Read Write Inc (RWI) is a phonics based programme which helps children learn to read whilst also developing a wide range of vocabulary and encouraging a love of stories. The alphabet contains 26 letters but spoken English uses about 44 sounds. These sounds are represented by a letter or a group of letters.

What do all these technical words mean? What is a phoneme? A phoneme is the smallest unit of sound within a word. They are taught to students when learning phonics. For example, the word ‘dog’ consists of three phonemes (d-o-g). What is a grapheme? A grapheme is a written symbol that represents a sound (phoneme). This can be a single letter or a sequence of letters such as ‘ai’, ‘sh’, ‘igh’. So when a child says the sound ‘s’ this is a phoneme, but when they write the letter ‘s’ it is a grapheme.
