Quality of Education Reviews Session 17th October (For Headteachers and Curriculum Leads) A reminder that we have a Quality of Education Reviews session for Headteachers and Curriculum Leads on the morning of the residential on 17th October at Wrightington, starting at 11am and ending by 1.00pm. Pearson's free international writing competition is encouraging 4-16 year-olds (taking in Key Stage 5 up to 19 years of age) to tear up the rule book and give their own 21st Century take on classic fairy tales, fables and regional folk stories.

This free competition empowers children and young people to put themselves at the heart of their own stories as they assert their modern-day stamp on classic tales and create their own stories to reflect their personal interests, background and experiences.

As well as accepting entries into the national competition, Pearson will also be separately judging and providing prizes (1 per key stage) for the Archdiocese of Liverpool Schools across Primary and Secondary.

Careers Meeting 15th October: Booking Reminder!

A Careers meeting will take place 8.15am until 10.15am at The Chapel, Hope Academy, Ashton Rd, Newton-leWillows WA12 0AQ on Tuesday 15th October.

This purpose of this meeting is to look at different methods of delivery for Careers Education and Guidance, to share good practice and to explore the possibility of collaborative working in this area.

Quality of Education Reviews: Meeting on 4th December for Maths HoD and Line Managers On 4th December we will run a Quality of Education Reviews session for Maths Leads and Maths Line Managers. NW Maths Hub Programme 2019/20 - Venue information now available Please find details below of the NW Maths Hub Programme for 2019/20 for Trust schools. It is suggested that schools send two members of department, ideally one of whom is experienced and has some leadership responsibility within the department.

Full details of each session are attached.

All Sessions start at 1.30pm and will end by 4.00pm Mathematical Thinking for GCSE This programme is for teachers or departments keen to address the reasoning and problem-solving challenges of the mathematics curriculum and its assessment at GCSE. Work groups will explore professional development activities focusing on practical and accessible classroom-based approaches.

Challenging Topics for GCSE

Winter 2015 Within the ‘old’ GCSE there wereNewsletter—Edition a number of topics that1 consistently proved challenging for many teachers and their pupils for a variety of reasons, either that the content itself was perceived to have an inherently high level of challenge or that it was less difficult material but somehow proved difficult to teach in a way that made sense to pupils, resulting, at best, in an instrumental understanding.

With the new GCSE the list of challenging topics has actually changed little from previous years, and an evidence-based list of challenging topics arising in the new GCSE was drawn up with awarding bodies.

Nationally, Work Groups are set up to explore effective ways of teaching some of these topics, both to address the immediate needs of the incoming KS4 pupils, but also taking a longer term view by considering development in KS3.

GCSE Resits There are now a large and growing number of Post-16 GCSE Resit students, predominantly in FE colleges.

GCSE Mathematics is still unfamiliar to many teachers in FE Colleges and Sixth Form Colleges and with a timeframe for resit delivery over 8 months rather than two (or more) years, centres are faced with a number of substantial difficulties.

EARLY TEACHERS CAREERS PROGRAMME 2019/20 (All Clusters) The Early Teachers Careers Programme replaces the RQT programme and is open to all schools.

Each session will run from 2 – 5pm.

Gap tasks will be given at the end of each session with time allocated in the following session for feedback/ discussion around best practice.

Sessions will include reference to research and reading material will be recommended to further development in pedagogy and practice.
