The Green Pathway Curriculum

THE BEST OUTCOMES FOR EVERY PUPIL

CURRICULUM OVERVIEW

The curriculum for learners on our Green Pathway is semi-formal and therefore has a high emphasis on individualised learning, coupled with an engaging and stimulating curriculum topic.

The primary focuses of this curriculum are communication, interaction, physical, social and emotional well-being. We also strive to lay the foundations of more academic subjects such as English and Maths.

Our aim is always for pupils to make ongoing progress towards living as independently as possible into adulthood.

WHO IS ON THE GREEN PATHWAY

Students working within this pathway commonly present with the following areas of need    

Communication and interaction Physical and/or Emotional well being Cognition and learning Independence

The pathway for each student is chosen on an individual basis based on the best way to meet needs.

The pathway system is designed to be fluid, meaning that pupils are able to move between pathways throughout their school career.

CURRICULUM AREAS

The curriculum is divided into broad areas, which are developmental in nature.

My Independence Attention and Focus, Life Skills, Personal Care, Travel Skills and Staying Safe My Communication Speaking and Listening, Social Communication, Reading and Writing My thinking Problem Solving, Maths, Science.

My Body and Wellbeing Physical Development, Mental health and wellbeing, Eating and drinking, Physical Health and fitness

My Play Play skills, social skills, art, music and dance.

My World Our environments, Problem solving, Science, personal history.

Learners work within these areas according to their individual interests, needs and abilities. A highly personalised curriculum offer ensures all pupils are challenged appropriately.

TOPIC THEMES

Topic themes run on a 5 year rolling programme. These give learning a clear context and help to maximise pupil engagement.

Some examples of these themes are:  Travel Through Time  Out of this world  Wonderful Water  Animal Kingdom  Green Fingers Learning is based around key engaging texts. Pupils also have Wow experiences for each topic, these include special visitors or trips out.

ASSESSMENT

Pupils progress is measured against a combination of EHCP outcomes and curriculum targets.

EHCP Outcomes are identified in collaboration with parents/carers at annual review. These are the developmental priorities for the pupil.

We also use a bespoke Green Pathway assessment system to track curriculum progress of learners.

Teachers record observations using the App “Evidence for Learning�.

Parents and Carers can access the app at home. They can also comment and upload pictures and videos themselves.

ENRICHMENT AND INTERVENTIONS

Attention Autism This is an intervention model designed by Gina Davies, Specialist Speech and Language Therapist. It aims to develop natural and spontaneous communication through the use of visually based and highly motivating activities.

AAC - Augmentative and alternative communication This includes Makaton, PECS, Communication books, Visual supports, timetables and social stories. We aim to have total communication classrooms where pupils are clearly convey their understanding.

Rebound Therapy An exercise therapy which uses trampolines to provide opportunities for movement, therapeutic exercise and

recreation for people across the whole spectrum of special needs.

Horse Riding Pupils attend horse riding on a referral basis. This helps support both their physical and social development.

Independence (Based on the TEACCH approach) Pupils access this provision to support them become more independent and autonomous learners. There is a strong emphasis on structure and routine supported by visuals.

Touch and Taste Many pupils on the green pathway have challenges around eating and drinking. This intervention is aimed at reducing these anxieties and encouraging a more broad and balanced diet.
