RE: In RE we will continue to explore the question

“What can be done to reduce racism? Can religion help?”. In this unit children will understand the challenges racism presents and discuss their own and others ideas about reducing racism and prejudice.

English: This half term we will be reading stories from 1001 Arabian Nights including Ali Baba and the 40 Thieves. In our writing, we will focus on writing to entertain by composing first person narrative, character and setting descriptions. In grammar and sentence work we will practise using subordinate clauses, writing dialogue and work on including a wide range of sentence structures within our written work.

Year 6 Summer 1: History Topic

Science: In Science, we will be looking at Living Things and their habitats. We will describe how living things are classified into broad groups according to common observable characteristics, based on similarities and differences, including micro- organisms, plants and animals and give reasons for classifying plants and animals based on specific characteristics.

Reading: We will continue to work on our retrieval skills, understanding vocabulary and phrases, how to infer from the text and how to use evidence to support our answers. We will read a wide range of texts with different themes.

History: Children will be taught about a non-European society that provides contrasts with British history. We have chosen Early Islamic civilization, including a study of Baghdad c. AD 900. Study will include The House of Wisdom, the legacy of Baghdad including inventions and The Silk Road.

PSHE: We will learn about our 'Working World'. We will take a look at why people want to save money, ways in which the children can help out at home, budgeting and ways to make money.

Design and Technology: Textiles

Children will design a waistcoat to tie in with the theme of our performance ‘What a Knight'. They will then mark the outline of the waistcoat on fabric before cutting and pinning the panels. They will then sew them together using a simple running stitch . After assembling their waistcoat, they will then decorate it with a motif.

Year 6 Summer 1: History Topic

Spanish: El fin de semana / The weekend:

Computing: Throughout this term, the children will be learning about the history of computers. They will have the opportunity to create a multi-media presentation all about the topic. They will also learn about being safe online.

• Learn how to say what they do at the weekend in Spanish (free time activities).

• Learn to integrate conjunctions into their work.

Music: The children will learn all about texture, duration and timbre whilst learning the following: drum beats, guitar riffs, bass lines 2, vocal hooks and also dynamic changes and structure. They will be preparing for Year 7 music and something called...'The School of Rock!

PE: In PE we will be continuing to develop our skills in Invasion Games and build upon our skills in striking and fielding activities.
