. My creation highlighted the resilience of nature’ - Sumayyah, 10.4
‘Our creations showed plants thriving and growing through the cracks’ - Sarah, 10.10
‘I found it fun to shape my product the way I wanted. I had a lot of creative freedom. The whole process made me feel like I can do things and make changes if I want to’ - Isra, 10.1

Year 10 Visit to the Supreme Court
The Year 10 Citizenship Studies students went on a visit to the Supreme Court on Monday 30th January. The students had an opportunity to tour the courtrooms, have a Q&A session and also sit in an appeal hearing; the case the students witnessed being discussed was whether a section of the Policing and Crime Act 2009 is incompatible with Article 5 of the European Convention on Human Rights. All students were very well behaved in the court, and we received some great feedback from the staff at the Supreme Court.

Year 7 Art and French Trip to Cezanne Exhibition at Tate Modern
Mr Demart from the languages department and Ms Zamora from the art department took a group of 28 year 7 students to see the artwork of French painter Paul Cezanne, and to see the installation work of Chilean Artist Cecilia Vicuna in the Turbine Hall, on Thursday 26th January 2023.
The students were exceptionally well behaved and enjoyed looking at the different themes within the artwork whilst also practicing some of the French Vocabulary they have been studying this term. Paul Cezanne is also one of the artists the year 7 students have researched as part of the Formal Elements of Art this academic year.
It was a chance for the students to see up close how an artist develops and also to make connections between languages and art.

Quantum Theatre’s A Christmas Carol for Year 11 English Students
“The Quantum Theatre Company very successfully brought to life Dickens’s famous novel for our students. The performance was extremely engaging, informative and above all entertaining; the students had nothing but positive comments regarding the performance and were an excellent audience.”
“The show was brilliant! The actors brought to life the novel in a fabulous manner and the students were engaged from the onset. My pupils were extremely positive about the performance after the show. The students also need recognition for being a wonderful audience.”
“I was impressed by year 11, they were attentive and respectful throughout, many of them saying how much they enjoyed the show. The play itself was a really good, student friendly, adaptation of A Christmas Carol; perfect for revision of the plot. The actors delivered a high-energy, humorous, very engaging performance that clearly inspired our students, judging by the acting career questions that were asked by students in the post performance Q&A session.”
- English Department Members
“It is a fair, even-handed, noble adjustment of things, that while there is infection in disease and sorrow, there is nothing in the world so irresistibly contagious as laughter and good humor.”
“They used the important quotes, which was really helpful for revision” - Basmina 11.8
“The actors were very engaging and entertaining” - Samiha 11.7
“I loved their enthusiasm” - Randy 11.6

A Performance of Macbeth with the English Department
The Globe Theatre delivered yet another riveting performance of our GCSE text Macbeth for our year 11 students on Tuesday 28th February. The performance was highly engaging, entertaining and informative. The students gained very helpful insight into the crafting of the play and characters, which the actors communicated powerfully.
“look like the innocent flower, / But be the serpent under’t”
“Come what come may, / Time and the hour runs through the roughest day”
Our English teachers noted how the students demonstrated heartfelt engagement with Macbeth. For instance, the students recognised the humour in the Porter’s comedic performance with a good laugh, and applauded with relief when the Shakespearean moral order was restored at the end of the play.

National Careers Week—Y10 Trips
As part of National Careers Week year 10 students had the opportunity to go out on two educational visits, during the week commencing 6th March 2023, to the Queen Elizabeth Park. Selected Media, Drama & Technology students were given the opportunity to go backstage at Abba Voyage and listen to professionals speak about how the show was created, get to watch snippets of the show and listen to a panel speak about their careers journeys into visual effects and the different films they have worked on including Black Panther, Iron Man plus many more. It was a fantastic opportunity and inspirational for many including staff!
Another group of students were given the opportunity to visit Build East and learn more about the wide range of construction projects and careers available to school leavers and beyond. Did you know that there are over 350 different careers within the construction industry but most people will automatically think of the more common jobs such as bricklayers, plumbers, plasterers, labourers etc.
Thank you for all the support with the TurkeySyria Earthquake Appeal! Staff and students were busy making and selling badges and managed to raise an amazing £255.35. Adding this to the £403.47 we raised at the staff bake sale earlier this term, our grand total becomes £658.82.
Absolutely amazing - credit to all those that contributed ideas, time and donations. We hope LIS can continue to be a source of aid for our wider community as time goes on!
All funds went to the Disasters Emergency Committee.

“It was outstanding. We don’t often get the opportunity for junior schools to see secondary schools. The crossover between Little Ilford School and the local primary schools was excellent. It was also a learning curve for the students. It showed that collaboration is key and the way to move forward. It allowed the younger students to overcome some of their fears around secondary school, and for the secondary school students to gain some valuable work experience with the primary school students. This is what we are reaching for.” - Alistaire Lowe,

Celebrating Women’ at LIS, Saturday 18th March
On Saturday 18th March, ‘Celebrating Women’ took place at LIS: inspirational women across our community joined together as a panel to discuss what being a woman meant to them and how their stories have shaped them to become the powerful women they are today.
I found the panellists very inspiring as I found many parts of their journeys relatable, so it made me realise how much potential I could have as a woman if I keep true to myself. It was great to have people who had made amazing changes to different industries on the same panel as I was able to take many things away. What amazed me the most was how people who I had been in the same situations as had gone on to become people I aspire to be, so it made me question why I couldn’t follow them to be more confident and proud of who I am.
I feel hopeful after Saturday as I took away a lot of the advice the panellists gave such as to have faith in yourself and use past experiences to empower others. Being surrounded by women who used the little they had to make the changes they wanted to see inspires me to do the same.

Women of the World (WOW) Event at London’s Southbank Centre, Saturday 11th March
On Saturday 11th of March I attended WOW day. The day was full of talks about many current events revolving around what it means to be a woman and changes we want to see.
I found the experience to be really inspiring as I was constantly surrounded by people who wanted change and I felt empowered by the women who spoke on the panels. Many of the things I heard resonated with me and I can now take them to change how I perceive the people around me and strive to be the best version of myself. I also found it interesting to join talks about topics I wouldn’t usually be the most interested in such as the Nike Sports panel as it was great to see how diverse the people at WOW were and to see how things like sport empowered them. However, despite our different interests, what I loved was that we all gathered at WOW for one underlining reason: to celebrate our achievements and to inspire others to create a more positive world for women. I was overwhelmed by the amount of positivity from the people there, especially at the opening ceremony and it’s events like these that make me proud to be a woman and hopeful for the future.
At the WOW event, Gloria Mindo (head student) was lucky enough to get up on stage from the audience in the opening ceremony and was able to meet and speak to Sandi Toksvig as well as Jude Kelly who set up the WOW festival in 2010. It is now celebrated in 23 countries around the world.

Year 10 Mock Interviews with KPMG
Here are some photos from the Year 10 Mock Interviews with professionals from KPMG on Wednesday 22nd March 2023. We organised these competency-based interviews with one of our partners, East London Business Alliance (ELBA), and the students arrived eager and well-prepared. We are happy that the students had this opportunity, which has provided them with invaluable experience for interviews they will have in the future - we hope to see more of this taking place at Little Ilford School.
Girls Workshop with Jackie Alecho
Jackie Alecho was born June 14th 1990, in London, Newham, to parents who came here as refugees from Uganda. She attended LIS from September 2001 to 2006, and is a graduate of Creative Writing from the London Metropolitan university.
She has written a book of poems and monologues about her life experiences as a young black girl growing up and wanted to share these with our students. She said she wanted to “plant the seed of understanding”.
One of the tasks was ‘A Letter to Older Me’:
To Older me,
Make sure you take care of yourself, and your family, and your education. I want you to be the most successful version of yourself possible. Even if it’s hard, don’t burn yourself out. Make everyone proud of you, and represent the people you love, wherever they are.
From Younger You.
Sports Roundup: Little Ilford School Girls’ Football
Friday 20th January 2023
On Friday 20th January, Little Ilford girls emerged victorious with an astonishing 8-1 win against Royal Docks Academy. With hat tricks from Chandra Bangura 10.2, Macy Gamon 10.9 and the final brace from Iqra Khan 10.9, they start the new year off on a winning streak.
The first half felt like a breeze with 3 goals already, with Chandra scoring a beautiful free kick that blew everyone away, securing the fourth goal. Luciana Fernandes 10.5 in goal played great and saved nearly every shot, however unfortunately the opposition managed to get one past. This didn't break the girls’ spirits though. The second half kept the same energy with another 4 goals. They finished the game with a final score of 8-1. Well done girls!
Thursday 9th February 2023
On Thursday 9th Feb, Little Ilford girls earnt another astonishing victory over Langdon Academy in football, winning 7-1.
The girls kept their winning streak after beating Royal Docks 8-1 the previous week, with Chandra Bangura 10.2 scoring an unbelievable 5 goals, one own goal from the opposing team and the final goal from Riyah Hussain 10.5, which blew everyone away. Luciana Fernandes 10.5 also did a great job in saving goals for the team, almost keeping a clean sheet. Of course, the rest of the team played well too as the score at half time was 1-1, and came to a miraculous 7-1 by the end, making our school proud yet again.

Little Ilford Victorious!—East London Rugby Club
The East London Rugby Club hosted the 2nd KS3 Rugby Festival of the year and the LIS Rugby Team were more than ready for action.
Despite losing their opening game to Kingsford, Little Ilford went on to beat Rokeby School in a close game by two tries to one and qualify for the final.
Ayman Walid proved too quick for the Kingsford defence and broke through their lines on three occasions to put LIS 3-0 up. The team did well to hold off a late push from Kingsford with the game ending 3-2 to LIS.
The East London Rugby Club Chairman made a special mention about the courage shown by the team and in particular Adelino who made the most tackles in the tournament.
