Geography at Bridge School

Year 1: Areas of Strength Use simple fieldwork and observational skills to study the geography of their school and its grounds.

Children have been given lots of opportunities to explore the grounds of the school discussing areas they recognise; using geographical language.

Year 2: Areas of Strength Use simple fieldwork and observational skills to study the geography of their school and its grounds.

The children have discussed areas of the school that they are familiar with and used compass directions to complete a game.

Use simple compass directions (north, south, east and west) and locational and directional language [for example, near and far, left and right], to describe the location of features and routes on a map.

Use aerial photographs and plan perspectives to recognise landmarks and basic human and physical features; devise a simple map; and use and construct basic symbols in a key.

Children have discussed and used aerial photographs to understand key features of the local area. As well as transpose that information onto maps of their own design.

Year 3: Areas of Strength Use fieldwork to observe the human and physical features on the local area using a range of methods, including sketch maps, plans.

Excellent evidence of the children exploring their local area. In particular, Year 3 have incorporated English and History into their learning creating a good overall picture of the local community for the children.

Year 4: Areas of Strength

Use fieldwork to observe, measure record and present the human and physical features in the local area using a range of methods, including sketch maps, plans and graphs, and digital technologies.

Year 4 children had the opportunity to track and record a walk around the local area using OS maps. They have been encouraged to discuss and use OS map symbols to recognise key features around Bridge village.

The children have used audio recorders and statistics to record the noise levels around the village as well as car traffic. They have represented their finding using graphs.

Use the 8 points of a compass, 4-figure and grid references, symbols and key (including the use of Ordnance Survey maps) to build their knowledge of the United Kingdom.

Excellent evidence of the children using OS symbols to understand key features of the UK.

Excellent use of geographical vocabulary in books and application of grid references and 8-point compass references.

Year 6: Areas of Strength Use fieldwork to observe, measure record and present the human and physical features in the local area using a range of methods, including sketch maps, plans and graphs, and digital technologies.

Use the 8 points of a compass, 4figure and 6-figure grid references, symbols and key (including the use of Ordnance Survey maps) to build their knowledge of the United Kingdom and the wider world.

Year 6, have built on the knowledge of Year 5 and applied it to areas further afield such as London.
