Dear Friends and Colleagues of LDT – It is holiday season once again. This year’s celebrations will be very different from those of 2019 – there is a ‘quiet’ in the air. Many people have had personal losses this year – friends, family and jobs which saddens Glen and I and all those at LDT. As is LDT tradition, one donation per member of staff has been made to Crisis, a national charity. Crisis help provide shelter and comfort over the holiday period to those less fortunate than ourselves. crisis.org.uk

A message to Staff and Students at Learning Development Training Ltd from Professor Charles Egbu, the new Vice Chancellor of Leeds Trinity University.

Dear Friends and Colleagues, The empowerment of communities through improving education and life chances goes to the heart of what we do at Leeds Trinity University. It’s in our DNA. That’s why I am delighted that we work in partnership with LD Training Services Limited (LDT). Together, we offer foundation and degree level work in business with every prospect of extending that into other areas of provision.

LDT has a reputation for working with students, employers, charities and community groups throughout the UK to provide focussed training and education at the centre of some of our least advantaged communities.

Together, we celebrate diversity working with students across the country of all ages, faiths, backgrounds, ethnicities and abilities.

I hope to meet as many of you as possible in safer and securer times. In the meantime, I extend my best wishes to you all and wish you every success in your endeavours.

The Vice-Chancellor Professor Charles Egbu is the Vice-Chancellor of Leeds Trinity University and was appointed on 1 November 2020.

With more than 25 years’ experience in higher education, Professor Egbu was previously Pro Vice-Chancellor for Education and Experience at the University of East London, where he was responsible for student experience, student success, student retention, quality assurance and enhancement, the Centre for Excellence in Learning and Teaching, and the Students’ Union. He is also a member of various external bodies, including the Advance HE Pro Vice-Chancellor Network and QAA Panel of Experts.

Prior to this, Professor Egbu was Dean of the School of Built Environment and Architecture at London South Bank University and Head of the School of Built Environment at the University of Salford, and held academic posts at University College London, Glasgow Caledonian University and Leeds Beckett University (formerly Leeds Metropolitan). His first Degree was in Quantity Surveying. His Doctorate was obtained in the area of Construction Project Management.

Professor Egbu’s research interests focus on project management, construction management and sustainable development; subjects about which he has written 12 books and contributed to more than 350 publications in various international journals and conferences. He has supervised over 25 PhD students and examined over 100 PhD candidates world-wide. In addition, he has acted as an external examiner to many undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in universities all over the world.

I am pleased to welcome you to LD Training, as we are fast approaching 2021!

Throughout my short time at LD Training, as Head of FE Delivery, I have been amazed by the dedication, commitment, and passion shown by the teaching and non-teaching staff and by the determination shown by our students during this difficult time to achieve their qualifications. I am proud to be part of an organisation which not only puts its student at the centre of its service, but also supports individuals from all academic backgrounds through its Further Education and Higher Education provision.

We are working hard to ensure that in 2021, we will continue to have the resources and technology in place to combat any possible challenges posed by Covid-19. As we adapt to the new normal, we will continue to deliver high-quality programmes throughout our expanding provisions.

WORK-LIFE BALANCE The History of Work Life Balance The idea of work-life balance comes from Gen X and the childhood they experienced from their parents, the Baby Boomers. The Baby Boomers generation faced a real strain when it came to earning money and making a decent living. This meant that they weren’t concerned about having a work-life balance, as long as they were bringing money home.

After seeing their parents put work before their family relationships, Gen X put more of an emphasis on work-life balance and spending time with their family. In turn, Gen Y (or Millennials as they’re also known) saw a healthy work-life as a necessity in employment.

Now, we have Gen Z who have grown up using social media which has put a real emphasis on material items. With this constant desire to live up to society’s standards, Gen Z face a lot of emotions as they know having a work-life balance is important, but they find themselves overworking themselves to achieve at a young age.

The society we live in is fuelled by achieving social standards. We’re driven by the idea of having the fanciest house on the street or the latest designer items that we see on our Instagram feed.

This has caused a generation that aims to achieve big things in their career, which is great! However, it has caused many to put this goal over their mental wellbeing and due to that we also have a generation of people who struggle a lot to cope with strong emotions. Therefore, having the right work-life balance is still important.

Why Is Work Life Balance Important?

As we put such a strain on ourselves to achieve such high material goals, we tend to put our health and wellbeing to the side - mentally and physically. This often means that when we’re feeling mentally stressed or overwhelmed and our body is physically tired, we ignore the signs that push us to a state of exhaustion. In turn, this can have huge long-term impacts on our mental health.

How Can You Improve Your Work Life Balance?

Limit your time on social media – Spending time on social media is often considered the ‘life’ part of a work-life balance. However, you’ll sometimes find that you feel more mentally drained after spending on social media as you’re reminded of all the things you don’t have. So, sometimes it can be best to limit the time you spend on social media so that all your time spent on it will be genuinely happy times to see what your close friends and favourite influencers are up to!

Separate your work and personal life – This may be easier said than done but start by keeping your work and personal space separate. If you’re working from home, try studying or working in the dining room so that when you’re in your bedroom or living space you’re not reminded of work. This segmentation is very important.

Make plenty of me time – Having genuine time to yourself is so important for your mental health. It gives you mind and body time to recharge.

Top Tips for

Studying at home Home Study tips have always been useful, whether it’s for writing an assignment or revising for an exam. However, these tips are more relevant now more than over, with all our students and learners are working and learning from home. So, use these tips to get yourself in the right mindset for a day of study!

1. Create an ideal studying environment In order to have an effective study session you need to ensure you’re in the right space. Your study area needs to be quiet, comfortable, and free from distractions – such as TV’s and games consoles. Depending on your area, you can also try different study areas like a local library or quiet coffee shop.

2. Organise your time Being at home can cause your mind to not be fully immersed into your study and time can escape you. Using a diary or a planner to keep track of online lessons, assignment deadlines, and study sessions is going to make you much more likely to work productively. Remember to also filter in your personal commitments and leisure activities so that you have the right balance of your time!

3. Communicate effectively with your peers and your lecturers The trouble with studying from home is that it can feel quite lonely, but don’t let that stop you from contacting your peers and lecturers.

4. Utilise popular and effective revision techniques If you’re getting bored when studying from home, try mixing it up a bit with different revision techniques. Here’s a list of some you could try out:

5. Utilise free revision tools There are lots of free online tools that can be useful in your revision. These include:

• Quizlet – for flashcard based revision • Grammarly – for perfect Grammar • Sound Note – to turn your voice recording into notes • Evernote – for notetaking

6. Take breaks Finally, it’s so important that you take regular breaks! It can be very difficult to space out your time effectively when your workspace mixes in with your private space. However, it is so important that you distinguish that line. For example, are you studying throughout the day and relaxing in the evening or vice versa? Even if that’s the case, make sure you get a lunch break and regular social catch ups throughout the day too!

Student reps Valentin Moruz Dudley Campus BA (Hons) in Business Management with Foundation Year in Business After 3 attempts, years ago, on following the course of a university, that didn't materialized due to personal situations, I believed that at 32 years of age it could probably be the last opportunity. Also having the possibility of getting a student loan to cover the cost of my course has helped me to fulfil a dream.

The main reason I choose to study with LDT is the fact that they have a campus in Dudley which is minutes away from where I live. That combined with a very positive feedback about their professionalism which I've received from a few friends that were studying with them made my decision a very easy one.

Although I have just finished the foundation year and there is a lot of work to do in the future the amount of information provided is very helpful in my day to day job, everything that we have learned having a real life application.

The opportunity of following the course provided by Leeds Trinity University already helped me to understand better how a leadership/management style job should be approached and what skills and knowledge you require in order to fulfil that position. Also I hope that once I graduate opportunities for better jobs and career paths will arise for me.

apprenticeship Benefits Being able to study whilst you work has so many benefits.

Not only are you removing the typical ‘lack of experience’ hurdle that most young people fail to get past when applying for future jobs, but you are also gaining a crucial qualification that’s highly respected by employers. A few of the wonderful benefits of apprenticeships are: 1. They help you gain skills and knowledge needed to succeed in your chosen industry Whether you are looking to begin your career or switch your career path, apprenticeships are an amazing way to gain knowledge on both a practical and academic level. We understand that the current Coronavirus pandemic can have a damaging effect on everyone’s mental health. We want to make sure all our students and faculty have a safe and reliable number to call if they need to talk to someone.

We have produced a list to help you cope with the current conditions:

Keep to a schedule Try waking up and going to bed at the same time and stick to a routine. Even though we are in lockdown it can help keep sense of a working day and keep you busy. Late nights and late mornings have shown to increase fatigue, which can demoralise and demotivate us – try to keep to an early wake up time to help you fall asleep earlier.

Exercise!

The benefits to exercise are so crucial to keeping yourself motivated and positive.

Whether it’s a morning workout or just a daily walk, the euphoric feeling of completed exercise will help motivate you to complete your daily work and keep you feeling good.

Don’t spend all your time in one room If you can, try not to do everything in your bedroom. If you have the space, try to do your work in the living room/study/dining room/kitchen. During your time in lockdown, you may find it difficult sleeping when spending all of your time in your bedroom and it may contribute to a feeling of Cabin Fever.

Keep in contact with others Just because you can’t see your friends and family in person doesn’t mean you can’t do it virtually, or message them! Use this time to reconnect with people you haven’t seen in a while and catch up. Call them over zoom or just message them to see how they are doing. Don’t let yourself completely lose the social interactions we all desire to have as human beings.

He was a valued member of our Nottingham foundation year programme. Constantin leaves his wife, Elena and two sons who are uppermost in our thoughts and prayers at this very difficult time.
