What is it? This is a course designed to help develop your confidence with number skills in work and everyday life. If your Maths skills need sharpening or you want to gain confidence in working with units of length, weight, capacity, time etc., this is the course for you. You will also gain skills with fractions, decimals, percentages and many other everyday mathematical problems. You will achieve a recognised qualification and the confidence to move on to other courses, such as GCSE Mathematics. Plus, you will also meet new people in a friendly learning environment, share experiences and gain additional skills. The course is for anyone wanting to update their skills or learn new skills, be more confident applying for employment or helping children with their homework or in preparation for GCSE. No previous learning is required.

What previous skills, qualifications and knowledge will I need? No previous skills, qualifications or knowledge is required for this course, just a willingness to learn. The level 2 course is for the more able student, again you will be assessed to ensure you are on the correct level.

How can I be sure I’m on the right course? The first session of every course will include some exercises and activities designed to make sure the course is right for you.

The workload you can expect Improvers is an enjoyable course with no pressure, but you will be expected to do some work at home to follow on from lessons.

What materials will I need? You will need basic stationary and a simple calculator. A textbook is available to purchase from local bookstores for students working at the higher levels.

What is the method of assessment? You will be working towards the new Numeracy Functional Skills qualifications.

☺ Entry Levels ☺ Level One ☺ Level Two What could this course lead on to? Students may be able to progress through more than one level whilst on this course. A Level 2 qualification is considered by some organisations to be equivalent to GCSE.

Meet the tutors Jayne Johns: Jayne Johns teaches Literacy and Numeracy to students at the College in the evenings and also at a variety off community venues during the day. Jayne believes that learning should be fun, so don’t be surprised to hear laughter coming from the classroom or see students measuring the corridor with body parts!

Collette Stinchcomb: Collette teaches mathematics in the College both during the day and in evening classes. Collette believes that all students have the ability to achieve in mathematics and aims to raise students’ self confidence in their own mathematical skills to help them achieve their goal. Collette is a football fan and claims to know the offside rule.

Liam Kirwan: Liam teaches Literacy and Numeracy to adults at various community venues. A published writer and literacy specialist, Liam is a firm believer in lifelong learning and the opportunities and rewards such personal development can bring. When he’s not teaching or acting as an unpaid taxi service for his children, Liam can often be found cycling the lanes of West Lancashire in a desperate attempt to fight off the physical effects of middle age. It is a battle he is losing
