warm welcome
Dear Parent or Guardian,
On behalf of all the staff, children, parents, and trustees I would like to warmly welcome you to Hawes Side Academy.
I have pleasure in providing you with our academy prospectus. You may be considering a new school for your child after moving home or considering your child’s first step into the world of full-time education.
Whichever is the case, you are at a most important and exciting time in your child’s life. This prospectus has been designed to help you appreciate all that Hawes Side Academy has to offer your child and I very much hope you enjoy reading it.
We are a nurturing and inclusive academy committed to ensuring that all pupils matter, and that all pupils succeed. In this way, children lie at the heart of everything we do. We look forward to working with you and your child so that Hawes Side Academy can continue to be the popular and very special place that it is today.
As you will appreciate, there is only so much information that can be gained from reading our prospectus and there is no substitute for visiting the academy. If you would like to see the academy in action, myself or one of our team would be delighted to show you around.
Please contact the academy office to arrange a visit.
Warm regards,
Mrs Boothroyd Principal
Hawes Side Academy is an exciting, happy, and inspiring learning community. It is our aim for our children to become lifelong learners inspired by their learning, and real life application of knowledge and skills.
We have a team of committed and talented staff who provide well-planned and organised lessons, alongside a wide range of curriculum enrichment activities to further enhance children’s learning.
Our aim is to provide the highest quality education for all in a caring, supportive, inclusive, and vibrant learning environment. We are continually developing our ambitious curriculum which is lived out in every aspect of our daily academy life, where teachers and pupils work together to ensure high-quality teaching and learning. We always aim to make learning challenging and thought-provoking in order for everyone to achieve their potential and beyond.
We encourage our pupils to be confident individuals, independent learners, and to develop a lively and enquiring mind. We also want children to develop the ability to question, discuss rationally, and apply themselves to tasks and skills as they strive to reach their full true potential in all aspects of academy life.
can explore, play, and learn.
Every child and every family is different, so we try to cater for all needs. We want to provide parents with all the information they need to make an informed choice about which school is right for their child. We truly believe that the best way to do this is to come in and meet us and see the academy but, we are more than happy to support in other ways if this is not possible.
We provide a deep, meaningful and relevant curriculum which, as a team, we are very proud of. Children have a thirst for learning at Hawes Side Academy and we are committed to nurturing young writers, performers, readers, international speakers, mathematicians, scientists, historians, geographers, artists, designers, musicians, sports persons, and computer users!
We follow a rich, place based curriculum so that children can be completely immersed in their learning.
As our curriculum is rich with learning experiences it enables us to provide many themed days, educational visits and visitors that really bring our subjects to life utilising our local community.
We have a consistent, highly structured and systematic approach for teaching reading, writing, speaking and listening from Foundation Stage to Year 6. It lays strong foundations in both oracy and literacy with Foundation Stage pupils and goes on to provide systematic teaching throughout the primary years.
We follow a maths mastery approach for teaching mathematics. Teaching maths for mastery helps pupils to develop a deep and secure knowledge and understanding of mathematics at each stage of their learning.
We deliver programmes of study that meet the national curriculum requirements issued by the Department for Education. This national curriculum is comprised of three core subjects (English, mathematics, and science) and the following foundation subjects:
History
Geography
Design and Technology
Art & Design
Music
Physical Education (PE)
Computing
Religious Education
Languages
Design & Technology (DT)
Personal, Health and Social Education (PHSE)
Religious Education (RE)

As well as a focus upon our local culture, at Hawes Side Academy we focus on building connections around the globe.
We are particularly proud of our Confucius classroom status, held since 2016, which has become part of our innovative and diverse profile and allows Hawes Side Academy pupils to communicate ideas, facts and feelings in Mandarin and develop an in-depth knowledge of Chinese culture.
We believe it is vitally important for all children to feel successful and to have their achievements recognised and celebrated. We do this in a number of ways, including Values Certificates which are featured in our weekly newsletter. Achievements might be of an academic or a creative nature.
We recognise the children's efforts to embed our school values of relationships, respect, resilience, reflection and responsibility.
We also like to celebrate children’s success with their parents and families. We do this through performance, assemblies, newsletters and celebrations.
We recognise and value the role of parents and carers as partners in their child’s education, and we are continually looking to find ways of extending and developing this partnership.
We endeavour to support parents in a number of ways, including:
Open events are held where parents are invited into the academy to share their child’s learning. In addition, we hold fun activities for our parents and children to take part in together. These events are always a great success and enjoyed by both parent and pupil alike.
Parent-teacher meetings are arranged each term so parents can meet with their child’s teacher and find out about progress, as well as ask questions.
Newsletters are sent home to keep parents informed about what is happening in the academy, as well as providing key diary dates.
Our teachers are available at the beginning and end of the day (or you can make an appointment). You will also see our Principal, members of our Senior Leadership Team and our family support worker on the playground most mornings and afternoons.
Parents, carers, or family members helping in the academy is always most welcome and much appreciated. We have many volunteers who help in classrooms, around the academy and from home.
We are extremely fortunate to have an amazing, friendly community that supports us in running many events and fun days for our academy.
We pride ourselves on being an active community orientated school, this includes having great relationships with our parents as we see this as an important part of children’s education.
We have a range of extracurricular activities. These range from sporting clubs, dance and performance, to creative clubs, such as art, and sewing. We also have learning clubs, such as history club.
At Hawes Side Academy, we have a supportive and hard working group of trustees who are highly skilled in different areas.
Our trustees and staff work well together to provide the very best for our children. In doing this, they offer both challenge and support to the academy leadership team.
The Governing Board at Hawes Side Academy is made up of parents, community members and staff.
We also have close links with local secondary schools and we visit these for secondary experience days, meet and greets, plus many more learning opportunities.
We work with a range of agencies to support pupils with special educational needs in our academy. These may include:
• Educational psychologists.
• Speech and language therapists.
• Occupational therapist.
• SpLD advisory service.
• ASD advisory service (ARC).
• CAMHS.

We believe that no two learners arriving at Hawes Side Academy are the same. Pupils come from different backgrounds, bring different experiences, and have different needs and interests. From the moment your child arrives in our academy they can be sure of a warm welcome and help and guidance from their teacher as they become part of a new family here at Hawes Side Academy.
At the heart of what we do is making sure our new arrivals:
• Are happy, settled, and secure.
• Feel a part of academy life as soon as possible.
• Enjoy their learning.
• Make friends and build relationships
• Know who to go to for those all-important conversations.
• Are ready to achieve outstanding success.
• Are supported if English is not a first language.
We believe our children deserve nothing less and we will do the very best for them.
