2023 Music Curriculum Overview

Autumn 1 - Pop

Autumn 2 - Ballads

Year 1 will listen to a range of pop songs. They will talk about how the music makes them feel and begin to move to the beat.

Year 1 will learn to sing simple songs and chants. They will use body percussion to create simple rhythms.

Spring 1 - Rock Year 1 will begin to recognise some instruments and respond to music through movement and dance.

Summer 2 - Films

Year 1 will learn how lyrics convey meaning and sing a range of call and response songs.

Year 1 will use music technology to create sounds. They will think about the mood of the music.

Year 1 will learn how music can tell a story. They will create sound effects for simple stimuli.

Autumn 1 - Pop Year 2 will learn the origin of pop music. They will learn to sing in unison and to group beats.

Autumn 2 - Nativity

Spring 1 - Musical Theatre

Year 2 will learn about the history of the nativity. They will sing songs with control following direction from a leader.

Year 2 will understand how stories are told through musicals. They will create and perform their own rhythm patterns.

Spring 2 - Rock Year 2 will use graphic and dot notation to begin to record their own compositions.

Year 2 will learn about dynamics and tempo. They will use this knowledge when performing a musical piece.

Year 2 will learn about the role of foley artists. They will become foley artists, creating a range of sound effects for a short clip.

Autumn 2 - 60s

Year 3 will learn about how this time period impacted music. They will learn about the stave, lines, spaces and the clef.

Year 3 will identify instruments and the categories they belong to. They will learn about crotchets and quavers when composing music.

Spring 2 - 70s Year 3 will learn about timbre and texture. They will discuss how these impact a piece of music.

Year 3

Summer 1 - 80s Year 3 will use dot notation to show the arrangements of notes.

Spring 1 - 70s Year 3 will structure musical ideas and perform simple melodies following notation.

Summer 2 - 80s Year 3 will use musical vocabulary to discuss pieces of music, commenting on how it makes them feel.

Autumn 1 - Motown Year 4 will learn about minims, crotchets, paired quavers and rests.

They will sing Motown songs within the range of an octave.

Summer 1 - Country/ Americana Year 4 will sing in harmony. They will read and compose simple rhythmic scores.

Spring 1 - Classical Year 4 will discuss instruments they have identi ed in the music and the impact they have. They will identify drone and ostinato.

Summer 2 - Musical Theatre Year 4 will learn about the relationship between lyrics and melody. They will capture and record their own creative ideas.

Autumn 1 - 60s Year 5 will copy back riffs and rhythms. They will compose melodies using pairs of phrases.

Year 5 will learn to link instruments to different genres. They will learn about layers and their combined effect.

Year 5 will compare the work of established composers. They will learn about different time signatures.

Year 5 will compose music to create a speci c mood, atmosphere and environment. They will capture their ideas using technology.

Summer 1 - 00s Year 5 will learn about musical movement during the 00s. They will compose a short ternary pieces.

Dance Club Available to pupils during the autumn term.

Schools Alive Available to year 5 pupils in the autumn and spring term.

Summer 2 - Modern (10s/ 20s) Year 5 will discuss why Some music is successful and suggest improvements to others. They will use chords to create music.

Autumn 1 - Sound Effects Year 6 will evaluate sound effects used within lm and television clips. They will have the opportunity to experiment with different notation styles.

Autumn 2 - Film Scores Year 6 will create music with multiple sections. They will create an 8 or 16 beat melodic phrase.

Spring 1 - Electric Dance Music Year 6 will compare songs in the same genre talking about their similarities and differences. They will use music software to compose a dance piece.

Year 6 will learn how harmonies, drone and riffs are used when singing rock songs. They will use chord changes to accompany songs.

Year 6 will evaluate live performances. They will experiment with creating their own rap performance.

Year 6 will discuss how one piece of music can be interpreted in many different ways. They will consider the impact of the venue and occasion.
