Parks Full name: Rosa Louise McCauley Parks Born: 4 February 1913 Hometown: Tuskegee, Alabama, USA Occupation: Civil rights activist Died: 24 October 2005 Best known for: The Montgomery Bus Boycott, recognised all over the world as a symbol of freedom and equality.

Role model because: She was a fighting force behind showing people of color and women that they should stand up for what they believed in and that people deserved to be treated fairly no matter the color of there skin, where they lived or what they did for a living.

Williams Full name: Serena Jameka Williams Born: 26 September 1981 Hometown: Florida, USA Occupation: Tennis Player Best known for: A world number 1 tennis player and female activist

Subject links: PE, Health and Social Care, PSHCE and politics Role model because: she is hailed by many coaches, players and sportscasters to be one of the best female tennis players of the Open Era. As well as beginning an amazing tennis player, she has also fought for equal play for women and has shown how you can be a wife, mother and still be at the top of competitive sport.

Rowling Full name: Joanne Rowling Born: 31 July 1965 Hometown: Gloucestershire England Occupation: Author Best known for: Writing the Harry Potter Books Subject links: English, PSHCE, Maths Role model because: Rowling has lived a rags to riches life in which she progressed from living on benefits to being the world's first billionaire author. She lost her billionaire status after giving away much of her earnings to charity and even setting up her own charity to help others. She is the UK's best-selling living author.

Curie Full name: Marie Skłodowska Curie Born: 7 November 1867 Hometown: Warsaw Poland Occupation: Scientist Best known for: Research on Radioactivity, first women to win a Nobel prize.

Subject links: Chemistry, Physics Role model because: She was the first women to win a Nobel Prize, is the only woman to win the Nobel prize twice and is the only person to win the Nobel Prize in two different scientific fields. She was also the first woman to become a professor at the University of Paris. The physical and societal aspects of the Curies' work contributed to shaping the world of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.

Yousafzai Full name: Malala Yousafzai Born: 12 July 1997 Hometown: Mingora, Pakistan Occupation: Female Activist Best known for: Fighting for education for girls in her hometown.

Subject links: Citizenship, PSHE, Geography, Law, Politics Role model because: after being shot by men trying to stop her from getting an education, she continued to stand up for what she believed in and fight for her rights. She won a Nobel Peace Prize whilst studying and completing her education in Birmingham.
